Our kids have been patients of North Suburban Pediatrics for 19+ years and we have been happy with the services received, until our doctor retired and we were handed over to Dr. Kelli Hatter. During the annual checkup covered by our PPO insurance, Dr. Hatter refused a blood test that has been done by the practice for years and she submitted 3 bills to the insurance company: one for Teen wellness exam, one of Doctor's visit and one for Medical/professional services all for 15 minutes my daughter spent with her. When I expressed my disagreement to the office that I am unwilling to pay for the extra charges, they sent me a letter to look for a different practice. If the annual visit is not for asking the doctor's professional opinion, then what is it for? It seems that Dr Hatter is more focused on billing patients, than of their wellbeing. If you are choosing North Suburban Pediatrics do yourself a favor and avoid Dr. Kelli Hatter. read more

We love the doctors here. They are personal, competent and get back to you if you have any questions. The reason for 4 and 5 stars is I found it surprising that they charge an extra fee for filling out the Illinois State Health Exam form that I need to enroll our daughter in elementary school after her annual visit. Maybe other practices do this as well - it was a surprise and should have been explained to us as this was not the case at our previous pediatrician. read more

They sent an email for younger than 5 Covid vaccinations- congratulated us that we got the appointment- we arrived on time- waited around- and were first told by a nice person, who looked like Molly Shannon, we needed our records sent there. (Side note: they should have had them pre pandemic February 2020 but something was wrong on their end at that point.) Then the desk nurse bum rushed us out of the waiting room because they don't take blue cross. I'm scratching my head why BCBS is not viable? This is just an ordinary clinic. Why the elitism?!? This was just to administer a free shot. (Or a series of shots) Moral of our misadventure today: if you lose your Cigna coverage they will refuse to help you. read more

We absolutely love this place! Dr. DePaul has been amazing in every way! She's treating the kids like her own, she's experienced and I love her common sense approach. I appreciate that they have walk-in hours in the morning and are available on weekends, too plus they have a doctor on call to answer any questions during off hours. Not a bad doctor in the practice. We've seen Dr. Christian since before my daughter was even born and never once have I been even remotely interested in looking for someone new. She is kind, attentive and ON TIME! For after-care, we've seen nearly every doctor (and talked to quite a few in the middle of the night as well!) and each has given us the same level of service. read more

There's a lot I liked about the practice-- it's big and they will always squeeze you in if you have an emergency. The staff is generally friendly, and we really liked our main doctor-- Dr. Grygotis. That said, the downside of the big practice is its very anonymous and impersonal. Almost shockingly so. The front desk can, at times, be disorganized, and you'll often have to call a few times to get vaccine records and the like. And, if you take end-of-the-day appointments, as we often did, you'll have to wait. Finally, once they take you into the exam room, I recommend not heeding their advice about getting your infant or toddler undressed until you have to- there's nothing worse than sitting in a chilly office with a naked child. read more

We have been so happy with the doctors here. They have been seeing our 4 year old for two years, and our 9-month-old since he was born. I love that in urgent care situations they make same-day appointments for the evening. We have taken advantage of this four or five times in the last year and it is so convenient (especially for working parents). Even at 7pm after a presumably very long day, the doctors are always patient and conscientious. (Also, I admit, I am delighted to see one-star reviews from people who have been told to leave the practice because they are anti-vaccine. We had an exposure-to-mumps scare when our daughter was 2 months old, in the waiting room at another doctor's office. It was so scary! I am happy that the kids I am sharing the waiting room with are vaccinated as much as possible.) read more

