In January 2024, my daughter had a medical emergency and was apparently transported using this company's services from one hospital to another. I say apparently, because they didn't bother to send billing to my insurance provider for over 17 months and I only just now received a bill from them in July 2025, well beyond the reasonable timeframe to submit claims for reimbursement with my old insurance provider. Not only that, but they threatened almost immediately to send me to collections no less than 2 weeks after the first invoice was received. Should my family ever need emergency assistance and I see one of your trucks pull up to where we're at, I'll be sure we refuse transport to ensure you never see another dime from me or my family ever again. read more

NEVER, EVER CALL THIS COMPANY. I collapsed from heatstroke in a neighbor's backyard. The neighbor didn't know what was wrong with me and called these scumbags. I am a 70 YO woman with thinning bones, and a total reverse shoulder replacement, but a 200 lb. thug decided he needed to sit on my chest although I was already in arm and leg restraints and despite the fact that I offered no resistance. I screamed for him to get off me, that he was going to dislocate my shoulder implant. The woman who called these idiots came out and asked what he was doing so he got off me, but continued to crack me across the shins with a wooden rod anytime I asked where they were taking me. They drove me around for two hours, with this piece of human trash assaulting me the entire time, then dumped me off at a mental institution. The other kid in the back who never touched me actually said "Man, I think we seriously f__cked up on this one." Yes, you most certainly did. For the record, when the hospital finally checked me out physically, my oxygen was significantly below 90 and my electrolytes were messed up, so they had zero medical knowledge and acted like they were cavemen, Also, there was absolutely no medical equipment in the hollowed out van they shoved me into. I won't even go into the $$$ bill they sent me, my insurance told them to back off, that I already met my out-of-pocket deductible. read more

This is a questionable business which may be making money on poor--maybe even fraudulent billing practices. My husband was transported twice from Marin Health to a care facility following strokes. The transport techs were good the first time, but rather than take a full-size picture of the transport orders, they took the picture sideways so that it wasn't readable. Their billing department sent it to Medicare that way and Medicare rejected it. NorCal billed me and told me I had to pay the invoice or they would send me to collections. They said they could do nothing more with Medicare. I had to go through 2 rounds of correspondence with Medicare before Medicare paid NorCal. NorCal just sent a refund check made out to me (supposedly) with an incorrectly spelled first name and the wrong last name instead of issuing it to the trust bank account from which the first check was issued. Now they want me to send the check back via mail (won't accept an email photo with the words VOID written on it--never mind that I can't cash the check with the name they have written on it since it's not my name). Billing department manager has gone home for the day at 1p., and I was told they would have to email her and wait until tomorrow for a response. I asked if they could call her, was told yes, but I'm not holding my breath. First team to transport my husband were very good. 2nd team, who was bringing him home from the hospital for hospice care after he suffered a major stroke, couldn't carry him up a shallow flight of stairs on the gurney, had huge trouble getting the transport board under him, and I had to help. They were jostling him like a sack of potatoes, didn't keep him covered despite a strong, cold wind blowing, and didn't strap him in well enough to keep his arms from flopping out as they carried him head down up the stairs. He was moaning and grimacing in pain. One guy was rude, dismissive, arrogant, and disrespectful. The other guy was obviously embarrassed by his colleague's behavior. It was a traumatic experience to say the least. read more

