I can't attest specifically to the in-office treatment provided by Nit Free Noggins, but still felt compelled to write a review. I was calling around to explore treatment options for my daughter and came across this page. Early into the conversation I learned that the location of the office would be too far for us to travel to. Nevertheless the woman I spoke with over the phone spent almost 20 minutes with me asking questions about our situation and offering some advice to help us work through it. Anyone who offers their time and expertise despite knowing they won't be selling their product or service to someone clearly cares and wants to help. After three rounds of lice for my 9-year-old son with at-home treatments (expensive, smelly, harsh, and clearly ineffective), I finally went to see the professional at Nit Free Noggins. Christine treated him, and me (lucky me), two hours after I called them. Their Damen office is clean, bright, and exactly what you'd want for a lice salon! Christine even gave me all the supplies and instructions to clean my car (parked right in front) while my son was being treated. Yes, it's more expensive than typical at-home treatment, but the education I got from Christine will save me time and money in the future. Also, there was zero pressure to buy any stuff to take home. Christine even gave me tips on regular brands and products to use to keep lice at bay (any shampoo with rosemary, mint, or tea tree oil, plus comb with a serrated nit comb at least weekly, or daily if kid is in close contact with other kids). You may think you're educated on lice and can comb them properly yourself....but once you've been schooled by Christine you'll know that your experience pales by comparison. I honestly think this place and Christine and Carrie are life savers! I have over 20 inches of hair, we tried the home treatment, spent over $60 and 4 hours, terrified my poor 3 year old and still woke up the next morning with both of us having crawling bugs on our heads! I was desperate. I thought I was going to have to pay a ton of money, totally not the case. Christine was so friendly and extremely helpful. She let me ask tons of questions, I didn't feel pressured into purchasing certain treatments or products. I walked away feeling so much more informed and bug-less! The whole process was so thorough. She was super great with my son and even showed my mother and I how to check to avoid future occurrences. I absolutely recommend this place! Both ladies were super friendly and helpful. It's an overall stressful experience! My son and I were both able to return to school and work the next day. The salon was clean and they were super professional! I will never waste money on those highly chemically filled "treatments" again. If I ever have this unfortunate situation happen again, I know exactly how to handle it! This place is the best -- we got the dreaded letter from school even after we had preemptively treated our daughter for lice. My daughter was in tears. For a very reasonable cost, Nit Free Noggins owner Carrie thoroughly and gently combed out our daughter's hair with a special comb, confirmed that the ones she found were dead, gave us some tips for keeping lice away-- and we left happy with our daughter's hair in two neat braids. read more

My two daughters and I came in on a Thursday because we thought we spotted some lice at home. We came in for a check and got the all clear. Then Monday we went for haircuts and were sent home due to lice. There were already bugs in the hair which take 7 to 10 days to develop from eggs. For some reason nothing was seen three days prior to the bugs being spotted at the children's hair cut place? These are supposed to be professionals and they charge for this service. I was so upset that we had to come back after being cleared the first time. Also the woman that works there is not kid friendly. She snaps at the children and had my 6 month old baby in tears with his combing. She was rude to my daughter and hit her with a box of combs when she wasn't listening to her directions. Ended up spending 350 on treatments, which would have been find if they caught it the first time around. read more

Carrie and another wonderful woman far exceeded our expectations. They took an otherwise awful experience and turned it into a very pleasant one. If was frustrating dealing with this issue and I couldn't believe how positive and happily they took care of everything. Offered the children snacks, a movie, were polite and it was all done in a very clean, well maintained environment. In reading all of these other reviews, I'm really surprised. We visited Nit Free Noggins on Damen last night, and admittedly, both of my daughters had lice. I had been treating them at home for 4 days and didn't feel like I was accomplishing enough, so I knew we needed professionals. We had used Nit Free Noggins in Wheeling, IL, about a year ago, when my preschooler had an outbreak at her school. The Wheeling experience was awesome; the Chicago experience was... not. When we arrived for our appointment at Nit Free Noggins, the door was locked, and the window blinds were closed. We were looking around to make sure we were in the right place, when a woman came to the door and acted irritated that we were there. Ok... but we had an appointment, and we were about 3-4 minutes early, so... I work in a customer service environment myself, so I'm generally pretty understanding about people who serve the public -- I get it, if you're having a bad day, or if we were late (we weren't) -- but c'mon, you are working with kids, who might be scared/embarrassed/nervous in a new place. After 3-4 minutes with this woman, I had a very bad gut feeling about the entire situation.... but again, my kids had lice, and I knew we needed what we were there for. When I tried explaining to the woman that I'd found the lice on Friday, and had been trying to treat at home for days, she insisted there was no way I'd been treating my older daughter (age 8) myself (should I have shown her my Walgreens Nix receipt?). She combed through my daughter's hair very roughly, for nearly 30 minutes, yanking hair right and left. My typically mellow daughter began crying, but the woman treating her didn't show any empathy or try to be more gentle. "I am pulling the lice off her head!" she told me when I asked if she could go a little easier.... my daughter's head/scalp was red, and clearly really hurting. I don't necessarily want to re-hash the entire experience, but it was BAD. Overall, this woman was clearly angry at something (me? my kids?), and was taking it out on my children's heads. She never smiled once... oh wait, yes she did, at the end when I was paying her.... and when I asked her to take breaks with both of my girls (because they were crying out in pain), she walked away and I thought I heard her mumbling something about "I can't believe this" under her breath. I couldn't believe it either! Look, I feel crappy enough as a parent, having two girls who have somehow contracted lice, and now both of them are crying from pain. Halfway through my younger daughter's treatment, I called it -- I just said we were done, and she only charged me for half of the treatment. We had all had enough. I'll admit, I haven't ever written a Yelp review, but this experience was just so bad... I came to Yelp today to look up Nit Free Noggins, to see if my experience was unique. I guess it is! If we're in this lice situation again (hopefully we're not), I will be looking elsewhere. I really don't think the woman we worked with should be working with children, period. read more