I wish more parents would rate doctors/ and medical groups. Trying to find a doctor is a hard process. I called to inquire if they were taking patients and I wasn't really thrilled with the receptionist. I was hesitant to have my son's doctor send his medical information here because I was unsure about this group. I read some great reviews but still didnt know. Well we moved to the area and I knew I needed to get a pediatriation for my son set up asap. I just decided to go with this group since I work across the street and its close to where we live. Well I made a great choice! This week I called to setup a flu vaccine. The nurse, Debbie, I think, took my call reviewed my chart. She wanted to be certain that Dr. Christain didn't need to see my son since he was a new patient and asked if I could wait until she review my chart since she still neede to do that. I was fine with that. She followed up to let me know I could make an appointment and that we didn't need to come in to see Dr. Christain. I was shocked really that she took the time to look through his chart and follow up on this. But that is not the only great experience. My son has been battling a cold for 3 weeks now was super crabby and fussy, just not like himself. I called after I picked him up from daycare and was able to get him in that evening. I was quickly checked in and we were taken back to a room. Dr. Andy met with us, made my crabby little guy laugh and listend to what was going on. He made a quick diagnosis and helped me locate the nearst pharmacy since I didn't really know where one was that was close to where we lived. He then drew us a map as to the fastest way to get there. Such a nice guy! This group has great staff and doctors. Their hours are great as well! Being able to come in the evening for sickl vists is great and weekend and holiday hours, is a godsend. read more

Everything seems great (until it's not) .... Pros: Location. The doctor we saw (a younger one) was extremely nice. Cons: Inefficient office staff. Horribly rude service attitude (all of the way to the top). Suggestion: Office Procedures 101 is in order (followed by a customer service refresher, and perhaps a productivity class). We started at this practice when our daughter was a few months old. It seemed great at first. Then when my daughter had severe diaper rash and it wouldn't go away, we called to get an appointment. The nurse told us to put triple paste on it and if it wasn't cracked and bleeding there wasn't any reason to come in. The point was to PREVENT that. Then our daughter had an issue with swelling in her breast. We did antibiotics at first which didn't help. We came back several times only to be told it wasn't anything to worry about. We saw a different doctor in the practice for something else and he also looked at her breast and immediately referred us to an endocrinologist. Luckily, it has since resolved but we are still watching her. My daughter also has a history of bad reactions to vaccinations. Just to clariy - we are by NO means anti-vaxxers. (I work in health care.) I just want to give her 1 vaccine at a time and space them out (which according to the CDC and the WHO is perfectly acceptable) to reduce the chances of a reaction. When she was a year old, I wanted to wait on her varicella vaccine. I was given loads of misinformation about the virus from the doctor and when I still refused to give it to her any sooner, I was told I can be kicked out of the practice for not vaccinating. I was still well within the CDC guidelines. Thats when we said we're done. (And my daughter is now 2 and is current on all of her vaccinations including varicella.) We now go to a wonderful practice that isn't oversized or over burdended. Also Lainie K talked about being denied care because she owed the practice money. The practice replied to her review and denied that they do this. Well 2 very close friends of ours have had this exact same thing happen to them. read more

As first time parents, we were so nervous about where to take our newborn baby. Dr. Ben Kornfeld at North Suburban Pediatrics made us feel so comfortable and confident as parents! He cares deeply about his patients and he did an amazing job taking care of our son. He is kind, understanding, and listens to any concerns or questions you might have without judgement. He has children of his own and totally gets it. He is responsive to e-mails and gave us the very best recommendations when we had concerns. We are moving and we are sad to leave his care. We LOVE our pediatrician!!! We have been with the practice since our first child was born 9 years ago, and the doctors have been with us in sickness and health and everywhere in between. They are committed to the health and well-being of the kids. They have sick hours for walk-ins and appointments for all schedules. My daughter had very bad headache, when I called to the office they reduced to see her and help her just because she did not go to the office for 5 years ( she has not been seek for five years). They said that because of this she is not their patient anymore. To become their patient again she first should do regular check in. I asked can the doctor help now and the answer was -NO. read more