I was hospitalized for 3 1/2 weeks with abdominal surgery at John Muir. I was told that I had to go to rehab to relearn how to walk as I hadn't been ambulated the entire time at the hospital, did not have any solid food and lost 15 lbs. NorCal billed me insisting I could have ambulated or found another source of transportation. Huh? As a result I received a bill even though I have the best Medicare coverage and Supplement coverage. I have never had this happen before! Rude staff, money hungry. Never use this company! There are other options but you have to ask for them. This is a profession where you better have some compassion, caring, give a damn about the people and families you are serving. I have had to have my almost 100 year old , bedridden, nonambulatory, dementia, and nonverbal mother transported to ER numerous times and this has had to be the worst experience ever. It came time to bring her home. The two techs come in the ER room. One huge overweight guy and a young skinny girl no bigger than myself. The guy didn't have his mask completely covering his nose as per protocol. Rudely asked us to have the room to him and is colleague to have room to get my mom on the stretcher. Then ended up having to find another hospital worker to help her on the gurney because he couldn't figure out how to move her. Get her to the house. Can't figure out how to maneuver get the the gurney at least up the 5 steps to the door. Other transport services have done this no problem. It's a 1920 house so obviosly not ADA compliant. They are going to carry her in on the hover matt, and they don't have a wheelchair transport, again other transports have both. But mind you, that that is why the they ask you how many stairs, etc and other pertinent information is ask so that can be relayed. Obviously lost in translation (this is also an issue with other transport services) Mind you it's 2am, cold and one measly sheet covered on her. I was appalled they were trying to carry her up the stairs with that hover mattand he seemed to be struggling with that and her head was dangerously close to the ground. Mom is probably no more than 100lbs. His partner seemed stronger than him.. and the final part where I am done.. Get her to the room and then asks if we mind if they put her on the floor. Apparently half of her (his partner had her lower torso) was too heavy for him, so he had to catch himself to put her on the bed. Others have had no problem with any of this. My caregiver and lifter her his damn self. His whole attitude exuded he did not like his job. Families go through enough when they are dealing with health and should not have to worry if their loved one ( no matter their age) will be dropped on the floor. A person who works for one of the largest health departments of California, appalled at the lack of compassion, borderline disrespect and non caring. read more

MOST HORRIFYING EXPERIENCE ever! My 85-year-old father had a fall and fractured his hip and then had a massive stroke. NORCAL was contracted by hospice to bring him from the hospital to my parents' home for hospice care. The house has 7 steps to the front door: 4 steps, a walkway, and then 3 more steps. This was made very clear ahead of time. When the ambulance arrived at the home, there were three NORCAL employees/EMTs there to bring him into the house. They decided that carrying him safely on the stretcher, where he was buckled in, was too difficult for them. Instead, they opted to pick up the sheets under my very frail, thin, and sick father, and haul him in the house like a sack of potatoes in a hammock. It was the most heartbreaking thing to watch. He was crying out in pain the entire time. It looked like they were going to drop him at any moment, and by the time they got him to the bed in a room by the front door, one of his legs was dangling out from the sheets and his lower body was not being supported. They essentially dragged him up onto the bed. If you are going to hire people to carry other humans when they are sick, broken, and most vulnerable, you must hire people who are strong and capable of handling the work. Four weeks earlier I watched Berkeley FD EMTs carry my father on a stretcher all the way from the second floor, out the front door, and down those same seven steps. They did a beautiful job, and I was never concerned for my father's safety. With NORCAL, I was terrified that he was going to fall and break multiple bones in his body. Our whole family and the hospice nurse looked on in horror. Do NOT use this company. read more

The hospitals and Norcal Ambulance have a racket going on. They all know that medicare won't cover any claims, and they sneak the process by, and later, the patient finds out they are stuck with a bill. I was being transferred from a hospital to rehab. I did NOT need an ambulance, BUT the scammers sent an ambulance, and I got stuck with the bill. They know medicare won't pay but the hospitals and NORCal milk the patients. Thank god for YELP so these crooks can get exposed. read more

Worst medical transport ever. Pre-scheduled a transport and was told that they would need to reschedule as they have a few call ins. No apologies or options given. Some rep name named Crystal was not apologetic and did not care at all. As someone with more than a decade of healthcare experience, caring about the medical community goes a long way. This company does NOT care about their patients and only cares about billing the insurance companies to get as much money as possible. I know this because I worked there. They overwork and overbook emts to pick up patients but make it so that you are always rushing to your next call and are unable to give the best patient care possible. Emts were mostly late to calls (due to being overbooked/underpaid and exhausted) and were scolded by managements and dispatch. There is no compassion or genuine concern for any of NORCAL's clients; they are soulless money hungry private company. Management is rotten and they are awful to their employees. read more

