Our 4 dishes were 'average at best' ( 1/2 roast duck) and below, the Capital spare ribs a failure, greens a not so good, and the kung pau chicken really limp, lacked punch, zero finesse on any of the offerings. Value was poor at 32 bucks a head x3. BYO wine for our celebration was appreciated, and as stated, we enjoyed exchanging pleasantries with server / hostess. Quintessential mom n pop Chinese restaurant, 'northern' cuisine, says google reviews (nada on yelp, maybe we FIRST?) Cantonese lingo coming from a loud ladies' table as we we entered the welcoming warmth at 2pm, Not busy, 3 tables out of twenty occupied with food / people. Seated quickly, no staff as yet. 7 minutes past the hour, a teenaged young woman staffer appears: 'place a take away order' ? "We are closing". hmmm. I related how cold we were, and ascertained that in fact 2 : 30 was 'closing time, and could we dine in, please if it suited the kitchen? (I'll find out, she says, no Cantonese spoken it's all in Kiwi English). It IS ok, Menus arrive, we quickly order rice noodles chicken fried which came out quickly. Delicious, flavoursome example of Chinese fried noodles, decent quantity balanced, enough protein, crunchy sprouts, green onion, slight taste of the hot wok / fire = competency in the Cuisine Chinois genre. Four+ star dish Clearly chef KNOWS how ! No offer of HOT tea ! No condiments, chili oil, we found that ourselves. We asked for HOT pot of tea when food arrived, it was NOT monitored for top up boiling water. Entrusting one's business to most teenagers IS risky in our experience. CAN be all right, but in most cases, THEIR agendas, and what's good for biz are mutually exclusive. Pleased with the quality of our edibles, we paid, ( +4 bucks for the tea), braved the wicked weather and set off for the parked car on Queens St, Lower Hutt. As 1st Yelp reviewer, I'd like to be kind to this family business, but fairness dictates 'no cheer leading', just relate the ACTUAL experience. Food was 4.0, as was tea when it got there. Tidiness / comfort of dining room is a 3. Value is a 3.5 Service / attitude below par earns a 1.5. We love mom n pop stores and seek them out. I said no i ordered a mocha milkshake she was polite and said oh ok. I assume they would remake the drink she came back with a milkshake that had pieces of undesolved coffee in it. I was probably the easiest order they had that day and they still couldn't produce quality food, and I ordered a drink. No pride in their work literally there for a paycheck.

I have a dear friend who I graduated from high school in Mississippi over 50 years ago who lives outside Palmerston North after retiring from a 40 year teaching career there in New Zealand. She lives alone in a rural area and raises goats. I had the bright idea that I would like to send her a gift card to dine out with a typical American hamburger experience and with YELP I was able to find, lo and behold, that the California chain of Carl's Jr which we have in Mississippi as Hardee's, has many locations all over New Zealand. There is also a McDonald's there but who treats a friend to a dinner at McDonald's, unless there are children involved? I will have to admit, though, that all my friends do drink coffee at McDonald's in the States which is very, very good and an exceptional bargain for seniors at $.69. I notice from their website Carl's Jr has some seasonal special burgers that are a little far-fetched for my imagination. Anyone who wants a highly rated American burger would be advised to stick to the Big Carl or Original Thickburger before trying any of the exotic concoctions. It seems that gift cards have not yet reached the level of popularity in NZ that they have in the states so I contacted Carl's Jr to see if they had something equivalent. They have a contact form on their website at http://www.carlsjr.co.nz/contact-us/ or you can just email them directly at: Feedback.CJ@rbd.co.nz Their customer service people informed me they do have gift vouchers in any denomination which are similar to gift cards in function but are not reloadable or as flexible since they have to be used for the full face value at time of purchase. Breaking a $50 gift certificate into 5 x $10 is a good idea for your recipient's flexibility. They do take American credit cards and the credit card company handles all the currency exchange which is a great thing. They charge $5 for postage or courier as they call it. A $50 NZ gift plus postage cost me $34 US so it was a great bargain and had the additional benefit of making me feel like the big spender. For those used to the speed of light in internet transactions, plan ahead. While the people at Carl's Jr. were exceptionally nice and accommodating, the process took about 3 weeks. I will ask my friend to report back on her dining experience and post an update to this review at a later date.

The third pounder had a super juicy and tasty beef pattie which was beautifully cooked and mouth watering. The burgers are large, I had one of the smaller larger burgers (pickles instead of salad for example). The fries were crispy, and the shake thick, icy cold, consistent and had one of the most yummy chocolate tastes to it I've had in a shake. Well done BurgerFuel!