We went here a few months ago. I'm terrible at writing reviews but spent a lot of time researching this place before we went and thought others would benefit. Apparently lice is a common thing among elementary school kids but I had no idea what to do. My daughter was scratching her head about a month after the "lice alert" from her school went out. I thought it was dry scalp, etc. but after a week or so I was combing out her hair & thought I spotted a bug. So nasty. So I spent hours googling lice, natural lice treatments, etc. Finally I just called this place. The woman agreed to meet us at the Damen location the following day. So my 2 daughters, nanny and I all got our heads checked. The adults were fine but the kids both had them. Ew. The treatment was actually super easy & almost like a kid spa experience. You get the whole "salon" to yourself. The kids watch cartoons while their hair is combed, given a hot oil type treatment, blow dried and then re-combed. The woman was so gentle and funny. My 2 year old called her the lice doctor. She gave us spray for our carseats and lots of do's/don'ts for when we got home. She also taught my girls how to give "belly hugs" vs. the head to head cuddles that spread lice at school. She encouraged braids at school - advice I followed every day for the last few months of school That is all. No sign of lice afterwards. They didn't come back. It wasn't cheap - $400ish but totally worth it. And now i'm scratching my head just thinking about it. read more

I wish I could put into words the experience we had, because if I were to admit it, you would never believe the FUN we had here, yes I said it getting rid of LICE with my 7 year old daughter was FUN - thanks to the staff at NIT FREE NOGGINS! (just ask if they can do the splits) LOL! I have NEVER paid anyone to remove lice from mine/my daughters head and let me tell you she has a HEAD FULL OF HAIR!!! I finally gave in and reached out to inquire on pricing, with my budget being a little tight at the time, I politely declined the service and instantly received a text back telling me 'please come in we will do everything we can for you, we never want a child to suffer' that again SOLD SOLD SOLD! I went in with my daughter at 5PM at night and as we were entering a family of 5 kids and the mom were leaving, knowing the energy of children I would have been done!! NOPE, the staff had the energy that the kids probably had and treated us with nothing but respect, guidance and trust and the same energy we walked into we left with as well as 2 new friendships! During a recent vacation, my husband was informed that my stepson had been exposed to head lice. While we didn't know for certain if any of us had head lice, as a precautionary measure we shampooed with both over the counter as well as prescription treatments. When we returned from our trip, I made an appointment with Nit Free Noggins. After a thorough inspection by Christine, my husband and I were in the clear - however my stepson did have head lice. My son recently caught lice; having never been through this before, I foolishly did an over-the-counter treatment thinking it would be sufficient. Boy, was I wrong! Once I realized my mistake, I called Nit Free Noggins and made an appointment for my son, my husband and myself. Jennifer greeted us and was super funny and helpful. She quickly gave me supplies to clean my car to ensure we went home in a lice-free vehicle. While I was outside, she got down to business with my 10-yr old son whose head was totally infested despite the Nix treatment we'd used and several sessions of combing out nits. Once my son was finished, Jennifer quickly checked my husband and me. I'm so glad we came here when my daughter had lice. We had checked her head at home and only found a couple nits (which is enough, believe me!) but when we brought her here, the woman actually pulled out several bugs! I was very surprised. She showed us what the lice look like and how to comb my daughter's hair at home in the best/most thorough way with the lice-comb. The woman was super knowledgeable and thorough. She even recommended a cheaper option for us because she said my daughter's case was not that bad. I'm always impressed when a business puts the client's interests ahead of making money. I would definitely come back to Nit Free Noggins in the future, but I sincerely hope we don't have to!!!! read more
