I was again greeted by a very pleasant woman who swiftly moved me through the renewal process. We had a pleasant conversation regarding my new picture and my 23 years of living in TX as opposed to Mass. I walked out at 9 AM at exactly my appointment time! Winner winner chicken dinner! This locale has plenty of parking and many DPS folks to assist. Pro tip: Make sure you bring all the required paperwork or you will be SOOLuck and have to reschedule.

I waited less than 5 minutes and handed the agent the paper; it expedited things. I didn't have to start from the beginning. I had two issues that involved a lot of questions on my side. I was glad that she could answer everything, especially clarifying something I've been confused about for months. One thing I think they can improve on is being friendly. This employee wasn't rude, but she wasn't friendly. She was simply all business. That technically is appropriate, so I can't knock her for that, but a smile or positive attitude of a customer-facing employee would be nice.

I think I caught on five minutes before when I was helping this lady fill out her registration papers. You see, English was her second language, so I was helping her, and that's how I found out I should be filling out papers, too. I told her she needs to be helping me. But it got worse on my end and the lady's end that I was helping. I got to the counter, and the nice lady told me we were supposed to be filling out the New State Registration Papers. So, with all that being said, the process did not take no more than 30 minutes. It was still a quick process. Yes, I suggested taking another number and starting from scratch, and the process was still fast. Now, let me tell you a little about the building. I parked toward the front. But that isn't where you go inside. The front door is in the back of the building. I parked in the wrong area. Also, as you go inside, you can use your phone to get a number or check in on the computer. Also, there are two lobbies--one to the right and one to the left. You can't see the one to the right. So if they call to come to counter five, go to the right.

I entered the office which was very quiet and not too busy, small and clean. I checked in on the pad and then realized I needed my cell phone to be aware of when it was my turn, so I went to hobble out and get my phone when a lady came out the door and said come back in I will take care of you. Since I needed to provide verification of date of birth to start Medicare, a trip to the office was required. Fortunately, there is a location just 2 miles from us in SW Austin. The facility is large, clean and institutional. Wouldn't expect anything different. The waiting area is large, with lot's of seats. There were clean restrooms and water dispensers. You cannot bring in food/drink, no biggie. Once we arrived, I expected a decent wait time, so brought the spousey to join me and we just enjoyed each other during the wait. When we entered, not really knowing next steps, I went to ask the gentlemen in a uniform for direction behind a counter. I barely got out, Good Afternoon, I was.... well cutoff.. and told, check in at the kiosk as he pointed to the thingy to my left and went back to what was more important than helping me. Look, I feel for these folks who have these jobs. I'm sure they work with a great deal of angst from folks, not getting what they think they deserve from the system and may be the target of their discontent. However, it would be nice if he would of let me finish my statement, perhaps a smile, but not today. Hit up the kiosk, checked in, got a ticket and we sat and watched the monitor for when it was our time. As you are informed, your wait my be longer or shorter then others already in the room. He eliminated my fears that I may have been a little late to apply, took my identification, including my Dutch birth certificate, passport and TDL to make copies. We headed out and I made a point to walk out by the counter, smiled really big at the same gentlemen and thanked the dude and wished him a good afternoon. The State Capitol has a lot of great Texas history embedded in these walls and the floors of the building. It's hard to believe my older brother had never been to the State Capitol, so we decided to visit. He was in the military for 20 years mostly overseas so we extend grace. The Texas State Capitol is one of Austin's most important landmarks. The building was completed in 1888 and houses the Texas Legislature and the Governor's offices. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark. Interestingly,, the Capitol is taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

As of 11:00 am they have called 4 people. Every time someone completes their appointment with the employee, they close the blinds and it takes 30 min to call a new person back. You can hear them behind the glass (with the blinds closed) laughing and giggling. No sense of urgency to do their job. It's sad that's what our hard earned tax dollars pay for. The waiting room is full and no end in sight.

After scheduling my appointment I received a text message with the appointment confirmation of the date and time and a link that allowed me to check in online once I was there. I also received an email reminder. On the day of my appointment I drove into the parking lot, parked, clicked the link that was texted to me and I was checked in and received a DPS ticket number. I then walked in, waited in a line to speak with someone working at the desk. A friendly woman checked my documents, gave me some paperwork to fill out, and then told me to sit and wait in the waiting area. I sat at a table, filled out my paperwork and waited. I waited for about an hour and a half. During my wait several people that worked there came out and made announcements. They were there to help. When they finally called out my number I was relieved that the wait was over. The woman that was working behind the counter was friendly. She checked my documents, and then told me where to stand and took my photo. I paid, she gave me my paperwork and it was done. This process went really fast and took less than 10 minutes. Overall it wasn't a bad experience it was just very time consuming. The appointment time was at 10:40 and I left at 12:20. You will wait a long time before being seen but a positive is that everyone that worked there was friendly and helpful. A side note. Be sure to take hand sanitizer and some sanitizer wipes. I used the women's restroom and they were clean but they didn't have any soap in the dispenser and the large hand sanitizer bottle on the sink was empty. So take something with you to clean your hands just in case.

My appointment was at three, I arrived a few minutes early and was out of there around 4 o'clock. The clerk that assisted me was very helpful and friendly. It was an overall successful trip and some pretty good people watching while I waited.
