I can't imagine a better Normandy tour experience than with Olivier from Normandy 44. Olivier is obviously passionate about WWII, and about the role of the Allies in liberating France and defeating the Nazis. (Olivier's own father fought with the Free French against the Nazis.) He is extremely knowledgeable about the events of D-Day, and the broader military and political setting in which it took place. He can point out the minute details and exact location of some pretty extraordinary events of June 6, 1944. And he does it all with a great sensitivity and good humor that make it pleasant to spend a day focusing on some inherently dark events of the lives of those involved. My family and I (including three kids) came away enlightened, uplifted, and inspired. Two other points worth making: (1) Oliver's idiomatic American English is excellent. He lived and worked in the U.S. for several years, and he worked for U.S. companies before and after that. There is zero language barrier. (2) Olivier co-founded a larger tour company in Normandy a number of year ago before launching his current tour company, working for himself. The BEST tour!!! I can't imagine anyone else doing it better than Olivier at Normandy44-Tours does it. 100% book him! We did a full day tour where we were picked up at our hotel and shuttled to all the D-Day sites in the area and dropped off again at our hotel in the evening. Olivier's history knowledge of D-Day and WWII is astounding. He takes you to places that the big bus tours will never go to, he talks about the history of each place, and then allows you some time to explore it on your own. Oliver is a one man show who caters mostly to American tourists ( he's lived and worked at Disney World). He's very friendly, knowledgeable about the war and the local area, and his time is your time, meaning he's very flexible. It was pouring rain our first day at the beaches, but we improvised and grabbed sandwiches and ate and talked about the landings inside one of the German bunkers until the rain subsided and we moved on to the American Cemetery. We enjoyed all our time with him, but especially the "off the beaten track" places and the amazing stories of bravery and sacrifice. There are NO GROUP TOURS in Normandy in November. So prices go way up for private tours and you just have to hope and pray for a good one. We planned for 2 months A few popular tour companies fell through, other private tour guides either hadn't responded or were already booked so despite our efforts we still had NO tour the day we arrived in Normandy! I was panicked and stranded. A miracle- I got a call from Magali at Normandy 44 Tours at 6pm the night before the one day we planned for our tour. Saved! I had never heard of this company and so I kept my fingers crossed... But Magali blew us away- She was incredible! She was on time for early morning pick up, very pleasant and kind and spoke English very well. But what was most impressive was her breadth of knowledge of history and D-day both facts as well as, fun not-so-well-known stories. She had a wonderful thick binder stuffed full of maps, pictures, diagrams, articles. She walked us through every major aspect of D-Day while also carefully constructing the tour to have the personal special moments my Husband was passionate about seeing. Her timing was impeccable- she moved through each site efficiently with out us feeling rushed. She gave us alone time for sentimental moments that were important for the experience. Normandy was only one of over 25 stops on our Honeymoon Round the World Tour however of all the tours we took and guides we had around the entire world, Magali was hands down THE BEST! We kept wishing while in Rome, Australia, Cambodia, or Beijing "where can we find a Magali?!' My husband and I shared a minivan tour of the American beaches with 6 other tourists. Olivier was our guide, and we couldn't have asked for a more informative, attentive, and personable guide. He came prepared with visuals (maps, photos, etc.) and an extensive knowledge of the major events of the Normandy Invasion as well as a multitude of details and stories. Olivier is a natural teacher, interacting with and including each person in the group during his presentations. He is humorous and caring. Each stop we made, Olivier gave us information and then gave us time to look around and ponder the events that took place 71 years ago. In my email correspondence with Olivier's wife, before our trip to Normandy, I mentioned that my uncle, a paratrooper in the 101 Airborne Division took part in Operation Overlord. Olivier took it upon himself to research where my uncle's group was dropped in the early hours of June 6 and what their assignment was. He included a great deal more information and some sites that we had not anticipated. Olivier far exceeded our expectations as a guide! I never expected such personal attention on a group tour. Olivier was absolutely fantastic. As someone that loves World War Two History, this tour far exceeded my high expectations. You get to see the Day from the perspective of the Germans as well as allies. You also get to visit the American Cemetery which is a very important place to visit. Olivier knows everything about the battle and relays the information in a fascinating way - I learned a lot of stories I didn't have any clue about before the day started. Olivier also has a great sense of humor - my girlfriend and I both thoroughly enjoyed our time with him and the rest of the group.
