Ship Inn - My amazing fish & chip. Half order, btw

The Fisherman Pie, which was Haddock, Smoked Haddock and Salmon in a Creamy Leek & Chive Sauce, topped with Mash Potato and Isle of mull Cheddar, was delicious. Even the Seasonal Vegetables, which were served with the pie was really good. On top of that, they had a nice long list of ciders to select from and they had the Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime, which is one of my favorites.

On entering it is a spacious and cosy looking bar that is definitely suited for tourists with a collection of beer mats almost being used as wallpaper to cover most of the free space behind the bar, some of which I had never even heard of! The decor and feel to the sitting area itself is traditional with a modern fusion, little tweaks like old spirit bottles (JD mainly) being used as candle holders are excellent to the vibe of the place and really let you settle happily in to one of the booths and take the surroundings in. We went in here because my better half was feeling hungry (I was saving myself for the North Berwick Fry which is just next door to the Ship Inn, in hindsight I should have eaten here) and decided to pop in here for a drink & a bit of lunch/dinner, we definitely weren't disappointed. A chicken and bacon burger was ordered and a chicken and bacon burger it was. Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. It was MASSIVE, in all it's chickeny beauty I found it hard to resist taking a huge bite out of the burger. Long stoy short, I ended up taking a huge bite out of the burger. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.

The Lemon & Herb Baked Fish was so flavorful and juicy. I tried a Deep Fried Mars Bar for the first time and loved it (I don't know what it reminds me of, but it's crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and hot enough to burn the top of your mouth). The star was definitely the Breaded Haddock. I've had fish and chips around the UK for much cheaper, but at a slightly higher price point you get a perfectly crispy piece of fish with double-fried chips. It's really more about the experience of being in a posh fish shop. It's packed with tourists, so you'll be handed a map of the city at the end -- which I found to be pretty funny given I was living in Edinburgh at the time and came with another local. But it's charming and certainly worth a visit.

It was super busy and full, but we were seated at a table in the corner rather quickly, and since we already knew what we wanted (vegan fish and chips for me, a veggie burger for my son), we ordered, and the food came relatively quickly. My son liked his burger, but the fish and chips? A total disappointment. The "fish" was clearly a premade option from the store, and it was so dense and hard that I could barely finish it. The chips were fine but no flavor so I needed to add salt. The plus was the vegan tartar, which tasted quite good. And of course, I added vinegar. But I was bummed that the ketchup and mayo was in little Heinz packets instead of bottles. This is so unnecessarily wasteful and also kind of a pain to constantly be opening and squeezing them. Our service was friendly and quick, so that's great, but everything else was pretty meh, and to be honest, I don't think I'd come back here.

The place has very limited seating inside, they have a large picnic table and few tables out by the street, but the place does get busy. Most of the folks coming here were getting their orders to go. WARNING, they only have one register, you order first and if you are dining in, they will bring you the food. What the cashier won't ask you, is if you need tartar sauce, etc, it's assumed you know how to order. On top of that, the young lady working the registered looked beyond flustered and overwhelmed working. We waited about 5 minutes before we ordered (everything is a la carte, so if you forget to order something, you need to get back in line and order them). We got the following: - Battered Haddock with chips special (comes with a drink) x 2 - Calamari - Onion Rings - Chicken tender salad We got our food, then realized we had to order the tartar sauce, etc. So go back in line, by this time I had to wait 10 minutes to get: - Tartar sauce x 3 - Ketchup (yes they charge you for ketchup) - side order of curry The haddock - first time experiencing fish & chips in Scotland, I walked away from here very disappointed. The fish is NOT seasoned, very bland and the batter fell off the fish. It seemed like there was no binding agent between the fish and the wet batter. The onion ring was too greasy and calamari was decent. The saving grace was the gravy, definitely get the gravy to dip your chips in. Why two stars? - staffing - the cashier could have asked if this was our first time or not... and if it was, then explain that everything is a la carte. Don't assume that folks coming here knows how to order and force them to get back in line to get the condiments. tables - tables with eaten plates everywhere. It seems they foregone the cleaning the tables to take orders and get the lines moving. I think we would walked away with a lot better experience if things were explained to us. Was it worth spending 90 pounds with tip? No.
