I finally managed to get off the train here to have a look around. Okay, it's not as if I couldn't…read morehave before, but Chatswood has always fascinated me - the suburb that is, not the railway station. The reason being is that it is a suburb but it has really tall buildings. Well, that isn't all that uncommon these days, but back when I was a teenager (or at least in my early twenties) it was. It sort of made Sydney to feel like a real city. As for the station, well it's pretty cool, and quite large as well, and the trains come by quite regularly as well.

Over the course of 30 years I've watched it go from a…read moresmall, haphazard concrete craphole to mature and urbane transport hub, efficacious and surrounded by a retail megalopolis that has sprung up around. There are gyms, bars, cafes, and more shops and restaurants than you can throw a tourist at. The gateway to the north-west, Chatty station is still one of my favourite train stations in Sydders (in your face, Wynyard!)

Wollstonecraft is one of the oldest stations in Sydney or so people have told me and I have decided…read moreto take that as fact. It's very old school. The track isn't your normal straight track, no sir this track bends around in a loop so those MIND THE GAP are extra appropriate here because at some points you need to actually do a little jump to reach the platform. The Platform is simple and a reminder of a quieter time. The station doesn't have a lot here besides a little cafe and two little shops on either side of the platform. The station staff are very friendly here and they seem to have been working here a long time because they know all the locals. The only drawback of this station is that due to the loop in the tracks when the trains come by they really screech so be prepared for that.

Why Gordon? It should be renamed Boredom! I wasted many hours here as a teenage punk forced to wait for a bus to take me home to West Pymble, and quite frankly the area in and around the station remains the same eyesore today that it did back then.

This is a fairly busy station on the Northern Line. During the peak morning hours, there is a fast…read moretrain to Central but it is pretty full by the time it gets to West Ryde having come from Newcastle. Entry points to the station are from Ryedale Road and West Parade. There are two ticket machines, one is exclusively for EFTPOS transactions. They've recently installed a CBA ATM near the top of the stairs coming in from Ryedale Road. There are lifts on all platforms, and two toilets near the ticket counters. There are plenty of benches along the platforms, especially on the platform going to the city. There are food and drink vending machines on both platforms if you're feeling peckish while waiting for your train. A large section of the platforms is covered to protect you from rain when the weather's sour. The station is well lighted at night so you don't feel afraid for your life when catching public transport in odd hours. There's a coffee shop on the upstairs bridge open on weekdays for a quick brekky fix before catching the train. There are bus stops right outside the station with buses going to the city via Ryde, Parramatta and Chatswood. There's plenty of public parking on Ryedale Road for those coming to the station by car. You can also leave your bicycles at both the Ryedale Road or West Parade side but I would advise against it especially if your bike is expensive. I once saw a lonely bike frame chained to the fence near the carpark in Ryedale Road and it was missing its other parts which i suspect were taken off and stolen.

On my recent trip out to Sydney to run the marathon, I stayed near the airport. Whenever I needed…read moreto go anywhere, I walked over to this railway station to catch the T8 train towards the City Circle. It was a very convenient station as there were many nearby restaurant options as well as a Woolworths. Then again, in the grand scheme of things, particularly when it comes to railway stations, it probably is new. Anyway, this is the station that you DON'T get off at if you want to go to the airport. The reason I mention this is that apparently a lot of people do, and then get really confused when they can't find the airport. It's an okay station otherwise, though they should have a big 'NOT THE AIRPORT' scrawled all over it (though they used to call it Suburban).

I'm cheering on Monday's because it means I am in less of a rush to get to my gym class, and another worthless station gets skipped :) That's our Pymbie, gateway to the worst pub on the North Shore, and an easy stop to skip. Pymbie's weird like that. It kinda plonks you in the middle of nowhere. As someone that grew up in West Pymble I can attest to almost never using this train station in my youth, which seems absurd since my high school was in Waitara. However, the station was so far away that it was really only accessible by bus and anyone that knows Pymble avenue will tell ya that there ain't no bus on this planet gonna get up that hill... so the buses dumped ya at Gordon Station instead. Pymble train station only became a necessary station for me when I took on a job at the golf club behind PLC for 6 years. Even then it was a good 15 minute walk from the station to work (and I was coming via the city because I was studying computer programming at the time). Much like the pub of the same name, this station just ain't my scene!
