NorthStar Movers are magicians! I still can't figure out how they did it. I live in a 300-unit 17 story high rise that is being renovated. While my apartment is under renovation I was being moved to another vacant apartment in the building. Eight of us on my floor were being moved at the same time by eight different crews. NorthStar was doing all the packing also. You would think with all that traffic, something would end up in the wrong apartment. Instead the opposite happened. How did the movers know how to put all my things in the temp apartment exactly where they had been in my original apartment? Furniture, dishes, pots/pans, flatware, bathroom toiletries, valuable paintings carefully bubble-wrapped, 4 closets of clothes? How is that even possible? Nothing was labeled. They did it so fast by memory, that by the time I got from my apartment to the other, it was finished and I didn't even get to see how they did it. Everyone on the crew spoke English, but I didn't even need to give them directions. There's only one explanation: NorthStar Movers are magicians! read more

Do not use this company. I had this company pack, store and move in my items from DTLA. Unique,! irreplaceable , and expensive items were stolen from my storage and they gave me the complete runaround when trying to initiate a claim. (with all the correct paper work). For example I stayed on the phone over an hour they asked me several times did I have my inventory list which I did and then they told me they would call my back in 3-5 business days to nothing. We hired NorthStar to help our family move from L.A. to Ithaca, NY. We knew this was a complicated, long-distance move, and we decided to move forward with NorthStar because they were highly recommended. Although pricer than other companies, the reviews were strong, and our family wanted to hire a high quality service that would help us achieve as seamless a move as possible. We were incredibly disappointed. The movers did not pack anything in any sort of organized manner. Our clothes were pinned down and damaged by small pieces of furniture crammed into wardrobe boxes on top of the fabric. Multiple pieces of furniture were chipped or otherwise damaged. Dishes were broken. A random box of baking soda we had in our kitchen was thrown into a box, and every item in that box was covered with baking soda as a result. And the worst part is that *none of the boxes were labeled* so we couldn't find anything we needed and had to move heavy boxes all over the house to where they belonged. We did not get what we paid for, and the claims department has been no help. read more

I've used NorthStar Moving for 3 moves now. All of them were between SoCal and Norcal, and I've been very happy each time. My most recent move, in particular, was excellent thanks largely in part to Kevin R who was the primary person who helped with packing and moving out of my old house as well as unpacking and dropping off. Kevin is super friendly, helpful, and professional. His communication throughout the process and move was excellent, and I always felt taken care of. The rest of the NorthStar Moving team was great as well. I needed to move with very short notice (less than a week), and NorthStar gladly accommodated. I was able to schedule a virtual walkthrough (via FaceTime) of my house to obtain an estimate and have movers at my house the very next day. The estimate was accurate; there were no surprise charges later on. I spent around $7400 on my move, which included some assistance with packing certain items (2 TVs, 2 mattresses, 2 desks, rowing machine, lamps, & miscellaneous smaller items), but I boxed up most of the stuff myself. I had a 4 bed house (which was not completely full of stuff, so the price will certainly vary based on your walkthrough). To be honest, I didn't spend a lot of time shopping around, but I had used NorthStar in the past and had good experiences. Of my 3 moves, I only had some minor damage to a cheap Ikea dresser made of particle board, so no big deal there. NorthStar does include some very minimal basic insurance for damages of 60 cents per pound on your stuff (at no additional cost), but there is an option to pay for additional coverage. I opted for additional coverage on some of my more valuable items (sofa, desks, TV, rowing machine). This insurance costs 3.5%-4.25% of the declared value plus a deductible of $100-$1000 (depending on which percent you opt to pay) with an optional $50 per item for interior damage of electronics. I believe there's a more comprehensive (and pricier) insurance option as well. In the end, the insurance was just for peace of mind because my items arrived undamaged. I'd definitely recommend NorthStar and would certainly use them again if I happen to be doing another longer distance move. A real, live person actually picks up the phone when you call them, and I didn't have to wait a long time either. All the folks I spoke to (Gil, the estimator person... Kristi, the lady who helped with insurance... and the initial person on the phone whose name I didn't catch) were very friendly and professional. And, they were all very patient with my dumb questions. I can't really compare NorthStar to other movers since I've been loyal to them, but they haven't let me down in 3 moves, so I'll be sticking with them. read more

