Then we shared half of the advertised "vaca nacional," or "state cow", presumably meat from a cow from Spain, which was more than enough for two people- unless you enjoy 500+ grams to yourself. Ordered "al punto" or "medium rare", it was served to perfection, and accompanied by a side salad and a side of one's choice (we chose fries). We washed it all down a local white wine, perhaps better paired with the anchovies, but nonetheless satisfying with the steak. Also, a "complimentary" bread plate, complete with aioli and tomato purée, was provided at an additional charge of €2.50 per person. While anticipated in Spain, I can't help but find this a tactless addition to otherwise nice meals. We finished our dinner with orders of the torrija (similar to French toast) and strawberry sorbet, respectively. My friend said the torrija was very good, and the sorbet hit the spot. My only complaint of the evening is that toward the end of our meal a male server came out as though he were the cook- it soon became apparent that he was not- and asked every table except for ours how their meal was, at which point I could not help but notice that at each of those tables sat a man, and the question was directed at them. I guess women should just be satisfied to have the freedom to dine out at all.

We came here for a surprise dinner party for a friend's birthday and we did not know how many people were going to show up or what the restaurant was like. First off, the restaurant is situated in a mostly residential area and was a 10 minute walk from the nearest tram station. When we got there it was like coming upon an oasis with it's beautiful terrace and almost militaristic organization of solid wooden tables and shiny cutlery. In the end approximately 25 people showed up for the surprise birthday party and we were seated amongst two extra large tables which had extended multiple times by the staff. The service throughout was professional and friendly. The food. Just about everything that flew out of the kitchen was spectacular! First we had some salads, one being fennel with parmigiano cheese and another being a garden salad which was made of vegetables grown by the restaurant itself. Both were delicious but the fennel with parmigiano cheese blew my mind; I never could have fathomed this combination and they executed it perfectly, cooking the fennel to a delicate but still substantive texture in order to pair with the bits of cheese. Wow! Steak tartar was cut small and spiced large, with what I think included smashed capers. The lady had grilled monkfish which was huge in taste and size, the best "rape" (monkfish in Spanish) she'd ever had. I had looks and tastes of the pork ribs, beef ribs, and chuleton, all of which were of a very high quality and mastered on a grill. Fries were above average. The Enrique Mendoza monastrell was an excellent local red to go with all the bold food. Small mistake- the ice cream, which was fine but not homemade or anything special. This place is a bit pricey. Simple dishes were in the 15-20 range, some meats and seafood in the 22-35 range, and some others in the 80-120 per kg range. Our share of the bill for 2, with appetizers, wine, beer, coffee, 2 entrees, and dessert was €70.

The other restaurants that we've been to with high ratings, seem to take the customer for granted, rushing, impatient with clarifying questions, or downright rude. Not here. We found this restaurant on TripAdvisor where it's very highly rated and were surprised there was no review here. Having said that, we've now been here twice, this review combines both visits. Here's the review: SERVICE: The service here is much more what I'm used to as a Southern Californian. They're pleasant, genuinely nice and they appreciate our business. Every special request (another side salad please? No sauce? Ordering stuff not specifically on the menu: side of roasted potatoes, etc.) were all met with a gracious "of course." DRINKS: --Cava reasonably priced, nice larger pour, tasty. --Tap beer "Caña", reasonably priced, hits the spot. --They have a cocktail with Cava and some bitters, I was expecting mostly Cava with a splash of bitters, but there was so much other stuff in there, there was no effervescence at all from the Cava, I returned it, I wasn't charged. I won't order it again, but thankful they swapped it for me (this would be standard in L.A., not so in Spain). --Margarita, as good as any I've had in SoCal. --Water, we've had both flat and sparkling. They're both "mineraly" with the sparkling being VERY much so, just FYI FOOD: --Smoked salmon "tostada" or toasted bread with cream cheese, dill, capers, caviar. We liked it, the portion was very generous. --Empanada was served cold inside, sadly a rookie mistake, hopefully they'll figure that out We sent it back and they warmed it up properly, it was tasty once served warm. --The burger is beautiful with lots of micro greens, tomato, gorgeous bun, and a side of roasted potatoes with some seasonings that rocked it. --Spaghetti with meatballs, the pasta was fine, the meatballs a bit mealy. We're not big meatball fans, and nobody in our family liked these either, we didn't eat them. My son ordered pasta on our next visit with just butter and parm and that worked for him. --The pork ribs were delish, not the baby-back that we're used to, but every bite was eaten! It was too much for my middle son and so we all got a bit to taste. --The chicken breast was *surprisingly* tasty. Usually we try to avoid chicken breast because it can be dry and tasteless, but they pound it flat, making it cook evenly and then they grill it and it picks up a *fantastic* grilled, smokey flavor. --The side salad of greens is dressed lightly (perfectly in our opinion) with a balsamic dressing. It was so good, my teen son wanted seconds! --The side of baked potato with Roquefort cheese is good, but my husband thought it was almost a meal to itself, too much along side his pork ribs (he did eat every bite though, haha) --The sausage was good too. Hubby ordered with a side of the roasted potatoes and that made a nice meal. --The skirt steak, the best of what we had here, YUM! Strong beefy flavor, very smokey cooked to medium perfectly, my husband shared some of his roasted potatoes, it was a great match. DECOR Downstairs: The bar downstairs has a great view of the ocean and has a very cool decor, lots of thought taken, comfortable. My kids enjoyed the videos of snowboarders. The patio: Nice in that you smell the grill going and it smells great. The decor up there is like a complete afterthought, or they left grandma's decor up there. This really needs attention to make it truly comfortable. There are foux plants on the walls, hopefully they will get around to decorating it soon. You actually do NOT get a great view of the ocean up there because of the way it's set up. But if you want to dine al fresco, it's there. SUMMARY The restaurant is small, if your group is larger than two, I would highly recommend calling and reserving a table, or at least calling and make sure they have a table before you head up. They don't have lots of tables for 4 or 5. As we are English speaking tourists there may have been a language barrier. We ordered the vegetable tempura and the black pudding to start. The appetisers were very tasty including the sauces they came with. 2 of the party ordered rib eye steaks for mains which were some of the best ever tasted. At €20 a great deal coming from a group used to US and Ireland prices. 2 of our party are vegetarian and they much enjoyed the vegetarian pasta dishes. Our server came by while I was busily chewing and I couldn't respond when he asked my partner - who eats simply and rarely complains - how everything was. Tough, that's how mine was. Four or five times I tried to flag him down, and four or five times he didn't notice me. I kept chewing - and chewing, I'd eaten most of my large baked potato and nearly half of my steak kebabs (and had given two chunks of steak to my date). He agreed that it was tough, and complained that his meal was cold. I finally flagged the server down and he argued with me that 1.) he had asked and 'we' said everything was good. I told him *I* never got the chance to respond. 2.) I'd eaten one of the skewers. Well duh! I kept trying to find a tender piece! He asked if I wanted a new serving and because my partner was finished I said, 'no'. He asked what I wanted him to do. I suggested one free meal next time we came in. He came back and had taken ten euros off the bill. I was happy that he'd adjusted the bill a little. I don't feel it was adequate, but it was something. I showed him my Yelp review of the restaurant from our last trip to Spain to back up what I'd told him, and let him know I was not trying to get a free meal. I'd much rather have had the good meal I'd looked forward to. As to ambiance, I'd always enjoyed Patagonia and was delighted that we were going to eat there that night.
