They were well paid for this service, and well aware of the difficulties of this particular project when they took it on. In the contract I agreed to every suggestion they'd made that would make the apartment desirable and easy to rent. It was a disaster. They failed to manage their contractor and it took them a year, with some work still undone now, in March 2025. They missed the September 1st rental target (when the propoderance of Cambridge leases renew). As a result, I had to reduce the rent they inititally proposed by 23%, and it did not rent until March 2025. This was especially painful since I had based the financing of the large project on their written estimate of rental income, which I then provided to the bank (with Skylines knowledge). Their response to missing this important leasing deadline was "You'll make it up later" But they offered no consideration for the damage during construction, including lost items and damaged art and antiques. It's "pay me" not matter what. A one way street. Alex, the owner, is a strict constructionist if the contract favors him. If not, he'll just make things up, and get nasty. Issam, Exec VP, is wont to say "as we discussed" when I have no memory of any such. Alex and Issam have a "good cop - bad cop" routine going, and I deeply regret having hired them. I advise being very cautious if you decide to engage.

We met to talk about what I was looking for when I decided I was in the market for a condo. I had my ideas of where I wanted to live and how much I wanted to spend. He gave a very detailed overview of the process, what was needed and what to expect with the current market. He was actually so good, that in our first meeting he pulled up a listing he knew about and showed it to me, and talked about how it would be perfect for me and that it was just rented out. Fast forward three months later after not finding condos in Medford, Somerville, and Cambridge we revisited that first listing he told me about and it was perfect for me... and I'm now comfortably living there. Joe was really good about getting me in touch with the house inspector, contacting the condo association, and recommending an attorney that was also really good and responsive. His whole team was great and on their game when it came to making a move. I remember specifically one time I went to an open house and really liked the property and he was able to get a lot of info immediately and within minutes of me asking him for more info, we were on the phone discussing an offer. That property fell through, but in a competitive market it's great to be able to get in touch with someone and get prompt responses. All the documents are electronic and so signing things are great and easy to do in the business day, no taking time off work to run to an office and sign things. She was also honest about an imperfect part of the apartment. We were not in Boston at the time (had a friend see it eventually) and the fact that she communicated about this, in fact, taking initiative on it, helped us build trust. Furthermore, the place is a very good deal and there wasn't even a broker's fee -- the owner paid it -- and no security deposit (just first and second month's rent). For Boston, it's pretty unusual. Sveta also worked hard past the usual business day to get our application in on time. Sometimes I even felt she was ahead of me. While it got mildly annoying once :) I am very glad she egged me on, as we quite literally got our application in minutes before someone else did, and this helped us get the apartment. Finally, it was a pleasure working with a fellow Russian-American, who happens to be the best of both worlds: we felt like she worked closely with us and "adopted us," in a communal, close-knit Russian way, but, in an American manner, she stayed upbeat and optimistic about the process :) BLR gets excellent reviews, and I am glad I trusted them and Sveta. While sitting in their office along with my real estate agent (who isn't affiliated with Ford), and…read morespeaking with one of their agents, I signed a an application and gave them a deposit for an apartment they were listing (effectively taking it off the market). I was told by one of their agents, that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my application and that the apartment was mine. Approximately three days later I found out through my realtor that somehow Ford had leased the apartment to someone else after I had already put down money and took the place off the market. Confused, I spoke with a Ford agent, who told me that someone had put down a deposit at the exact time as me. I immediately knew this was a complete lie, as I was sitting in their office alone, when I submitted my check and application. When confronted with this fact, the agent simply shrugged, and then told me well they offered to move in 15 days earlier. I was never informed this was an option, so I immediately countered with, well I can do that as well. They replied with, "no, we already signed the lease." I then found out that the new tenant was their client, hence they got full commission. With me, since I used another realtor, they would have had to split the commission with my agent. This situation left a bad taste in my mouth, as I have never experienced such shady business for a company that pretends to be "high end." As a working professional who has been renting in the Boston area for nearly a decade, I was appalled.

I have a problem with the fact that our realtor didn't shoot straight with us and I think took advantage of our ignorance of local custom and laws. Told us the place was great, landlord attentive (spoiler alert: Was. Not.) And when we asked about parking, "Sure! There's parking a-plenty, all the on-street parking* one might want!" Except, Parking* in Brookline = only during the day; parking is illegal at night meaning if you don't have a driveway you have to rent space in a private lot for ~$200/mo. The decent thing to do would not have been to just flat gull us on that one fine point. We would have looked elsewhere if we knew how coo-coo bird-brain awful the parking situation in Brookline is. You're pretty much stuck with a realtor if you want to get anything nailed down for rentals in Boston, and these guys I guess seem to be in charge of the crummier places in Brookline. I'm sure there are probably worse out there. But be warned: They work for shady people, and they themselves aren't high in the running for most-decent-folks-of-the-year.

They email me their snow plowing plans with updates as the snow predictions change. They arrive at all hours of the night and early morning. They call ahead to give us advance notice that we and our tenants will need to move our cars in 20 minutes. They arrive as promised and always do A TOTALLY AWESOME and THROUGH PLOWING and SHOVELING JOB. They return during the snow storm and are as diligent with email notifications for they return plowing / shoveling visits through-out the duration of each storm. THESE GUYS ARE ON TOP OF THEIR GAME. I COMMEND THEM and GIVE THEM HIGH MARKS for doing what no other plowing guys or company could achieve in 35 years of my hunting. Oops ... almost lost the thread. They are great Realtors. My first showing, my roommate was not available to view, so he showed it twice to us. That really left me feeling good about the broker. I was very very clear that we were looking for a LONG TERM situation and don't want to move in to a place if a landlord has intentions to sell. He assured me that the property we wanted to rent was going to be under the landlord's ownership and that the tenancy-at-will situation was only because the landlord "didn't like paperwork" and disliked all of the stipulations of generic leases. After we put in the application, that's when things went down south quick. The broker was unresponsive to phone calls, couldn't confirm times, and would reply via text to important questions. The day of the lease signing, Chris showed up over 2 hours late after TEXTING me when I specifically requested phone calls. This left a bad taste in my mouth and he did nothing to apologize to me. I was also surprised because on top of the tenancy-at-will agreement was a 38 point addendum drafted by the landlord. I was confused because I was under the impression that the landlord hated paperwork and legalese. This made me HIGHLY skeptical, so I refused to sign it. Later on, after mulling over the lease, we pulled out of him that the landlord did have intentions to sell by the summer time (about a 6 month time period). I am not sure if this kind of thing is typical of brokers looking to make a buck during a down market, but man...I really would have been screwed in 6 months had I signed this thing.