I recently used NorthStar for my relocation and was very dissatisfied overall. **Sales and Move Out** While the sales team was helpful and the crew efficiently loaded my belongings, this was the only positive part of my experience. **Operations** My items were moved from California to Texas without notification, preventing me from accessing crucial contents for an emergency legal matter. *****More Information: My furniture was stored for three months and I paid storage fees - it was moved to Austin Texas without me being notified - the way I found out was I received a invoice for the storage fee from Austin and also I requested access to my safe which had my legal documents in it - I basically found this out on my own and was not informed of the move. **Claims** My move-out was in March 2024, and claims started in June 2024 and continued through January 2025. On the move in date (June 1st) I found 14+ items damaged, including a large 1900s mahogany table with a fractured leg and all legs and the skirt broken, a Peloton with a bent wheel, a canopy bed, and a leather chair affected by climate issues. (see attached Pics) The claims department is outsourced, and I attempted to escalate my concerns with Northstar to no success. I was asked to sign a form to waive my rights to post about my experience in order to receive a courtesy amount of $500. I refused to sign it. The claims process has been confrontational, and my concerns remain unresolved. *** More Information - Here the exact wording in the release form to receive the courtesy amount - basically giving up my rights to post (social or internet) regarding the move - "I further agree not to file or continue any previously filed, and to withdraw any claims, complaints, or any action including any State, City, Federal, Government, Insurance, Subrogation, Consumer, Public, Media, Social, Internet, Arbitration, or Credit Card Agencies relative to my move." NorthStar was the most expensive moving company we got quotes from, but we decided to use them anyway. There was some comfort knowing that the flat rate that we were quoted, after consultation, would be the final cost - no worries about movers adding on last minute fees or them taking their time so that they can charge more. Jorge and his crew were very efficient. They wrapped up our cheap furniture like they were priceless antiques. They hustled like no movers I've ever seen. I liked that NorthStar is very professional. Super legit. 10/10 would use again. I have a lot of things going on right now (we all do), but NorthStar truly made the logistics of setting up the move and the actual execution so clear and easy. Logistics: I appreciated how transparent they were about pricing. They sent clear follow up emails about their rate, as well as insurance options. Sometimes phone calls can be annoying, but I super appreciated them following up on booking a time, and reviewing details the day before to ensure we were on the same page. The day of: the guys were really friendly and speedy. Francisco was in charge and he had Israel and another great gentleman assisting -- all three were super friendly and accommodating-- and FAST. And nothing broke! Pricing: I moved from a studio in Inglewood to the west side and it was thankfully well under the 3 hour minimum, especially with 3 guys. Make sure to check if they're offering a Yelp deal. Parking: for those who have street parking, I just so happened to book my appointment close to street sweeping timing. NorthStar picked up and delivered my items when I moved to another state. The process was relatively smooth. I was pretty happy with the service. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that when they came to pick up my items, there was a weird mix up on what they were taking even though I was quoted on everything in my storage unit. They labeled and took everything in the end and didn't give me any trouble about it, so I would definitely recommend them. They worked on the price with me and came in a timely manner. Good lord, were it possible for me to give zero stars I would. Were it possible for me to give -5 stars, I would. Were it possible for me to travel through time and warn my past self to never dare to contact this company, I would. I have never paid somebody 7,000 dollars to make my life worse. Allow me to count the ways. They scheduled our move for the wrong day. Yes, the wrong day. Two days early. As in: they just showed up at my house and started packing up beds without even informing me that this was our pickup day. This was supposed to be the day of our final estimate, but instead they strong-armed me into paying AFTER they had already TAKEN our possessions under threat of 'if they don't take it now you're not moving.' And, mind you, they did not even take 2/3s of what they were supposed to! I was left paying them 7,000 dollars to move a couch, 3 desks, and a couple of mattresses - as they did not even follow through with fulfilling what was ON THE ESTIMATE. When I contacted them about this, they proceeded to treat me like an idiot, as though I would have scheduled MY MOVE for the wrong day. I remained calm on the phone while the estimator yelled at me like I was his deadbeat son. This was, of course, until I brought up to the