On 16 November, I headed off into The Jewellery Quarter with a little suitcase containing my red shoes and 1950's style dress to embark upon a bit of a scary adventure. No, I wasn't about to audition for a local production of The Wizard of Oz, I was heading off for my first ever photo shoot!
As I turned 40 the day before, I'd treated myself, earlier in the year, to a Groupon deal for a 'Vintage Photoshoot' at Northwood Studio. I've been camera shy for most of my life, and so it was a big deal, but I thought it would be nice to mark the occasion, and of course, stop my Mother from nagging me for 'an up to date picture'.
The team of 3, Justin, Hannah and James, were all really friendly, and I felt immediately put at ease. Justin showed me in and introduced me to Hannah (his sister), who was to do my hair and make-up. She was friendly, quick and professionally, and within minutes, a super glamorous me was staring back from the mirror. Next, she did my hair with nice simple waves, and then I was ready! She then introduced me to James, the photographer, and I was taken through to the studio.
James was very kind and did his best to put me at ease, obviously used to nervous newbies descending on them! He explained the process, and then left me alone to change. First of all I raided their wardrobe, just to see if there was anything fun I could wear, and there was! The first lot of pictures too just a few minutes, and then I changed into my own dress and those red shoes. Again, just a few more minutes of fun and we were finished.
I changed back into my normal, awaiting the viewing and that was when I started to worry that I may not like any of the pictures, but I didn't realise that James was a Magician at that point!
When I was finally taken through to the viewing area by Justin, I was amazed at the results. The guy is an artist, and a very talented photographer. Eventually I'd managed to find 5 that I really liked (If I'd had the money, I'd have had many more) and then we did a great value deal on those pictures, with Justin taking into account my budget. No hard sell or manipulation, not like the stories I've sometimes heard of these things! What's more, the make-up wasn't so thick that I looked like a prostitute when back out in daylight. On the contrary, I was able to head off to the movies afterwards, just rather more glam than normal!
Overall, I would highly recommend James, Hannah & Justin at Northwood Studio. They offer a friendly and professional service, and great value for money! read more