We have been taking my daughter to Dr. Christian her whole life (she's 5 now). We had already decided on Dr. Christian, because of recommendations from friends, and she just so happened to be the doctor on call the night my daughter was born at Evanston Northwestern (now Northshore) which was nice. I have always appreciated her matter-of-fact attitude about the fact that sometimes parenting is hard and it is OK that I am worried about something that I shouldn't be worried about. She answers my millions of questions with knowledge and confidence. Dr. Christian made me laugh through my tears when my daughter was a very colicky/acid refluxy baby that cried 24/7. She gets back to me quickly when I leave a message for her and she is always very compassionate with my daughter who gets nervous about certain things (like a strep throat culture). And she always makes me feel like while I am sure she is very busy, she has time for me and my daughter. We've seen most of the other doctors in the practice and the younger ones are really great...Dr. Andy ordered for my daughter to be able to keep the chest x-rays when we were worried she had bronchitis. It was really cool, she took the xrays to school to show her class. We did have a not so positive with one of "the old guys". He was rough with my daughter and rather than explaining what was going to happen, he just held her down and did it...I spent the next 20 minutes holding her while she cried. :( Best of all, they have a doctor on call 24/7 so that you can call them at 2:00 in the morning when you are worried about your sick child and they don't make you feel bad for bothering them. They have weekend hours and early morning walk ins. We have never had trouble getting an appointment. I feel like we are in great hands at North Suburban Pediatrics and am grateful that they were recommended. read more

We had to choose a new pediatric practice at the last minute when my daughter was born because of insurance confusion, so I chose this one in a haze while my three-day-old was sleeping based on internet reviews and a couple recommendations. Two days later, we were in the office for her first well-baby visit. I'm so glad we ended up here. We saw Dr. Messing for 2 years (so sad to leave when we moved), and I loved how thorough, compassionate and upbeat she is. Definite warm-fuzzies, but she is also professional and knowledgeable, and never seemed judgmental of my parenting decisions or when she had to explain something to me. It helps when you feel like your pediatrician actually likes you and your kid, especially as a first-time parent. As far as I've seen, this place runs like a well-oiled machine. The receptionists and nurses are kind and helpful, and it's always easy to schedule our next well visit. One great thing about this practice is that you can potentially schedule a sick visit any day of the year except Christmas Day. That's ANY day, including Sundays if necessary (costs extra). We used a Sunday visit once, as well as called the doctor-on-call number after hours a few times, and the walk-in sick hour in the morning. Such peace of mind knowing you can access quality non-emergency care with someone you know, basically any time you need it. Parking is free and easy - you get a parking pass on your first visit that you can keep in your car for all future visits. As with most practices, the earlier in the day you schedule the appointment the less of a chance you will have to wait past your appointment time. But the atmosphere is calm and pleasant, and I never had to wait long. Tbh, I miss this practice! read more

Dr. Ben is an amazing doctor. My husband attended a Dads Class and Dr. Ben was the class instructor. My husband really liked him so we decided to make him our son's pediatrician. He is such a wonderful doctor and his practice has great hours too. Dr. Ben is also a certified lactation consultant and I found this to be very beneficial in my quest to breastfeed. This is our first child and we are so happy we found Dr. Ben and his practice; he truly cares about his patients and even gives you his email for questions and concerns! read more

North Shore Pediactrics Doctors and staff are EXCEPTIONAL!!! I really cannot say enough wonderful things about this practice. My son was seen by Dr. Andy Bernstein when he was just 12 hours old and besides those rare occations when we see another doctor in this practice we see Dr. Andy, the last time was for my sons 10 year check up. He is such a good doctor and person. His bedside manor is great, he explains any of my concerns and or questions in detail. I have yet to contact him or his staff and walked away with anything less than 100% satisfaction. Back when I was a new mom, I had plenty of concerns about all of the mixed media surrounding vaccines. After speaking to Dr. Andy he quelled any objections I had and educated me on the bennifits. We have been through 2 ear tube operations, flus, colds, medications, growing pains, rashes the list goes on. I wouldn't trade this practice or Doctor Andy for anything. Thank you for going above and beyond with us for the last 10 years...here is to the next 8 or whenever you tell us he is too old to see a pediatrican anymore. read more

