After 10 years, you might wonder why the negative review. Yes, Dr. Spier is technically a good vet,…read morethat's why I went to him for 10 plus years. But, he is also extremely mercenary, the most money grubbing vet I think I have ever visited. The straw that broke the camel's back was today. We went to Dr. Spier's to pick up $161 worth of medicine. While there, I saw Dr. Spier sitting in the back (it was a quiet day with no clients, probably due to the previous night's snow storm). I made an offhand comment about my little baby Leonard and asked him if he thought a crouching problem (a problem which I paid him to look at before Christmas, but hadn't determined a cause at that time) might be due to a luxating patella. He said, well we can check it real quick if you'd like. I hesitated and said, well, will it hurt Leonard? The vet said, no not at all, would you like to have it checked, Dr. In Training (sorry don't know her name) can do it. I said, well ok I guess. Dr. Spier said well go in the exam room. The Dr. In Training spent all of 2 minutes (if that) and said there were no problems with Leonard's patella. So, then we went to pay the bill (for the worm check for Leonard we thought - we had already paid $161 in medicine) and found out he was charging us for a full exam too! I was shocked, after 10 years, I sincerely thought this was merely a courtesy check, especially since Dr. Spier never even looked at Leonard! How could he charge me a full exam rate when he did not perform a full exam? My husband went ballistic in the office, but we paid the bill and left. Several months earlier, we had brought in our cat Leonardo for vaccinations and teeth cleaning and Leonard in for an exam regarding a scratch he had on his hind quarters (Leonard was not treated for the scratch). This cost us $500!! And, no teeth were extracted!! What was the $500 for? You'll never know with Dr. Spier because HE NEVER GIVES A RECEIPT!! Can you believe a vet that doesn't provide receipts? Well, just go to Dr. Spier and you will see for yourself. There was also a very painful incident with Dr. Spier several years ago with my son Neelix. Neelix was very ill, and the Dr. knew this. Neelix was my son and the Dr. knew this too. When it was time to make that final awful decision, I was holding Neelix in my arms in the vehicle and I just wanted the Dr. to come out to the car so that I wouldn't have to move poor Neelix. The doctor refused. That really should have been it for me, but like I said, I have found Dr. Spier to be extremely capable and knowledgeable and so I returned. There must be other capable and knowledgeable vets in our area and now my quest is to find them. Because, at least for me, I am finished being screwed by Dr. Spier.

