The front desk staff and coach were both very friendly and welcoming. The layout of this studio is pretty nice in terms of space and is located in a plaza that has a decent size parking lot.

I had never done an Orangetheory class before- I had never even been inside of one. (I thought the glass was orange, but when I got the studio tour, I realized the glass was clear, but all of the lights inside are orange). They loaned me a HR monitor and made sure I was comfortable on the rower and the treadmill before the class started. We didn't quite need the 30 minute pre-session block, but I can see how people with more questions might have used close to the entire thing. I got a good workout: I started on the rower, then moved to weights, then ended on the treadmill. The instructor was awesome, and I definitely got a good workout (the "orange zone" for which the business is named). I wish the weights section had been a little longer, but I was told they have different classes that focus on different sections instead of squeezing all 3 into an hour if you are looking for something more focused. The hardest part of the class for me was learning to use all of the buttons. Each machine syncs to your heartrate monitor, and a lot of the efforts are timed and designed to be at particular difficulties. By the end of class, I had gotten the hang of it. The instructor reviewed my chart with me (every person has one with your workout metrics, like average heart rate, calories, and time spent in each heart rate zone). They also send an email summary of the information, so you don't have to write anything down. I would totally go to another class, but I don't think I could use it as my only gym membership (I need at least a few heavy weights days). The only downside is the high cost, and the fact that you have to go when a class is in session. They have class packages you can buy, and even a membership level that rounds out to about $15/class, so that's not bad if you can manage to go once a week. I would definitely recommend giving it a try, no matter what your level of fitness! (the first class is free!)

If you're someone who usually dreads working out, StudioME is the place that will change your mind!…read moreI'm not a gym person by any stretch, but the trainers here are simply amazing. They go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable, and they genuinely meet you where you're at, be it through fitness coaching or private training. They never push you beyond your limits, but instead, encourage you in ways that make you want to keep going. What really stands out is how welcoming the atmosphere is; there's no judgment, just a sense that everyone is there to feel their best. The trainers take time to understand your goals and challenges and adjust routines in ways that feel manageable, which has been huge for me as someone who feels intimidated by fitness. Every session feels like progress, and I leave each time feeling accomplished rather than overwhelmed. StudioME has really shifted my perspective on working out, and I'm actually excited to keep coming back! For anyone who feels hesitant about the gym scene, I highly recommend giving this place a try.

The facility is a little hidden, and only accessible through a door inside the parking garage (see photo of mural near the doors, and the buzzer). When I went, the buzzer wasn't working, so I was stuck in the garage for a few minutes until someone saw my email for help and came to let me in. There is free parking validation for the parking ramp available. The workout space and changing area was very nice- colorful, clean and with lots of plants as decor. I was part of a semi-private training group of 4 people. The coach was professional and friendly, and rotated among each person to supervise or demonstrate movements. The workout started with foam rolling and some warm-up movements, then transitioned into high-rep low-resistance activation movements, incorporated 3 different higher-weight movements, and ended with a short cardio finisher. The entire workout was guided by a tablet, onto which the class plan for the day had ben pre-loaded. It had a timer and listed the weights and reps for each movement. When you finished one set, you simply clicked "continue" on the screen and the next exercise you had to do would appear. I think this tool is useful for keeping track of individual progress (both with overall weight progression over time and during a particular workout), especially when in a group setting, but I found the constant required engagement with the tablet to be annoying. I really didn't like having to click after every set of every exercise. It made me feel like the tablet was telling me the workout, rather than the coach, and given that the studio only allows access for guided workouts, this didn't work for me. (Note: when you sign up, you also get access to 8 bootcamp or yoga workout sessions a month in addition to your personal training). The studio was having an upcoming 10th anniversary celebration, so there is a community of people who utilize the offerings. Studio Me also offers fit testing, and quarterly challenges for clients. They want you to come consistently and ideally at the same times each week to ensure you progress. I can see this kind of workout being good for people with a very specific goal (like they say on their website, some kind of physical therapy or lifting goal), but it wasn't the right fit for me, as I didn't feel like I got a full-body workout from my 45 minutes, and I didn't like the tablet system. The sessions are also super expensive: 2 sessions a week under a 6 month contract costs $359, 3 sessions $539. 2 sessions a week under a 12 month contract costs $327, 3 sessions $490.

