I've played sports and now in Portland, live on a bicycle. Now in my forties, I need to remain active. I went to a Yelp event and by default, I won free foundations classes and a one month membership. I had never done crossfit. Enter a little energized sparkplug by the name of Alex, and you have Mt Tabor CrossFit's reason for being. She is encouraging, positive and great at correcting your form. I have always been used to isolated workouts, so getting used to circuit training is a bit different but, so far I've adapted well. It is just me and one other in our class and we've caught on pretty quick. So far, so good and if you are up for trying something new, go see Alex. Enjoy.

Prior to coming here I had thought crossfit consisted of running, cycling, and swimming ... Boy,…read morewas I wrong! It's high intensity, short duration that trains you to be a well-rounded athlete, hence the name Crossfit. Alex is a little fire-cracker of a coach and she's wonderful at explaining the movements, I love the support I get from Alex plus cheers from fellow classmate! The workouts can seem intimidating but it is modified to your fitness level ... If you are looking for a challenge and see what your limits are, this may be the place worth checking out, it is a very competitive environment but you are mostly competing against yourself.

I joined in February and love this place. I've always hated gyms because of their heteronormativity…read moreand it's nice to work out in a space that feels safe for all. This is the only gym where I've been consistent and stayed consistent and in the four months I've been a member I've seen noticeable improvements in my musculature, core strength and stamina. I go for the classes. If you pay for the monthly membership all classes are included. I try to hit three a week. I hope to attend more open gym times in the future but for right now the evening classes work with my schedule. There's a couple things I could nitpick. I wish they were open all day on Saturday and Sunday. It makes more sense to be open half days on a weekday for those of us who work 9-5s. I think the powerlifting class should be limited to no more than 6 - 8 people given the equipment limitations. But overall I'm not here to be at the most resourced or state of the art gym. Place is important and I need to workout publicly in a space that's affirming and that's what I've found here. The trainers are great. Eloise is fantastic. She takes you seriously and provides good critique on form while also challenging you to improve. She has great bedside manner and I'm always happy to take her classes even if they kick my ass sometimes. Felicia is also fantastic and plays great music and I appreciate Kristen's chill energy during powerlifting. I love the get ups and hinges class most, followed by kettlebell 7. The conditioning class is sadistic and occasionally I'll go to test my progress. Last time one of the exercises included doing 1000 jump ropes. I was like oh so you hate us hate us but I also felt accomplished by rising to the challenge. I moved to Portland about 9 months ago and didn't think it would be as hard as it has been to find community but EKC has been a welcoming part of my weekly routine that has made me feel connected to my community. It's two blocks from my house and for the first time in my life actually enjoy working out. It's not a cheap gym by any means but it's not budget breaking. They have a flexible pricing scheme for income limited folks. They're always making little improvements here and there including adding more signage and painting and I appreciate their desire to revise and improve on themselves as I am too. Love this place. Can't say enough good things. Almost don't want more people to come because I like the class sizes as they are but I also want to support this place that's made me feel very welcomed.

The trainers are knowledgeable, attentive, and generous with their time and instruction. Eloise has already offered me several corrections / adjustments that have improved my experience. (Felecia and Tess, too!) While rigorous, each class and program accommodates multiple levels of experience and fitness. Above all, I have been impressed by the welcoming and supportive atmosphere/culture, deepened and sustained by EKC's members. Here, one can truly come as they are. I feel motivated and inspired and look forward to my next workout at/with EKC.

I have had a great time with all the instructors at Fulcrum. They hit the sweet spot between encouraging and over the top cheerleading. They all know their stuff and give good corrections. The workouts are varied in format, music, and focus so I didn't get bored. I had a serious injury and they modified exercises for me while I progressed back to full weight bearing and impact. The instructors I regularly look for are Jai, Freddy, Cheryl, and Dakayla. I loved Rodney but he moved. Space: The gym looks like a gym, not a health spa. I like this. It is clean and well maintained. There is an outdoor platform and a garage door which has been great for COVID necessary ventilation. COVID: They took it seriously [sanitation, masking, ventilation] and even let me know when I may have been exposed [pre-vaccine era]. Payment: I had a few hiccups with injuries and life changes and they were gracious about suspending my membership until I could return. Women: There are tons of badass women who work out here. Classes are dominated by women. Cons: I cannot really think of any. For first time boot camp/weight lifters, I would recommend doing their health assessment/intro interview. They will show you some moves there. Don't be intimidated by the acronyms or moves - everyone can do them and pros will give you good individual attention if you need it.

I've been attending PDXFIT regularly for three weeks, and am genuinely thrilled to write a review…read morefor this wonderful neighborhood gym. I've passed it for over a year, but dismissed it as it seemed too expensive. However, it being a four minute walk from my house and feeling my body slowly loose all fitness from being sedentary, it felt worth it to try the one week pass. After a week, I immediately signed up as a member, and it feels completely worth the cost. I've worked out at several gyms, ranging from 24 hour fitness types to similar boutique gyms like PDXFIT. PDXFIT has the ideal balance of friendliness, a relaxed environment, community orientation, with excellent and stringent teaching with a high level of focus on form and safety. It's also spotlessly clean, which is a pretty remarkable feat for a gym. Marco, the owner, and Halden, the other coach, are both wonderful, kind teachers who don't let you get away with poor form. Leslie, the co-owner, is also one of the friendliest and kindest people I've ever met. I particularly appreciate Marco's consistent focus on explaining the reasoning behind a particular exercise or way of doing something. Here are some questions I had before I came in that have been answered and will hopefully help others: 1) What do you get for the money? The membership covers small-group workouts six days per week. Classes are capped at 10 people so there's always plenty of room as well as access to coaching when needed. M,W,F,S are a combination of coached classes and open gym, T,Th are just open gym. The intangibles are that I've been a member for three weeks and have already been invited to three gym events that are either parties or supplemental workouts that include a social hour. 2) What kind of workouts are there? There are 3 different "tracks" you can take (not sure if it's actually called that) - one that is cardio focused, one weights focused, and one that is a blend of both. The workouts include for all a blend of free weights, barbells, kettlebells, and cardio (rowing, ski machine, or a horrible horrible hands and legs bike that is the meanest workout machine I've ever met), in different percentages depending on the track. The workouts are modifiable but I find myself very well challenged here. I also appreciate that the focus isn't on speed workouts outside of sprinting, and that timed rest is built into every workout, so I feel more able to focus on keeping my form than in crossfit or similar metcon type workouts. Each workout includes a warm-up, cool-down is on your own. 3) What level of fitness or knowledge do you have to have to be comfortable? I would say I personally have a medium level of knowledge and a currently low level of fitness, and I feel very comfortable there. There are people working out who are more "beginner" in terms of knowledge/fitness, as well as badasses who can apparently do one armed pull-ups and similar nonsense :D Everyone across the board has been very welcoming. 4) Is it welcoming to queer folks? This was a personal question to me as one never knows when going into a fitness space and I've had bad experiences with microagressions and similar trash. The answer is absolutely yes. I am a visibly queer, non-binary person who can't shut up about my wife, and I have been completely welcomed by both the owners and other members, and have met several queer attendees. That might be my only suggestion to the gym - a sign indicating "all are welcome here" for folks with various identities would have likely gotten me to come by earlier! This review is already far too long, but I am hopeful that it encourages folks to give PDXFIT a try. It's a great gym and I hope to be a member for a very long time.
