Since 1928, Northern Communities Credit Union has been serving our members and our communities in Northern Minnesota. With offices in both Duluth and Virginia/Mt. Iron, we come from cities that are famous for their beautiful bridges. We would like to bridge the gap between financial institution and member, individual and community, financial struggle and financial success.

History

Established in 1928.

Since 1928, Northern Communities Credit Union has served residents of St. Louis County through a wide variety of financial products and services. We started out as Duluth City and County Employee Credit Union, but opened our membership in 2003 to 'anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in St. Louis County, or is the blood relative of someone who fits this criteria.' 'People Helping People' has been the credo of our industry for many years. That's the way credit unions are run - for your benefit as our members and owners, rather than for shareholders who expect a profit made from your hard-earned money. Throughout our history, we've devoted ourselves to providing the 'credit union difference' to our members each day, in a way that will help them reach their financial goals. Wells Fargo Hermantown MN. by far the worst customer service ever ! first it started with trying to…read morecall and speak with a banker 9 calls over two days and no one answered just an automated generic voice pushing to get the mobile app to make an appointment. next I drove to the Wells Fargo in Hermantown MN on the Haines RD and was met by the roaming greater I asked to see a banker, and she said I needed to make an appointment she then asked what I needed I said a bank draft check from our savings account, and she said a teller could help me so I went to the teller gave her my id and told her what I needed after several minutes she said I didn't have a savings account with them just an Auto loan so she said I needed to speak with a banker so i sat down and waited several minutes and now the roaming greeter comes back and tells me that I do not have an account with them and should go home 19 miles away and get one of my statements to prove that I have an account. now I am getting a little annoyed. on my way home I stopped by Wells Fargo bank in Kenwood Duluth expecting the same as Hermantown. went to the teller line gave her my ID and told her the same thing that I wanted a bank draft check with money from my savings account. she told me there would be a ten-dollar charge for the bank draft I said that would be fine and two minutes later she handed me the check. what the hell! so all three of my accounts are going to be closed and moved to Northshore Bank.

Bilked fees out of a 94 year old Grandma! My 94 Year old…read moremother in law sent a birthday card to my son. When the card never arrived she called the bank worried about the check she had enclosed. The bank then recommended she place a stop payment on the check and charged her $32. When I called the bank on her behalf and explained she lived on social security and would like them to reverse the fee, that $32 was the cost of one of her medications and it cost the bank nothing to stop payment, the teller was cold as ice. This was a supervisor not a teller, that just kept saying "she requested (at the banks recommendation) the stop payment so I am not going to reverse the fee". She has banked there for 50 years! Who issues a stop payment on a birthday check in 2020? I would never recommend this bank!

They will stick you with a fee of like $7 for every hundred dollars that the check is. If you do have a bank account there the tellers are nice and if you are a merchant then you get to jump in a smaller line to make deposits. The only reason I ended up closing my account here is beaches I use a credit union now and don't have a use for 5 bank accounts.

I called during their regular office hours. Have you ever called a doctor's office and gotten the menu to push numerous suggestions of buttons to push for your problem to be solved? That's what I was hearing. I left my message of not renewing my policy. After all the years of being with this local agency, having never met the owner, I think it was his voice going through the menu options. I called the DeSmet Agency on a Sunday afternoon, knowing they weren't open, but wanting a quote to see if I could do better with the exact same coverage. I left my message. The next morning, Monday, I received a call from Mr. Tim DeSmet, and we discussed my options. In less than an hour later, Mr. DeSmet called back with a quote. It's a good thing I was sitting down. With his diligence, Mr. DeSmet's quote would be saving me $538.40 a year!!! When I came into his office to start my policy with my new company, Mr. Tim DeSmet personally greeted me and shook my hand. Before this day, I was ignorant of knowing about DeSmet Agency because I blindly trusted an agency I thought was doing the best for me. I goofed but got wiser when that inflated car insurance bill arrived a couple of weeks ago. Why would anyone choose another agency?

You are just a number to Elroy. I had my taxes done by him one year. We met up and talked about…read moremusic and work and life, weeks later I went back in to sign some papers and discuss my return and talked more about life and music and his dog. The next year I showed up and he had no idea who I was and if he did my taxes and asked if one of his associates could take me for the year. I come to find out that his other employees were let go or left on their own. needless to say I didn't stick around. I think most people want their tax advisor to pretend that they know you and care about your finances.

As I called to check on progress after the tax deadline, Josh said he would have to give it all back as they were having problems in the office. I was left in the lurch.
