The Clearwater School

The Clearwater School

The Clearwater School is a true testament to the values of diversity, inclusion, and community…read more Within a year of being there, my 8-year-old son (then six), who had never before felt comfortable in social groups outside his family, began calling this place his second home. He was given the time and space to build relationships with staff and other students at his own pace, always supported but never rushed. Children at Clearwater learn what they are interested in, developing one of the most valuable lifelong skills--how to learn. Through observation and thoughtful discussions with students, staff, and family, my son has deepened his understanding of people, the world around him, and, most importantly, himself. In his two years at Clearwater, he has learned to navigate conflicts through the Justice Committee, advocate for his needs through the democratic process, and appreciate the significance of friendship, culture, and responsibility within a community. And along the way, he has also learned to read, perform arithmetic, estimate probability and statistics, and explore physics through hands-on construction. He loves drawing, music, and the logic of computer programming--all interests that have flourished in an environment where curiosity is nurtured. I am incredibly grateful for the existence of this school and the role it plays in my son's life--and in our family's life.

The mixed ages were a concern for us at first, but our experience has been that it creates a beautiful caring community that accommodates different ages and abilities. We love the staff (most have been there for over 5 years) and our kids are thriving!

My son has grown immensely in his three years and my daughter has come out of her shell in her first two. I cannot thank the staff enough for investing in my children; they have gone above and beyond any expectations and have treated my family like their own. We wanted our children to know and love Jesus while getting a first class education: HCA does exactly that.

The P5 teacher Jennifer is exactly the same but hides behind the director. Encouraged my family to seek an IEP solely as a means to kick my kindergarten age daughters out. Tried to circumvent the IEP process by trying to reach out to the care team to gain a recommendation that supported their goal of kicking my kid out. When that failed the principal lied about what the care team recommended. Bullied, harassed, and finally attempted to blackmail my family into voluntarily pulling my kid out in the last few months of the school year. This behavior started escalating the day of our IEP assessment and ended in a forced reduction of service before any accommodation request was made. This was after a glowing assessment of my daughter's growth. When I made a complaint about discrimination against the Preschool Director they declined to investigate without so much as a call to discuss my concerns.

This review is solely based on my current experience trying to get my son situated for kindergarten…read more(2018-19 school year). When my husband and I bought our house, a big draw was the school district. Flash forward five years and our son is ready to start. What a nightmare this experience has been. Not only is our local school overcrowded (Fernwood) but we are being sent to Frank Love for kindergarten. Between the front office staff in both schools being extremely uninformative and curt when I ask questions to the before and after school programs not being helpful (looking at you, Northshore YMCA) I have started calling around to private and/or Montessori schools in the neighborhood just to get out of this mess. (Don't get your hopes up, folks - they're all booked too). I've asked for a deference to a school that's closer so that I can keep my son is his current daycare for before and after care but have been told "you probably won't get it but it's your right to try" and that they couldn't tell me whether or not I'd qualify until the last week of August. This is not only inconvenient for my current daycare provider but for my son and my husband and I as well. On top of the before and after school care issues, we've been told that bus rides are now 50 minutes long. To go five miles. Are we serious?? The school district website is a mess - most schools aren't up to date (Frank Love hasn't had a new letter from the principal since 2016) and, quite frankly, this whole experience has made me want to put my kid into another district completely. There is no consistency, nobody is aligned and the overcrowding is flat out annoying. Get it together Northshore. You aren't instilling confidence in new parents to the district, you're making it very inconvenient for parents who have kids in two different elementary schools and your staff needs some serious training (both office and teaching). This trickles from the top down so maybe we need to start looking at our superintendent and assistant superintendent for resolve.

My son's teacher, Leslie West, has been truly extraordinary. She listens to the kids with real interest, respects them as individuals, and creates a classroom culture that is both joyful and caring. With her guidance, my son has grown in so many ways; he takes pride in caring for himself, loves to help others, and feels capable of learning and doing things on his own. The school clearly values educators who nurture the whole child, and that shines through in everything they do. We're so grateful for Evergreen Academy and can't recommend it highly enough.

She always looked forward to school, especially the weekly Friday show-and-tell, where she felt excited to share her thoughts. The hands-on, theme-based activities--like growing a pumpkin in the fall and observing a ladybug's metamorphosis in the spring--made learning engaging and meaningful. My daughter truly loved her class, and we are very grateful to Ms. Leslie West for her care, creativity, and dedication. Thank you for making such a positive difference in her early learning years.
