Located on the Lake Michigan coastline just south of the Racine Zoo, the Oasis is, as its name implies, a sandy sanctuary from the real world. Some days I visit with a big bucket of sand toys for the kids in tow, other times- like this afternoon- I stop by solo for a quick break from the daily grind. Paul Curtin and his friendly staff operate a gem of a business. Refreshments are plentiful- both for adults and children- and the price can't be beat. Have a burger while listening to great bands (check the website for the daily lineup) or split a pitcher (or three) of beer with friends. Also consider this place for parties- my son just had his 6th here last week and it went off without a hitch. Simply put, this is one of the best things about Racine. You'll find me here all summer!

When I was in town, my sister and I walked the beach searching for beach glass. Not only was it relaxing, we met several friendly people enjoying the last moments of summer. Always clean and cared for, Simmons Island is a destination for locals and visitors alike. They have built a great little play area for kids and have recently added extra parking. I love Kenosha's lakefront and only wish I had appreciated it more as a kid growing up here. Now that I live in Chicago, we share the same Great Lake. But Kenosha's beach and park are so much more accessible. I visit Simmons Island every time I'm in Kenosha no matter the season.

If we would have fallen in the water I would have been so upset so we only did one lap and then I let him play some water fetch. I do love the expanse of trails however and it looks like they have a beer garden set up as well. I'll come back just not for the water portion here

It is absolutely enormous, there are multiple tennis courts, picnic areas, bridges (hence the alternate name "7 Bridges", trails, and much more. I remember first learning about this park while I was still in high school and running cross country races. This was our 4 race of the year, and the first where our race times dramatically dropped every season. Naturally, I grew very fond of this place.