With over a decade of experience coaching all ages--especially youth--I also served as an assistant coach and videographer at Hive, supporting the school in any way I could. Unfortunately, a recent incident with a confrontational parent, Andrea Deshone, exposed serious gaps in the school's approach to conflict resolution. After a class, Andrea aggressively approached me over a complaint from her daughter, Stella, an instructor at Hive that day. Instead of addressing her concerns professionally, Stella went to her mother, who then confronted me. Despite my calm requests for space, Andrea refused to back away and even stepped closer when I expressed that I felt threatened, effectively cornering me. She got so close that I could feel her breath and spit. Mr. Froeming and another student approached, and I pleaded for help, explaining that I felt attacked and trapped. It can be as frightening for a man to feel threatened by a woman, knowing that defending oneself could have serious consequences. Unfortunately, this nuance was not acknowledged here. A trusted adult student witnessed the exchange, observing that I had simply asked a question of the only instructor in my group. Later, this student confirmed to Mr. Pallesen that I had done nothing wrong. Despite this corroboration and texts supporting my account, Mr. Pallesen never acknowledged this and chose not to address the issue. Initially, he agreed to mediate, but after I submitted a personal account explaining the incident's impact on my CPTSD--which affected me severely for two weeks and still affects me--he declined to read it and suggested I pretend the incident hadn't happened. When I asked if he would take the situation seriously if the genders were reversed, he confirmed that he would, highlighting an inconsistency. In our exchanges, Mr. Pallesen shared his own experience with Andrea, recounting how her family aggressively confronted him in 2017 about his treatment of children, saying, "What the f--k happened? Why are you treating the kids like this?" According to him, this intervention forced him to self-reflect, helping him save his business. He also explained that Andrea's family threatened him with a bad review, which he acknowledged could have impacted his business. This may explain his reluctance to address my situation directly, but I genuinely hope he learns from this experience as he did with his previous encounter so he can grow as both an instructor and a leader. This experience reflects broader concerns about leadership and standards at Hive. During one leadership lecture, Mr. Pallesen stated that "both political parties are basically the same," a comment that bothered one student, Beth, so much that she responded, "That is the definition of white privilege," highlighting a lack of sensitivity in a group that includes people of color and people of the LGBTQ+ community. While Mr. Froeming and most of the community were wonderful, the lack of professional support from leadership ultimately left my daughter and me feeling disconnected from a place we once considered family. I share this review in the hope that Hive Martial Arts can reflect and grow, strengthening its community for all.

In spite of ups and downs, I have been a member of Plate Fitness for over a decade and across state lines, and I have traded the quality and courtesy of a real gym for low cost, convenience, and somewhat acceptable conditions that this franchise seemed to offer at least for a while. However, I would still expect a certain degree of professionalism and respect. After moving to MN over 2 years ago, I have visited several locations but returned to this one mainly due to convenience, in spite of below average hygienic conditions, individuals with no gym courtesy, hogging half the weight rack in front of one bench, not cleaning after themselves, coming in socks, barefoot, or wearing flip flops, stealing equipment, smelling like they haven't showered in over a week, etc. No matter of the hour, most days the staff at the Roseville PF fails to supply the paper towel dispensers when empty and have had to hunt around half the gym to be able to clean equipment down. To minimize having to deal with all this, I have chosen to go during the graveyard shift for as long as my schedule has allowed it. Instead of improving the conditions of current members, the focus seems to be on overselling memberships while offering a constantly declining quality. New recent "renovations" have brought no positive changes. They fang shuai-ed the old equipment and started cracking down on people that are serious about working out and carry their personal equipment in designated gym bags. Of course, they offer the possibility of using lockers for which they conveniently sell locks or cubbies which can serve only a quarter of the present members. In spite of storing my gym bag away from traffic and against the wall or next to the machines that I am using, during the last couple of visits I have been harassed by several staff members half my age regarding their new enforcement of the "no gym bags policy". I have showed them what I have in the bag ( gloves, straps, water bottle, wallet, keys, ear buds, lifting belt, lifting chain, etc) and I informed them why I need my equipment with me. I have a very limited time to come in and do my workouts and I cannot spend 3 hours running between the lockers and gym floor while having to increase wait time for equipment. I cannot put my phone in a locker that can be easily broken into and risk unwanted access to protected patient information. I cannot put my phone on the ground or on gym equipment risking contamination of devices that I take into operating rooms or operatories. I also invited them to check my bag before and after my workouts in order to assure them that I am not one of the members dedicated to appropriating gym equipment. I invited them to tell me what makes no sense to them from the explanation provided, but I was met with "policies" and aggressive stare downs. They said that they couldn't let all members carry gym bags. This would be a non-issue if all admitted members would share basic gym courtesy to keep bags out of the walking areas and would not practice stealing, while the business wouldn't try to sell lockers. To potential members that are true gym lovers, I would advise finding a different location or in the event this is adopted as the general modus operandi of the entire Planet Fitness franchise, possibly find a different gym. To Planet Fitness owners and managers this may concern, I challenge you to revise your policies as well as the member and staff selection process in order to align with better serving your existing, long-standing members instead of harassing them ultimately leading to loss of business.