I was in the hospital for hip replacement surgery. My hemoglobin dropped to 6.0. I received 3 blood transfusions. After 4 days and I was stable I was transferred to a qualified skilled nursing facility. I made sure the hospital was approved to accept Medicare. The Medicare book states that Medicare covers ground ambulance transportation when you need to be transported to a skilled nursing facility for medically necessary services. I'm an end stage renal disease patient, because my hemoglobin was so low I had to be on oxygen. I am not normally on oxygen so I needed the ambulance to continue the oxygen for me. This company billed Medicare stating that it was non emergency so Medicare of course denied the claim. I called Medicare and they told me in my case it was covered to call the provider and have them change the billing code to medically necessary. They would not change the code. They would not submit the bill with a new code and explanation. They would do nothing to help me at all. I strongly suggest if you are a Medicare recipient and you need an ambulance service DO NOT USE This Ambulance service Boycott them as much as you can. They do not know anything about Medicare billing they practically called me a liar. They are making me file an appeal with Medicare for payment because they say they cannot change a billing code. Don't get duped by this company. They are not worth it and there are plenty of other companies out there you can use that know how to code bills properly. read more

Horrible business, expensive, and money hungry. I was taken to the hospital against my wishes, nothing was wrong with me medically or mentally. I watched a security guard clip his nails in the ER. They decided to patient dump (don't worry, Stanford Health care was fined for this, a violation of EMTALA). They called Norcal Ambulance to dump me off at another hospital. A fifteen mile ride. That's important, so remember that kids. We had horrible insurance, due to me being unemployed. Well, these idiots billed over $5000 for the ride. Fifteen miles. $4000 base price (that's for driving me there which I could have taken Bart or walked there or driven myself for a LOT CHEAPER) plus, over $1000 for mileage. Not only that (wait kids, there's more...) they charged a frickin' $110 for a test strip and lancet. What a bunch of baloney! When I was dumped off at the other place, the dr asked me why I was even there as I was FINE. But, since Stanford was patient dumping, so was Norcal Ambulance. I don't know where they get their test strips and lancets, but over $50 apiece????? I sent them some new ones Just in case they were hard up. By the way, Ms. Jacqueline in their social media dept said she could help me, but then said I was "racist" for saying that if I were here illegally that it would have been free... Them's the facts people. Especially here in California. Anyway, their billing dept is NOT Interested in helping people with payments or getting to the bottom of things. Once again, I wasn't the one who needed an Ambulance. So I was billed $1590. Ridiculous! They should go out of business. I filed a complaint with the state and I hope they yank Norcal's license to operate. 15 mile ride folks. I didn't even need the ambulance. My insurance kicked it back and hardly paid because, remember folks, it wasn't medically necessary. They have quite the racket going! 15 miles. Over $5000. I didn't need anything. I could have walked. So Jaqueline, I do hope your manager is reading this, because you should be fired for your comments to me. I will be billing Norcal $75 /hr for trying to resolve these issues. Oh, and the dumb knuckleheads took it to collections. They will end up refunding us. With interest. What a bunch of crooks. So, let's get em! Send them some lancets and test strips. I double dare ya! Let them know I told you to do it. I would AVOID Norcal Ambulance if you can. There's certainly choices here in the bay Area. Also, they bill exhorbitant rates because they can. They know it. Expensive! My wife was recently transported after treatment on a non-emergency basis from John Muir Hospital, Walnut Creek, to her assisted living facility 5.2 miles away. The "basic charge" for the Norcal ambulance was $2,150. In addition, Norcal added a mileage charge of $58.50 per mile for a further charge of $304.20. Total cost: $2,454.20. In my experience, Norcal's charges are appreciably greater than those for comparable services. Unless money is of no concern, avoid Norcal. read more

Suffered an injury playing ball and as a precaution, was transported to the hospital by Norcal Ambulance. The two paramedics, John and Leslie, were calm and good at keeping me so. They kept me talking and even threw a couple of jokes in the mix. The bill came a week later and at the time, due to my student budget constraints, could not afford to pay the entire invoice. I called, spoke with Rachel T. to request a deferment plan. She was cordial and flexible, to accommodate a poor student's budget. An update on my review. Finally we were able to get someone on the phone who actually cared & was human about what we went through. Needed ambulance to take my wife to the hospital 30 miles away. We live in Pleasanton and needed to go to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek. This was not an emergency. Norcal Ambulance was very good at their job and arrive at the time agreed on. My wife was very satisfied with the service. Would use them again if needed. They were professional in every area.
