3.5 Road trip? This…read moreis an ok place to stop if you are traveling on I-65. On the positive side, if you are a Fuel Rewards participant, then fill up here with Shell fuel and get your discount. And if you are a fan of DQ, then step inside the building under the red half of the roof for a DQ treat or Buster Bar or whatever grill items you might enjoy. And if you are in the mood for sweets or some other grab and go item OR....good old fashioned Stuckey's candy and pecans....step on over to the blue half of the building for those items. (And...on a road trip, the bathrooms are important!) Two different doors but same building inside with easy access to either half. On the negative side....the bathrooms leave much to be desired...loose fixtures on the sinks (Men) no paper towels (Women) and a relatively unkempt appearance & smell overall in both. Toss up: GAS prices are within a penny or the same at two other gas station-convenience-eateries within a few hundred yards (Loves - much newer and cleaner and Pilot/Flying J ok).

I managed to stop over in that part of Stuckey's as it was 90° out and ordered one, The cashier was friendly but took awhile with my blizzard. I said earlier they scaled back in their merchandise offerings. This location has scaled back as all it felt like to me was going into a regular Shell that offers Stuckey's Peacan Logs & nothing more unique. El Chido is a Mexican grocery with a restaurant in the back…read more It definitely has a no-frills type ambiance, but i have always found these hole-in-the-wall type places are where you are going to find the best Mexican food. I took a seat and my server came with a smile. She asked if I spoke Spanish. I replied not really and she said she did not speak much English, but we managed to get my order with no issue. I went with four tacos and I loaded them st their salsa bar. The tacos were pretty good. I was debating giving it four stars, but everyone here was just so incredibly friendly that I had to elevate my score to five stars. I would definitely recommend El Chido.

But it isn't...it is an oasis in the middle of nowhere, so it's an easy four. You'll probably find what you need here, if your needs aren't complicated or obscure. During our week at a cabin at Lake Martin, I made runs to D&S to get butter, eggs, milk, beer, salsa, aloe (for sunburned kids), and quite a few other items. Surprisingly good beer selection, with several local (Alabama) craft breweries represented. There's a hot deli that offers burgers, wings, and pizza. As I said, convenient options are non-existent, so it gets busy during lunch and dinner. Gas pump island is startlingly close to the front door, so have some situational awareness, lest you get run over or run over someone.

Right out of the gate let's make one thing very clear...you've heard of a dive when referencing a bar or restaurant, well this is the convenience store equivalent of that. More stuff than what you'll find at a normal convenience store, but nothing like what you'll find at like a Walmart or places like that. They do have some staples, I'm guessing because they are in the middle of nowhere and then a few miles beyond ... so they make it so the folks that are in the area don't have to drive forever (plus a little more) to get to a n actual grocery store. Now, where they excel is in oddities. The one that stood out to me - Peach Mango Angry Orchard .... until seeing it here, didn't even know it existed. Just one example of the different stuff you'll find here. Oh, did I say they also have a full service food area - kind of like a publix - fried chicken and all the fixin's.
