What a clever idea and a great way to promote books from new authors. They carry cards from local artists with beautiful nature photography or drawn images. In addition to books, there are puzzles, coloring books and colored pencils, PNW stickers, coasters with funny sayings, even calendars. I didn't realize that people still use the printEd version! Staff is friendly and helpful. All Covid protocols are followed, which I appreciate. Since it's a small store only 9 customers are allowed in at a time which isn't an issue. At the cash register there are delicious local chocolates and treats for that spontaneous purchase to go with your new read!

This cozy little bookstore is right on E 2nd in The Dalles and is a throwback to the friendly, neighborhood shops of yesteryear. The bookcases date back to when the shop opened, adding to the charm and warmth. Books of all categories (fiction, mystery, cookbooks map, gardening, thrillers, travel, brewing, baking, sci-fi, classics, children's) with new releases and even some out of print items represented. So fun to peruse through the various titles as time disappears and I get lost in the magic of printed words and stories. In addition to the varied book collection, the shop has some beautiful puzzles, gorgeous journals, pens, unique stationary, lovely cards, gifts and some toys for children. The staff is passionate about books and it's evident. The gentleman working there the day that I stopped in was so friendly and helpful, offering suggestions on books after I told him my preferences for a summer read on a lazy day. The place is obviously massive, but surprisingly well organized and mapped; there are lots of signs making it easy to find what you are looking for. Easily our favorite was the gold room which contained mystery, horror, comics and manga, as well as romance. There are computers around where you can search for specific titles, and staff is helpful with recommendations as well. In terms of the pricing, there are excellent used books. I got a copy that I would have sworn was brand new for $10 off the listed price.

An emporium of both new and used books (always make sure you check the price sticker on the back before purchasing in case you really need a new version of a book), there is a little bit of everything here. In addition to books, this is a great stop for souvenirs including pins, local snacks, lines, and mugs. If you're short on time, you can kill two birds with one stone here at Powell's. If you're not short on time, seek out a pass for the Rare Book Room and scope out the treasures on display there. Vintage Books has been a haunt of mine for decades. Prices were always excellent, the selection surprisingly robust, and the staff friendly and helpful, if a bit timid. Happily, not much has changed in the last thirty years, and this is one of the few instances where I would say that is absolutely a good thing. In the age of Amazon, eReaders, audiobooks, and every other conceivable method of circumventing the written (and more importantly, *printed*) word, it's almost shocking that little backend bookstores like this are able to survive...but I am thankful that they have.