We just left this practice because it felt increasing impersonal, our doctor and others seemed stretched thin, and we became concerned that the quality of care was becoming less consistent. We had misdiagnoses or delayed diagnoses on two occasions, one of which had a very serious impact on our son's health. Mistakes happen but even more concerning was the general attitude of the physicians and the front office staff, who seemed less caring over time. Our pediatrician -- who seemed very committed when we first started--began our last physical by listing the things he would NOT talk to us about and he expected us to talk to a specialist about. The front office staff double-billed me and complained because my insurance hadn't paid them for a claim filed *three days earlier.* The real evidence of how impersonal this practice has become and how fragmented the care came a few months ago. I don't live in Evanston, and I drive from the northside of the city to take my kids to this practice. Dr Andy is a fantastic pediatrician. He really listens and cares about his patients. He always answers questions and is never too busy. I've also had to see other doctors in the practice for sick visits and they are all phenominal. We love our pediatrician. Dr. Messing is wonderful with our daughter and with answering any questions we have. They're usually pretty quick at getting you in a room and seeing you, which is a must with an infant. Parking could get hairy as the lot is small, but so far we haven't had any issues getting a spot. We were removed from this medical group because a doctor at the practice lacked the empathy and compassion when we were bringing our one year old in for his check up. The issue arose out of vaccines. My wife and I had a deep seated fear and wanted to spread the vaccines out, yet still get all the necessary vaccines. Before joining the practice we even let them know this information and were assured that it would be no problem. When my wife visited this last time and went to a new doctor in the group not our main one, she immediately shut her computer and said this practice can't help you, leaving us without a primary care doctor for our little one. Her lack of civility, compassion, and empathy is unconscionable given fears some of us have about medicine. She never bothered to ask why we had the concerns and what was fueling these beliefs. You should never make people feel small. Her arrogance and impatience even after my wife said she just wanted a moment to call me and discuss, showed a remarkable lack of professionalism and a lack of human dignity. She proceeded to go out to the lobby and tell the staff, My wife was so distraught we do not even remember getting our copay back. How embarrassing and sad. In my years in business and customer satisfaction this will be the first time I write a review asking people to refrain from ever using this group. It is sad it had to involve the safety, health and welfare of an innocent 1 year old. read more

I have been taking my daughter here since she was born 20 months ago. Being a first-time parent, I was a little freaked out by the process of searching for a pediatrician and ended up looking close to where I work for convenience. I loved this practice because the doctors took the time to meet with us before my daughter was born so we could get a feel for whether they would be a good fit for us. We met several of the doctors there before deciding on our current pediatrician and never looked back. The practice is clean and organized, with friendly staff. We have never had a problem getting an appointment for a well-child or sick visit and have never had to wait a long time once we get there. The nurses are friendly and cheerful...don't know how they manage the second part because all they see is wailing babies all day!! They are open on weekends and do not charge a fee for phone calls after hours. The icing on the cake...my daughter's pediatrician came to visit her the day she was born, plucked her out of my arms and danced with her to calm her down. I was totally and completely sold from that moment on! read more

Dr. Elwell is the best. She is calm, nice and totally trustworthy. She calls back promptly and answers each question patiently. I have seen a majority of the doctors there due to random sick visits and I am very comfortable with each of the doctors and their capabilities. The nurses also answer the phones so a majority of the easy questions can be answered right away. read more

The newer doctors have all been very sweet, though the older doctors are often gruff and unresponsive. My main issue is with the front office staff. I have been placed on hold for long periods, even forgotten about. I also have been left waiting in the room with my child (wearing nothing but a diaper and getting very cold) for more than half an hour - more than once. I switched practices. read more

