I put together a decent computer for my cousin last year. An AMD socket 939 4600+ dual core CPU,…read moreEpox 9NPA3+ motherboard, two gigabytes of DDR 400 RAM, an Nvidia 7900 PCIE video card, and Seagate 500 gigabyte hard drive. These were all used parts (with the exception of the hard drive), but in good condition. Sadly, after only having it for about nine months, it began to have some problems. Since I live so far away, I advised her to take it to a nearby computer servicer to have it checked out. So she brought it to Computer Mechanix, and they diagnosed it as having a bad motherboard. I was a little suspicious of this diagnosis, but I sent her a spare motherboard/memory/CPU combination that I had. I didn't ask what they quoted her for the swap. Some time went by, and I finally asked her if she had ever had it repaired. She told me that she was still saving money to have it done. I asked her what they wanted for swapping in the replacement motherboard, and she told me the quote was $320.00! I had her ship the computer and the spare motherboard combo back to me, and I would do it for her. Three hundred and twenty dollars to swap a motherboard and reinstall the customer's copy of Windows seems somewhat high to me. But I've never had to pay anyone to work on my computer, so maybe that is about industry standard. But here is the sad part; within a half an hour of pulling it out of the box, I had determined that there was nothing wrong with the motherboard. The failing component was the video card. I swapped in an Nvidia 9500 GT card, and the computer worked perfectly! If they had bothered to do the job she paid them to do (correctly diagnose the problem with her computer) they would have discovered that, sold her another inexpensive video card (maybe $100.00 parts and labor?) and she would have had her computer back months ago. People like myself have spare parts lying around, which makes it easy to diagnose a hardware issue such as this. People like my cousin do not, and have to rely on businesses such as Computer Mechanix to do it for them. I am an amateur, and I found the actual problem in less than an hour. My advice would be to take your computer somewhere else if you need to have it serviced.

Thank you Brian! I called, left a message, you answered and were there the same day! What great…read moreservice! My infected computer was cleaned and runs like new! All that without breaking the bank!! Sue B

I have had a fair amount of computer repairs done over the past 12 years. My experiences with…read morerepair places have ranged from as expected to downright bad. Recently I had a sudden PC failure, and it was of no fault of my own. In spite of trying many things, in the end I had to get a repair done and the place I usually take it to was unable to provide services. So, I called around and I rather got no return call, the business had very limited days and hours, and if I did get someone the quote was so high that I would be better off buying a new computer. I did call Brian on the suggestion of many and he returned my call within an hour. He found out what was going on and by that evening I had my laptop dropped off to him. By 8am the very next day he already had my laptop up and running and ready to be returned. Best part was, the price to repair was so shocking to me because I was expecting to have to scrape my bank account down to nothing (meaning just a tad under $200), but nope. The repair price was beyond what I felt was fair. Try like 50% less than I thought it would be. Not only that, but he actually dropped my laptop back off right to by door, went the extra mile to provide my files on a jump drive even tho he saved them and had them reinstalled back on laptop. He also provided me with a few little extra items and one being a book he wrote called, "Where's The Real You In Technology". Nope, no extra charge for that. His service was beyond stellar. He was kind, he listened, and he laid out the plan. NO surprises, no confusion, and in the end no extra stress for me such as wondering what was going on, waiting days, if not weeks to get my computer back, and no worries about surprise price increases. So, if you need someone to be honest, return your calls, be willing to go beyond expectation to make sure you get your computer back in working order in reasonable time, keeps you in the know, and above all... Beyond reasonable prices for his services and work..... this is the business you need to call. He has me as a returning customer until he no longer does it. You can't go wrong here. Thank you again, Brian!
