Not like the other travel centers who only offer burgers and fast food! Iron Horse Travel Center in Merkel, TX is one of the absolute best travel centers/gas stations we have been to!

When driving back and forth between West Texas and East Texas, our family plans the trip around THIS stop. They always have ultra clean restrooms and reasonable gas prices. They have fresh barbecue and special novelty snacks. (Yes, they've even got your spicy peaches and candied pecans!) If you're into picking up cool gifts or souvenirs, this place has a lot of those for every season. Cold drinks, coffee, chocolate, dog potty area, travel accessories... you name it... anything you need to make your trip more pleasant... they've got it. And I've never had a rude or negligent attendant/cashier.

There were benches for picnics with shades and also had pavilions available for use! This location is just off the outskirts of Abilene, TX and there are signs directing you to exit off the highway! Great safe rest stop to relax your mind, eyes and brain and for you to get out of the car and walk a little!

And while it was on the opposite side of the road for me heading southeast, it was easy to make a U-turn back towards in a short amount of time. There was ample space for cars, trucks, and big rigs. Trash cans, cigarette receptacles, mostly clean restrooms, vending machines, picnic tables, barbecue grills, handicap, access, interpretive displays and plenty of room to stretch out your legs with the dog, but I'm not sure if there were any dog waste bags available. We didn't see any attendants on the grounds at around 10:30 AM on 5.24.2025, however, this rest area is well-maintained and no trash in sight. Recommended.

Not exactly big cities, but there's a good flow of traffic on this highway and that makes this rest area useful. It is easy to access, serving only northbound traffic. There is a straight line of parking for both cars and trucks. A few trees so if you're lucky, you might find shade to get a nap.