insipid jerk on the phone that the entire truck was loaded and I had not yet paid them a single red cent. He changed his tune, and I genuinely felt bad that the guys doing the heavy lifting having their reputation impacted by working with someone like that. The movers themselves were very professional, but every single person I spoke to on the phone regarding estimates and scheduling was at best incompetent and at worst a brazen liar. Then, once we received our possessions at our new home - they proceeded to NOT ASSEMBLE that which they assured us they would. I genuinely would have rather done it all myself! They: Scheduled us for the wrong day Refused to take any form of responsibility for their error Were incredibly disrespectful Failed to fulfill the order as per the estimate Vastly overcharged me Repeatedly harassed us for our final payment quite literally moments after the truck had left and we were left scrambling to rent u-hauls Lied to me about reassembly I have hired movers before. Our firm has worked with NorthStar Moving and Ram Katalan since 2006 on (so far) four moves. We expect to have three more moves to various warehouses over the next month or so. I believe our first move went from a 30,000 sq. ft. building to 50,000; and it involved furniture, pallets, shelving, etc. for ~ 50 employees and from a two-story building with no elevator. Our second and third moves involved over 20 people and ~12,000 sq. ft. of warehouse inventory from a few different locations. Today I worked with Ron Cohen and Pedro in a move comprising ~ 20 people and their furniture, shelving, pallets galore, etc. from one of our buildings to another. Although we scoped the job months ago, NorthStar somehow came together on one week's notice and did this move for us without a hitch -- on time, on budget, no issues whatsoever, and everyone was lovely to work with. We have ALWAYS had a wonderful experience with NorthStar, and I call them whenever we have requirements. When you have a good experience over and over, you certainly don't want to make changes. I also love that they're a local firm to our business in Chatsworth, are a good neighbor and steward in the community, and they try their best to please. read more

I'll just list the facts and you guys can make your own judgement. I wanted to move from Bay Area to New York. They gave me an estimate of $6k to move one bedroom apartment. I decided to dump most of my baby furniture and got it down to around $5k for the move (packing and unpacking). Most of the time when I try to email them I get no response unless I call them. They told me the move will take 5 to 30 days. It took exactly 30 days for my stuff to get to New York. That's a lot of time without my furniture. I told them many times to call me 3 days in advanced at least, so I can reserve the elevator on my building, they never did, they just call me the day of the move in. So that caused a whole other issue. Then when they unpacked my stuff (only the large furniture) they also left marks on my hallway. I had my military move conducted by this company and We had multiple Items damaged. Which they denied to replace or pay the cost of replacing. They did an inventory with pre existing damages the had for example " scratch on table top" where there are none and then proceeded to scratch the leg and side of a vintage table and then denied the claim! there was no system when it came to receiving the move at the final location. we had to open the box and unpack and clean up all the trash. I had a move from Altadena to Alhambra and it went smoothly. Eliezar Z. and Milton were both great at moving all of our stuff! Me and my girlfriend had already moved our valuables and fragile things separately, and put everything else in boxes. Eliezar and Milton were experts at knowing how to break down the bed and mattress and keep them safe and clean. They also handled the couch very well! Especially considering how we lived on the second floor and only had stairs, no elevator. We were very grateful with their help, and they even offered to move one of our bigger potted plants with no issue. We were worried the plant would be damaged in the back, but they assured us they knew how to properly secure it and told us that all of the items in the back were strapped down securely. Sure enough it arrived safe and sound! They charge a minimum of 4 hours (3hrs minimum plus double time on the drive) and overall came to about the same price as other competitors, but I genuinely appreciated their customer service! After NorthStar discovered they DID indeed move me, and that this IS apparently how they would do things, the COO, Wendy, reached out. She did apologize for the Business Manager, Lauren's conduct here on Yelp. She wanted to know why I didn't reach out immediately. I hadn't been on Yelp in several weeks and hadn't seen the responses, and frankly it's not my job to follow up on a bad experience. I posted an honest review. As far as I was concerned, they had my contact info from moving me and could have reached out directly, and hadn't. The conversation was a bit too "why didn't you call the office about the truck/movers?" (what good would that do, if they were the ones that sent them) and "If you'd worked with us before you'd know we care." I HAD chosen them