Went to the register and the man behind the counter yelled at me to put the empty case in the shopping cart because empty cans can be dirty or leaking. I explained that it was my first time going in that liquor store and wasn't aware of the shopping cart. Sorry. Then I purchased a gallon of wine. I paid and requested a bag. He rolled his eyes and huffed that a gallon doesn't need a bag. I explained that I want a bag since I don't need everyone knowing what I'm purchasing. Give me a break. Is a bag really that big of a deal? The only reason why I still go there is the gallon of wine that I like is cheaper than the other liquor stores.

The store itself is clean, well-lit, and spacious. Almost too spacious: they could probably shoehorn 50% more inventory in there if they really tried. The guy who works there in the evenings (the owner, I think) isn't overly friendly. You might get a "Hi." I'm sure he's a jolly chap if you get to know him. But I went to Douglas Liquors on probably 15 occasions and never got a "How you doin' today? Did you find everything you were looking for?" or a "Hey, I notice you get the ____ a lot, but have you tried the ____? I really like it." When the person behind the counter has more charm than a three-bean salad, I'm a little more likely to become a regular. Nothing really wrong with the place, but nothing to keep me coming back again and again. I suggest Gallery of Wines for beer and wine (and charm and service), or Liquor World for the hard stuff.

I had two employees check with me to see if I needed help. One thing that was a bit confusing was that the hard liquor seemed to be crammed onto the shelves in no particular order. The aisles are clearly labeled with what type of alcohol is in them, and they have an especially large wine selection as well, organized by type. They used to have one of my favorite roses here when nowhere else had it - it's since no longer carried here last I checked, which is tragic, but they have a lot of unique and high quality, yet reasonably priced, options that I've been able to switch to. There are even tons of mixers, snacks, and gift basket type paraphernalia available here by the checkouts, so it can be a one stop shop before you head to a party or stock up for a date night. Even their selection of local craft beers is more diverse than most other places I've tried - it's especially great around the holidays if you want to gift some local craft beer. Vast amounts of beer are consumed during summer parties and Brady's is always there with another case or keg of inebriant to hail Bacchus. They seem to have an endless supply in the back cooler. Not a particularly large variety of foreign beers are on hand but Guinness, Fosters, Heineken and the usual common European and Australian beers can be found. One can certainly find significantly larger selection at liquor superstores in Warwick or Attleboro, and if you are looking for exotic wines or champagnes then you probably would be much happier at those places, but Murphy's does have a surprisingly wide selection of certain items packed into a compact space. Murphy's holds its own with sake, mead, and other less in-demand beverages that small stores typically ignore because they are quite a lot smaller and quite a lot more expensive, and Murphy's best competes as an alternative to those. As a practical matter, if I'm buying a bottle of table wine to bring as a dinner guest or something of that sort, I'm more likely to buy it from Murphy's than from anywhere else because of good prices and convenient location.

You can't always judge a book by its cover, after all. But sometimes you really can judge a book by its cover. This place is as ghetto as it looks. While having dinner at Doherty's we did a mental inventory of the beer fridge at home and realized we didn't have enough to make it through a Bruins playoff game. I love a place with a good selection and Yelp says that this place has it. I suppose, if you're comparing Murphy's to your average neighborhood liquor store then their selection is pretty decent. But this is no Chris Gasparo's or Yankee Spirits. If you want selection then you need to go to one of the big guys. The selection here is simply above average. The big issue with this place is that it's dirty. Yes, that's in part due to the trashy folks you get walking in and out. While we were there two girl size 26 girls wearing size 6 spandex waltzed in. At one point they simultaneously bent over causing layers of flab to cascade over their skimpy clothing. It was the stuff that nightmares are made of. But the customers aren't the real issue. People watching in Pawtucket is actually one of my favorite hobbies. The problem is that the place itself is just plain dirty. There's one spot with a crumpled up fleece on the floor that's meant to capture water from the dripping roof. Every cooler was covered in grime. The whole place is just dingy. Not to mention, the layout is clumsy. The beer is in three completely different corners of the store. Look, I get it. I don't like my neighborhood liquor store either and I don't give it a shitty score on Yelp because I still go there on a regular basis. It's in my neighborhood and it's convenient. But let's be honest here, this place is really ghetto. If I lived across the street then I'd get my beer there, but I wouldn't like it. Since I don't live in the area I sure as hell won't be back.
