Tried one of their house sandwiches, the big hillbilly, it was very good. Pulled pork was well smoked and they held back on the sauce, per my request. They seem to have a nice commercial smoker that does the job. Cole slaw was a bit around the bend, maybe 1-2 days old. Did not consume. Wife had an issue with slaw at another area restaurant (shigella) a few years back and we just don't risk it. Facility and tables were clean and staff was friendly. Would try again. read more

As a transplant from down south, I'm always on the lookout for great barbecue. This place is a must stop if you're in the area and probably even worth a drive if you've got a craving for some great barbecue. The pulled pork didn't disappoint. They even have a vinegar-based pepper BBQ sauce - a true southern staple! The staff was super friendly and made us out-of-towners feel welcome. Friday nights North Side offers Rib Tips so you can count on us getting our orders in to-go. Love their sweet BBQ drenched over the Fries and hot BBQ on the side - really good Slaw too. Only thing missing from my prior Lake County Rib Tip memories is wish North Side would offer Mixed Greens as a Friday Special treat too! Would order extra quarts to take home. So right with Rib tips! Good food overall. Nice portions, prices were decent. Baked beans were a bit spicy but good. Would be nice to have an option for beans with no kick to them. The sauces were good - they all tasted homemade - but got a little overpowering as the meal progressed. They all also had a little heat to them. I've had some fantastic ribs from this place, but lately, when the owner isn't there, the chicken and the ribs end up over cooked and over sauced. Brisket was delicious. Pork was a little dry without sauce but once you add the sauce, yum. I had the sweet sauce and husband had the vinegar sauce, they were both good. Stopped by as we were passing by on I-90 and got a platter to split for 3 of us. It was more than enough food for 3 people. The ribs were excellent with a great bark and were the star of the platter. The brisket had a ton of flavor. The pork was juicy and held the spicy sauce well. And the chicken had great flavor and was juicy as well. All in all an excellent choice. read more

I think this is some of the best commercial barbecue in Northwest Indiana! We have not had a bad meal here and we have been several times. We have taken several friends here, with no complaints. On one trip the flies were a little bothersome, but we still come back for the bbq. The cleanliness is average to below average, maybe because they put all of their effort into the bbq. read more

Tried this for the first time tonight. I had the brisket dinner and Joan had the BBQ beef sandwich. We tried the spicy sauce. The owner let us sample the Carolina Hot Sauce. A little to hot for our liking the spicy was pretty good. We will try the sweet sauce next time. The brisket comes with two side orders for less than 10 bucks. I am stuffed right now and Joan is doing pretty good too. I would order the brisket again at dinner time; but a sandwich at lunch time. The brisket is so good; you can almost cut them with a fork. Ok BBQ. Nothing too exciting but decent. The baked beans were pretty good. Had the pork and spicy sauce. Very little sauce on the sandwich and the spicy wasn't spicy at all. Pork was tender and pretty good by itself but BBQ should have sauce. read more

If you like pulled pork for dinner, this is the best place around. The ambiance isn't anything spectacular, but it gives it character and reminds us why locals appreciate it so much...the FOOD!!! LaPorte doesn't have a grand selection when it comes to good eats and this restaurant is a diamond in the rough. The fries are killer...obviously bad for you, but they're oh so gooood! Treat yourself, why don't ya! All the sides are delish and honestly you can't go wrong with any of them. Anyone who gave this place a poor review obliviously did not come in for lunch on "wings Wednesday". They are the best bbq chicken wings period! They are large and oh so damn good. Ask for the sauce on the side for dipping. Sauce selections are sweet, hot, spicy and the spiciest being 'shut up'. They're all unbelievably awesome. Here's another tip. Get their fries to go along with the meal. Best french fries ever. Crispy on the outside with the ends burnt a little in a good way and nice and tender on the inside. Don't waste your time with ketchup the bbq sauce on the fries is so much better (another reason to get the sauce on the side). As some others have said if you are looking for some sort of ambiance, nice decor or whatever keep driving, this is a bbq joint. Yes, the air waffs of the smokey aroma of meat that will have you salivating the moment you walk up to the door. Not sure what some of these guys reviewing on here are expecting from a bbq but after reading their reviews they should turn in their man card immediately. Haven't had a BAD experience yet! Overall the food has consistently been great. Now there's not much competition for BBQ in these parts, which is disappointing. However, from working in Lake Co and getting to know what good BBQ tastes like from places like Tennessee, I have to say this place is pretty damn good. I usually only get it to go, so my experiences are not influenced by decor or the interior seating areas condition. Which to be honest, I don't feel that BBQ is about that style of dining. If your worried about whether or not the chairs have cushions or the table covers are from this decade, BBQ isn't for you. Yea the smoke is heavy as soon as you walk in, but if that bugs you, then SMOKED meats probably isn't your thing. I never write reviews but i must say far as BBQ goes this place was TERRIBLE!!!! I got the special of the day which was rib tip dinner with fries . The tips couldnt have been cooked on a grill, it taste like boil mushed meat covered with sauce laying in grease. The fries taste like sticks of warmed up cardboard. It was terrible. Just tried Northside BBQ for the first time tonight...extremely glad we did! Huge portions, extremely affordable, and a great little place in general. The staff is very friendly and the food is great! For being nowhere near the South and their great BBQ, this is as close as it gets! Definitely a must-try for anyone in the area that likes BBQ...don't let the outside of the building scare you. It is a little outdated, but the inside is very clean and the smells are great! We will for sure be going back again and again. read more

Behind the nondescript strip shopping exterior around the corner from Pine Lake is a delicious BBQ restaurant. I loved the pulled pork sandwich. The bread was fresh, pork was piled on and the sauce -- many choices here - was tangy. Not sure how they prepared my wife's chicken breast. The pork tasted like it was already chewed up before being slapped on a wonder bread bun (not toasted, so it fell apart). It was also not very hot and had very little flavor. Fries were burnt. Counter guy was not very friendly but the guy on the grill or whatever at least smiled and acknowledged the customers behind us (not us, though). Disappointing. Interior leaves much to be desired. Pretty decent BBQ, I like that you can choose your sauce from mild to spicy. The portions are big and the pricing is reasonable. The only down side is that it can get noisy in there if it has a full house. But don't let that stop you, it is definitely good food. read more

Today I tried Northside BBQ for the first time. Let me preface this really quickly - I am as picky as they come when it comes to barbecue. I ordered the pulled pork with coleslaw and potato salad on the side. I've had some really messed up pulled pork in my day and was a little nervous at first, but I was proven really wrong! The pork was cooked very well - very tender and shreddy. It had a good balance of sauce and char. The sauce (sweet) was actually sweet (Yay!) and had a hint of chili flavor and spice. The coleslaw reminded me of KFC's (which I like) but it tasted a bit of onion and black pepper. The potato salad! Yum! It was loaded with black pepper and was really good. I didn't dine in, so I can't comment about the ambience. I'll be back to try the brisket soon! read more
