When we had 3 more children, we continued to enroll them. My eldest daughter started with both subjects. As she got older and her school work became more demanding, she struggled and made the difficult decision to stop math and continue with reading. She completed the Kumon reading program by 6th grade and reinstated with Kumon math. On countless times, she stated how she missed the advantages she had in math in comparison to her classmates when she was doing her Kumon math. My youngest enrolled in Kumon reading at 4 and in less than 4 months, he was enunciating and reading comfortable with picture books. I know many teachers who are excellent in what they do and others who not only do their their work but inspire and motivate students to go above and beyond. My son did both Math and Reading when he was younger, and it helped him to get ahead and be placed in the gifted track in school. Then we came back to this location in the summer before 8th grade because his reading scores had gone down during the pandemic lockdown and hadn't really recovered. We wanted him to improve his reading skills in preparation for his high school placement assessment in the fall of his 8th grade year. After only six months of Eye Level Reading, his MAP score and high school assessment scores were back up to the high 90s, and the highest since before the pandemic lockdown, and he secured his placement in the Enriched Honors courses for high school. What's great about Eye Level is that it assesses your children's strengths and weaknesses and only focuses on the areas they need support. My older kids have done Kumon before, and that program only works with repetition, which is not the best way to learn for a higher-achieving child, in my experience. Once your child masters a skill, they move on, instead of forcing him to do ten additional packets of the same thing. What's great about the Northbrook Eye Level is that they send automated reminder notices the day before each class, which is very welcome for a busy household, and they are incredibly accommodating and responsive when we've had to reschedule classes due to my son's activities. My son liked his instructors and learned a lot from them. I'm very grateful to this center for helping my son get his Reading scores back up to where they should be -- and for giving him the skills, strategies and confidence to be able to take the standardized tests in school.

But after four years at the school, I can confidently say that I am amazed by how effective this method is and how well it supports my child's individual growth. Our child is now in kindergarten, and one of the things that continues to impress me is the sophistication of the curriculum. Every day, he brings home work that I would have been doing in second or third grade--adding and subtracting fractions, solving word problems, and even working with four-digit multiplication. The school's approach really allows children to progress (and f accelerate) at their own pace. It's incredible to see how engaged and excited he is about learning. Even more importantly, he is thrilled to go to school each morning. Knowing that he wakes up eager to learn and be part of his classroom community speaks volumes about the environment Chiaravalle has created. Another standout aspect of Chiaravalle is the extraordinary educators. My son transferred to Chiaravalle during the fifth grade because his learning style wasn't…read morewell-suited for public school. His math scores were lagging and didn't improve despite trying things like teacher conferences and outside tutoring. After visiting Chiaravalle, my son was immediately attracted to the welcoming community and the modern Montessori learning approach, where students are allowed, encouraged, and trained to take responsibility for their own learning and community. He still doesn't love math (Chiaravalle can't perform miracles!) but he's back on track with what he needs to know and has much more confidence about his math aptitude. He's also learning tons of other great stuff--not just academics but also leadership skills (and the resilience needed to be a good leader) as well as executive functioning skills like how to keep up with his assignments and plan his own work schedule. He's in seventh grade now and in middle school they are doing such a great job getting him ready for ETHS. He's a social, outgoing person and we were not sure how he would do with the smaller class sizes. This turned out to be no problem, especially because students of different grades work together. He's friends with students who are a year older and a year younger than he is, in a way that I think would not be the case in public school. Overall, Sending him to Chiaravalle significantly and positively changed the trajectory of his education and development.

An update after my son has attended the Skokie Mathnasium location for last 2 years. He went from…read morea struggling math student in the lower level of his class, with MAP test scores in the 40th percentile, to near the top of his class with test scores above 85th percentile. He now does his math homework on his own without tears or ripping up of papers, and is a lot more confident in general in his academic abilities.