based on the recommendation of a friend, and all they would have had to do was deliver an adequate level of service and customer care to get a positive review. But bad went to worse here on Yelp, and now they were in full damage control mode. Ultimately they refunded half our cost. I raised my rating half in return. Will I recommend them? No. Will I warn others away? Believe it or not, no. It seems overall they do a better job than they did for me, and I honestly do believe that there will be some changes made after this exchange. It was unfortunate that I had such a bad experience, but the response from the Business Manager did equal if not more damage to my opinion of the company. I appreciate that Wendy reached out, and I appreciate the partial refund. I sincerely hope that this will be a building block for the company to improve for future clients. Previous update: The fact that this company retaliated to a negative review by gaslighting and bullying has damaged its reputation further. One star is one too many. We are almost finished unpacking from our local LA move, which was made SO much easier by Cesar, Luis, William, Milton, and Darwin. A friend recommended this company and they were amazing. We watched them haul heavy furniture and boxes in our first location and we were equally amazed when they unloaded without seeming tired at all in the next house. They were very fast, but not careless at all. Our new house was painted white and I was so afraid the walls would be beat up, but not a scratch! We've had bad experiences in the past and we will always use this company! Moving is not cheap, but we could not have done this move so efficiently without them!!! PS--when I got on to write this review, I noticed someone said they were offered $ for a good review. We were not offered anything at all for a review!! Just moved from Los Angeles to Philadelphia area. The crew that packed and loaded our stuff in Los Angeles was great. On time, considerate, and careful with everything. I have no desire to disparage that team at all. Delivery is a different story. On Wednesday (12 days after pickup) I received a call saying "your things are in a warehouse in California and we'll call you when it leaves the state". Not ideal, but within the contract, so that was fine. Then I got a text on Friday saying "your stuff is arriving tomorrow between 2 and 5 PM". Made me wonder how accurate that Wednesday phone call was, and why they made it in the first place, since 72 hrs from Los Angeles to Philadephia doesn't seem likely. Saturday "delivery day" around 1 we get a call asking for payment. Fine. We pay over phone by credit card. Saturday at 5 I get a text from driver saying "actually, it'll arrive tomorrow at 9 AM" Then I get a call back from the main office saying "we're waiting for contact from driver". Today is Saturday. We'll see what happens tomorrow.... Smooth and careful delivery "on time" at 9AM might earn them 3 stars again, but this is very frustrating. If they had never promised "Saturday between 2 and 5" I wouldn't be as frustrated. However, an entire weekend afternoon (and now a weekend morning) have had to be rescheduled for a family of 4 due to this delay. Some compensatory refund would also go a long way to remedying this complaint, as a $6000+ cost shouldn't lead to such frustration. Edit: After some cooling off time and being reached out to, I have adjusted my review. Still leaving what I originally put above, but will add that I was contacted by some of Northstar's management who did seem genuinely apologetic/empathetic and tried their best to reach out and remedy my complaints. In the end, our things did get delivered where they were sent to, and everything seems to have been handled with care (haven't opened all boxes yet). We were partially refunded a bit, and that was purely at the company's discretion, as they weren't required to do anything. That is greatly appreciated. My biggest remaining complaint is about the initial miscommunication of hearing that our things were still all the way across the continent (leaving me to believe we'd have much more time to prepare to delivery) followed by the "it'll be there tomorrow". Not sure what sort of error led to the first unnecessary & inaccurate call. All in all, they adequately performed the job we paid them for, and honestly owned up to their errors and made it right. Not planning to move again anytime soon, but I wouldn't rule out using them again. read more

Horrific experience. Paid a lot of money to have them pack and move my deceased fathers sport card collection cross country. I paid for a full pack and items are loose in boxes, packing paper wasn't used. Of the 60 plus boxes they packed, almost all are dented, crushed, etc. this all could have been avoided by using packing paper like every moving company knows to do. Team was two hours late and apparently because it was a Saturday were more worried about getting out of there Vs doing the right thing and packing as paid to do. Worst possible experience which made this move beyond disappointing, upsetting, disheartening which was a waste of money spent. It was an out of state move and still in the state of shock. I realize sometimes something can be damaged but when it totals more than 15 items all of which the company