Oliver and Normandy 44 Tours gave our family (2 adults, 1 pre-teen) an amazing day of sightseeing…read moreand touring. Oliver's knowledge goes beyond just taking you to the big sites and telling you a few things. Oliver's knowledge is truly deep, giving you insights that you will never get from a book or internet search. Some of the history of Normandy and D-Day is passed down by word of mouth and the stories that those who were there told their children and grandchildren. Oliver knows these stories and so much more. Oliver's english is better than some Americans. Oliver was able to connect with each of us on our tour, gave us time to walk around and experience various sites and museums as well as left us with memories we will carry with us forever.

I can't imagine a better Normandy tour experience than with Olivier from Normandy 44. Olivier is…read moreobviously passionate about WWII, and about the role of the Allies in liberating France and defeating the Nazis. (Olivier's own father fought with the Free French against the Nazis.) He is extremely knowledgeable about the events of D-Day, and the broader military and political setting in which it took place. He can point out the minute details and exact location of some pretty extraordinary events of June 6, 1944. And he does it all with a great sensitivity and good humor that make it pleasant to spend a day focusing on some inherently dark events of the lives of those involved. My family and I (including three kids) came away enlightened, uplifted, and inspired. Two other points worth making: (1) Oliver's idiomatic American English is excellent. He lived and worked in the U.S. for several years, and he worked for U.S. companies before and after that. There is zero language barrier. (2) Olivier co-founded a larger tour company in Normandy a number of year ago before launching his current tour company, working for himself. He is greeted warmly by the other guides you'll see along the route, many of whom he trained.

While my knowledge of the D-Day Landings is quite limited, my husband is just the opposite and has studied this history extensively. Yet, both of us were highly impressed with Francois, answering our questions easily and providing insights and an understanding not only of the invasion, but of the local life and people who lived through it all. He is incredibly engaging, and we loved hearing how his family fared while half of their home was taken over by German soldiers. Spending the day in Normandy is an emotional and moving experience, enhanced greatly by Francois and his deep knowledge of history.

He interviews the remaining people that were alive at the time and is able to interject their experiences with his dialogue of the beaches, bunkers and cemeteries. We were constantly in awe of his expertise and ability to roll with the changes that occured unexpectedly with our time frame. When a train strike interfered with our ability to get to Mont St Michel he generously offered to drive us there and change our itinerary in order to see Mont St Michel on the second afternoon which was planned otherwise. The trip would have not been complete if not for his empathy and extra effort. His knowledge added to everything we saw and did and the price was surprisingly affordable and certainly well worth it! I am not a tour person but I cannot emphasize enough how much of a difference it made to our visit to have this man on our side.
