I've been fairly happy with this place for the 12 years I have been with them. The thing I like about this place, is that even though there are a group of Dr.s , you only have to see your "main" Dr. (unless there is some sort of emergency and your regular Dr. is not in). I think in 12 years that I have gone there with my three kids, I have seen another Dr. only twice. (never for just check ups).
I have been with Dr. Marvin Cooper for 12 years. I do think he is retiring soon, but he has given me a good 12 years. He dealt with my very premature daughter with ease and visited her in the hospital. He also came for my other two as well after they were born and came and talked to me in my room. ( I think it's a normal practice, but not sure)
If you call with any questions they will immediately put you through to the Dr. even if he is with a patient. I appreciate that, and because of that have no problems if he takes a moment to answer a concerned parent's phone call during an exam.
I am taking a star away, because although he has been pretty good all this time, there have been a few moments where I think he could have been a little more charismatic with me.....and the biggest thing happened the last time I was there. He pushed the new HP vaccine for my then 10 and 11 year old. I was a little skeptical but I trust him for the most part and went along with the first shot. I go to pay, and since my insurance doesn't take care of "well care" after age 2.....I pay out of pocket for check ups....including shots. I almost DIED...when I heard that EACH SHOT (they need three ) costs $150. I have two kids getting the shot...so that was $300. If I finished the series it would cost me $900 and they never told me that before I agreed. I think it was an exceptionally expensive shot and they knew I paid out of pocket to even tell me the price before I agreed. It wasn't like a necessary shot or anything. My husband called to complain because I was mortified that I just paid so much for a shot. After some complaining....they comped both shots....but I still didn't appreciate them not telling me up front, the out of ordinary cost for an elective shot, that I wasn't even 100% sold on to begin with.
Since then I have had to call to ask a medical question about a sick kid, and as usual he was very laid back about it, and in my opinion diagnosed her problem with ease. He usually only tells people to come in, if he is genuinely concerned and i have always liked this about him . He doesn't jump to horrible conclusions and scare you...and he has pretty much always been on the mark about everything.
One problem won't necessarily make me leave....but that whole shot thing, left a bad taste in my mouth.
Good place however if looking for a good pediatrician. They also have a young, new Dr. in....who I also like, so when he retires, I will probably go with her. I can't think of her name for the life of me, but I had to deal with her one time while calling the night phone service and was very helpful and genuinely cared. She even called me back the next day personally to see how she was doing and offered for me to come in (when the office was closed) if I was really concerned and wanted her to see my child briefly. I did, and we were the only ones in the office. She came in to get some paperwork and offered a quick check up if I wanted. I thought that was nice.
Overall pretty happy with this place. No condescending Dr.'s here...... read more