Dr. Spier, Fulton Animal Hospital - do not recommend. Dr. Spier had two of my dogs under his care…read more Both large mixed breeds. Both were under his care since they were puppies. My senior dog last saw him at 10 years old. Not once did Dr. Spier ever recommend any diagnostics for him. A visit consisted of vaccination, weight check and heart worm check. We were handed a bill that didn't explain the break down of costs, only the total. Not one CBC/urinalysis was every recommended or run. My younger dog was medicated at three years old for aggression towards a child. He had 36 pounds of weight gain over a four year span that went unaddressed/undiscussed (scale is in the back at Fulton Animal Hospital so as a consumer we did not know at the time the extent of the weight gain). He diagnosed him with diabetes, failed to recommend/run any diagnostics (including urinalysis) and then vaccinated him with a series of seven vaccinations without ever discussing with us the risks of vaccinating a sick dog. Because he failed to properly disclose the risks, we didn't have the opportunity to make an informed decision as to what was in the best interest of our dog. Two days later he kept him over night, started him (at 97 pounds) on 35u of humulin N insulin (when his bg was 263 after eating), increased it to 40u the next day, dropped his blood glucose to LO (under 20) with one shot of 40u of insulin and told us to give him 40u BID (twice daily). He sent him home one hour after the LO reading, didn't disclose the hypoglycemia, and failed to note on his records that the LO reading was ever treated to make sure his blood glucose was in a safe range before he was sent home. A week later we called in his blood glucose readings, in which we skipped around seven shots due low readings we were seeing. We have those numbers but there is nothing in his records that show what they are. We were told to take him off insulin, that he may be in honeymoon. We went from 80u of insulin daily to zero. With NO follow up information. Four weeks went by before we found a new vet. Not once did he call to see how a dog who went from 80u insulin to zero was doing. Not once did he seem to recognize that his prescribed dosing recommendation contributed to the overdosing we were seeing. No once did he recommend we bring the dog back for further evaluation. He simply said to go from 80u to zero. Long story short...this same dog ended up having extremely high fasting cholesterol and triglyceride values. He ended up having pancreatitis. He ended up being hypothyroid. He ended up losing his vision to cataracts and was so weak and lethargic that he would fall forward many times a day. He ended up with a cervical spinal lesion which slowly robbed his mobility in all four legs. A lesion which required high doses of twice daily pred to help him walk. At nine years young our boy collapsed at home and was gone before we could get him to our vehicle for help. And why? His records show 36 pounds of weight gain. They show him being medicated for aggressive behavior. Right there, at three years old, he should have had blood work and a thyroid panel run. But Dr. Spier chose to put him on a hormonal drug and never offered a medical cause as an explanation for the aggressive behavior. At eight years old he diagnosed him diabetic and still failed to run any blood work/urinalysis. He never mentioned them as options, as had we understood what they were and why they would have been necessary, we would have approved them. What we learned: A little bit about hypothyroidism...it doesn't just happen. It's a progressive disease. Two of the earliest signs are unexplained weight gain and sudden aggression towards a child. Most hypothyroid dogs have repeat infections and/or loss of fur, but not all do. Our boy have a full thick coat. Many hypothyroid dogs are extremely lethargic. Our boy was nervous and reactive. Despite his weight he was fast and quite agile. But his behavior worsened over the years. Hypothyroid dogs can't clear lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides from their systems. Dogs with high lipids are prone to pancreatitis, and for some dogs that pancreatitis can be subclinical. It was for our boy. Dogs who suffer repeated bouts of pancreatitis can have their pancreas scared to the point it no longer produces insulin. A dog who doesn't have insulin production on it's own is diagnosed as diabetic. Once he was transferred to the new vet, and someone took the time to educate us, he had five blood panels run in a 12 month window. Had Dr. Spier looked at his health history as a whole, had he taken the time to provide the care and guidance we'd expected, had he not been negligent in the treatment of the diabetes, our boy likely would still be here today.

Great Veteran Hospital…read more Friendly, helpful and caring staff. All wonderful from the receptionist to the Vets and everyone in between. We've been going to Stack's ever since we moved into the area and could not be happier with the quality of sincere care from day one. Yes, a total Friends and Family recommendations.

Then he developed a severe limp and they put him on gabapentin, again we called and repeatedly brought him in for exams and consistently called about him having a problem with the drug not helping him. At this point I insisted on xrays and ultrasound be done, they had us do bloodwork and told us if we paid an extra $89 for an official pancreatitis test that would be definitive diagnosis that would give us the result that we needed. They could not perform an ultrasound so we had to take him to the emergency vet on Bridge Street in a Syracuse. Come to find out our dog did not have pancreatitis as the vet said the blood test revealed but had full pledge lymphoma, (his neck and jaw presented with hard nodules by the ex vet) and we had to put him down. The emergency vet said the blood test that Stacks office gave us for pancreatitis was not a definitive test for that. So which is it? So disgusted with the lack of concern given toward our dog. It wasn't until i insisted on testing because I was concerned of cancer that a closer look was finally given by the Stack Vet. Extremely upset that we had to put our dog down. Think twice about going there. They gouge you for pricing and never addressed his health until i threatened legal action.

It was discovered that my 12 year old cat Pippin had a belly full of cancer. They did everything they could to prop him up to try to give me a few more days with him. When it came time to say good bye, as difficult as the entire process was, they treated it as a very solemn occasion, ushering us into a room as soon as we entered the door. They're on point when it comes to wellness as well. Staff are knowledgeable (I was there and heard one on the phone with an owner whose dog went into heat for the 1st time and needed to be talked off the ledge) and compassionate. I don't expect to be a pet owner for a number of years, but thank you, Dr. Alina, for being SO kind and gracious to Pippin as well as myself. I'm happy for you that you're moving on. This practice, very fortunately, has other amazing vets but you WILL be missed.