My family has been with this practice for almost 10 years. We started out with Dr. Downey (sad to see him retire!) and then switched to Dr. Christian for our primary care. We have seen almost all of the other doctors in the practice, at one point or another, for sick/urgent visits. Each of our experiences has solidified my confidence in their decisional processes and abilities! The physicians share a joint philosophy of care, so I am always confident that whichever doctor we see will take the same approach as our primary physician would take...excellent! A few examples of superior experiences: While many pediatricians write off fussy, "spitty" babies as just colicky or within the norm, Dr. Burnstine diagnosed my daughter's severe reflux when she was just 4 weeks old. He referred us to a GI specialist who treated her reflux for the next 2.5 years. With proper treatment, my daughter was a completely different baby and was spared the pain and long-term consequences of GERD. I cannot thank Dr. Burnstine enough for that! My son was diagnosed with the allergy/eczema/asthma triad and struggled with respiratory illnesses for years (pneumonia 3 times while under 5 years old). Dr. Christian has been very thorough in helping us to eliminate any potential triggers and to prevent eczema outbreaks. We were also referred to an immunology specialist who ran some blood tests that revealed a "weak spot" in his immune system. By following recommendations and with one additional vaccine, he has been a much healthier kid! One of the greatest things about this practice, though, is the collaboration amongst physicians. One of the scariest moments for us was a visit we had with Dr. Elwell. My son had a strange red rash on his face, and Dr. Elwell was the doctor available to see him that day. She was concerned that it was a "malar" rash (potentially indicative of an autoimmune condition, Lupus). She took pictures of the rash and showed them to one of her senior colleagues who thought that it might be indicative of Fifth disease, a relatively common viral illness. The pictures were also sent to specialists (I believe at the University of Chicago, but I'm not 100% sure which institution it was) who agreed with Dr. Elwell and recommended a complete autoimmune workup. Dr. Elwell took a conservative approach (another thing I love about this practice!) and recommended waiting it out over the weekend. If it was Fifth disease, my son would develop a lacy rash over his entire body within days. If he did not develop that rash, they would draw labs Monday morning to check for an autoimmune condition. It was a stressful weekend for us, and Dr. Elwell called multiple times to check in and to offer support. Thankfully, the lacy rash appeared early Monday morning. No needle stick was needed, and we were spared the substantial fees that would have accompanied the autoimmune workup...excellent! I highly recommend these physicians. They are among the best on the North Shore, and they work together seamlessly! read more

She is a great listener, very easy to reach and always knows how to ease our worries or give us really helpful tips. Completely happy here, and especially with Dr. Elwell. At first I wasn't a fan because she wouldn't do whatever I told her (ie- walk in demanding antibiotics), but then as we stayed I realized it was possibly because her medical degree was worth a little more than my "experience" gleaned from watching Grey's Anatomy and using WebMD. Also, they always have someone available on call, and we have had to use weekend sick visit appointments once or twice and they never made us feel guilty about it. When my daughter is really ill, we never have a problem getting a sick appointment that day. My only complaint is that sometimes you have to wait awhile... never more than 30-45 minutes after the appointment time, but with a squirmy/sick toddler that feels like forever. read more

Just had our first visit here since moving to the area. I had a hard time looking for a new doctor for my son becuase we had a great group and doctor where we were living, but that is out of state. I went with North Suburban because of some great reviews but also because their hours are great for sick visits. I don't tend to rush my son to the doctor being in the medical field but it is great to be able to make an appointment to see someone at 5:15pm on a Friday. While the waiting room does not have a seperate sick kid waiting room, it is quite large and I kept my little booger in a chair far from any toys and other people. We were quickly taken to the treatment room and Dr. Andy saw my son. He is great! My son who was screaming an hour earlier was laughing giving him high fives. He listened to what was going on and confirmed he had a double ear infection. Then since I am new to the area and didn't know where the nearest pharmacy was, he looked up where would be closet and drew me a make of how to avoid traffic. Additionally, I talked with a nurse this week about setting up a flu vaccine for my son. Because we were new to the practice she wanted to double check that Dr. Christian didn't need to see him before hand. She called me back a few days later to followup. Great service, very friendly people, and excellent doctors. I am so glad I went with this group. read more

After some bad experiences at our last practice I interviewed a lot of doctors in the area before settling at North Suburban and I am so happy with our final decision! We see Dr. Elwell although I have heard great things about all of the doctors in the practice. They have great hours (late night hours, are open on holidays, sick hours every day) and are extremely accessible. You can call at anytime to speak to your doctor for advice, at no extra charge. They are also really big on relationship building so you will see the same staff members each time - you get to know them and they get to know you, your kids and their histories which is also super important to me. Everyone is friendly, the office runs on time, it's clean and well lit and they have a nice little play section for younger kids in the waiting room. They're everything I have looked for in a practice and I'm so glad we found them! read more