packed that was damaged, boxes missing (which they say all the right things like, "we have started an internal investigation." ) but made sure to collect their money while leaving us devastated. (Paid approximately $10,000 for the move and an additional $3,000 for insurance on high priced items.) We asked them prior to the move if they're equipped to handle high end furniture since it was very important to us. They assured us they can handle it and why we moved forward with this company. We're a middle class family and not able to simply run out and purchase new furniture at the caliber we originally purchased the furniture. What is interesting is I was meticulous to pack all items in the home except the furniture ( NorthStar wrapped the furniture). All the boxes were ready the day of pick up properly labeled, taped with "fragile" labels (placed on the top and all sides to make it easier for them) and large green stickers to easily identify our boxes. The boxes marked fragile were crushed as were many boxes but I still did not have anything damaged the way I packed my boxes. And yet the "professionals" did not reciprocate the same quality and damaged more than 15 items which were mostly the high priced items. Now dealing with the insurance people (which NorthStar directed us to) is making it so difficult with little to no communication. I cannot express how frustrating and upsetting this has been for us both. We were the last customer on the truck and can see why things got damaged due to overpacking the truck. There was a few items I never thought to insure which was three boxes of shoes. I thought to myself, "how could they damage shoes since each pair was in their original boxes placed into large taped boxes???" I never thought they would lose those boxes and no clue where they might be! Unfortunately, those boxes held designer shoes I have collected over the past 4-5 which makes it impossible to replace due to the high price of each box of shoes. I would not recommend them at all and I would recommend finding another moving company to avoid this frustrating and insane situation. read more

Northstar moved my 1br +plus a large storage unit into a 3 bedroom house. There 3 movers and they began around 10am. The whole thing took many hours and the total came to about $1,300, which I think was a fair price. Let me explain. They moved quickly. Other than a meal break they didn't rest until the job was done and I feel they were efficient. It just takes a while to disassemble, wrap furniture, load, drive, unwrap, assemble, and put in the house exactly where we want it to go, which means trial and error. Also, my house has stupidly narrow hallways and doorframes, so it took a long time to maneuver the fridge and large pieces, but I liked that. I would rather it take 10 minutes just to fit the fridge through the door than them just banging it through and hurting the wood frame. Oh and they held the furniture on it's side for us so we could attach sliders under ALL the furniture. So we made the service longer. The point is it cost a lot of money, but based on my short conversations with other companies, Northstar's pricing and terms were fair and we would hire them again. read more

Thank you NorthStar! Manny and his crew were fantastic, they HUSTLED, and made our move so easy! We had a very complicated move, going to 3 (!) destinations, our house was a complete disaster and only halfway packed on moving day, everyone was panicking, the forces of chaos were abound, and it was POURING RAIN the entire time... but the crew patiently listened to what we needed, arranged all of their gear and work area, then jumped to work. We had to sort all of the items by destination, and the crew got it 100% correct, so when we got to each place, the unload was super fast, and we didn't have to re-organize anything! I'd find it hard to believe that any other team of movers could do the job faster than they did. The 3 person crew was in perpetual motion, working as a team to simultaneously (un)pack/wrap and lift as necessary, which saved a lot of time compared to having 2 people. Because our last destination, a storage place, closed early that day, we were on a tight schedule, and they got us all the way through, with time to spare. I felt the hourly rate was fair, it included all the fees, and the material costs were reasonable. Valery was very helpful setting it all up, she was responsive and made sure we had the right information and timing. She even took the time to follow up and repeat all the details for me the day before the move, just in case I had questions or any issues, which I really appreciated. read more

Our experience with Northstar was amazing ! The entire company was communicative and responsive from the get go. Johan G, Noel S and Enrique P were courteous and extremely efficient . They called 30 mins before arrival, did a walk through at the starting location and immediately got to work . They were careful with our fragile belongings and made sure to cover everything that went in the truck. When they arrived at the drop off location, they did another walk thru of the space . They ensured each box and each piece of furniture went where it was supposed to go. These guys made what is normally a very stressful day that much easier!
