Now referred to by us as The Magic Shop, this little gem is packed with all sorts of goodies, from Suma products to Miso paste to tofu to frozen hash browns to cake to cereals to anything else you might need or want. The aisles are ridiculously narrow which can be a pain, but the shopkeepers are really friendly and helpful - they'll even order things in for you if you ask nicely. There is some markup on prices like in any smaller store, but it's so nice to have a quirky little place like this in the area I'm willing to bite the bullet once in a while to keep supporting it.

I lived right around the corner from this Tesco for almost a year and was often pleased with the…read moreselection, but at times was very annoyed at the quality they provided. This Tesco was large and had an electronics section, clothing, music, house hold stuff etc. Its almost like a crappy Target. Regardless, this is where I went grocery shopping. The produce section was probably the best part of the store. They had fresh fruits and veggies, assuming you go there in the day or two after the shipment arrived. I love the mini lettuce they had, as it was perfect for sandwiches. The dairy area was fine, including the cheeses, which were best if you bought Scottish or Welsh cheese. The meat was a different story. Ground red meat = terrible. Chicken = acceptable. Sausages = pretty good. Fish = pathetic. I guess I'm spoiled by much of the red meat I get in the US, so unless you got the top choice meat here, it was pretty poor in my opinion. This isn't a knock on the store though and did not contribute to the 3 star rating. Overall this place had enough stuff to be a good grocery store, but had many downsides. Price wise, it was a great deal locally.

Stopped by for a coffee (excellent if a bit dear at £2.30 for a small cup) this morning and am sure to return soon. This end of Portobello Road felt very neglected until a few years ago and is slowly turning into a bit of a foodie magnet. Bluebelles Cafe next door and Lowry & Baker across the road. There's also an increasing number of farmers/organic food stalls appearing at weekends. Salumeria makes perfect sense as they are more a delicatessen in the vein of Mr Christian's on Elgin than just another yummy cafe. They are offering a very unusual selection of cheeses from Italy and Britain - some are made in London. Definitely not your everyday cheese on toast variety but perfect for a special occasion. The meat counter is even better stocked and you can order fresh cuts for the weekend.

There is nothing that makes this store worth travelling miles just to see (it is, after all, just a grocer-type place) but when your are here you'll see that it is worthy of it's four stars. It does indeed sell everything you would expect of a convenience store - with a healthy alcohol section (substantial, not necessarily good for you) - but that should only really equate to 3 stars in my eyes. The fourth star is awarded for the level of cleanliness and the sense of order here at G Express. ALL of the aisles are well stocked with a large variety of goods, neat, tidy well arranged. But the best part of it is that G Express became the first place where it was so clean I could see my own reflection in the floor! THE FLOOR! Alright, it's not like looking straight into a mirror but the are definite outlines and facial features visible, I could clearly see me - in the floor! Awesome floor. That aside, the staff are all quite chilled and friendly and an impressive modern computer system is running there which includes a large flat-screen TV which doubles up as their CCTV when their not watching football or their favourite show. What a convenience store, TTFN, Ian

A pretty average Sainsbury's Local store in most regards from selection to look/feel of the store, the security guard seemed pretty friendly and even shared a joke with me. This store offers Sainsbury's Smartshop which means you can scan and pay on your phone, which then generates a receipt and you can then leave. If you are using this, you may be subject to a service-check which will delay you leaving the store, this can be annoying as the staff aren't always ready/prepared or even trained on this, but you have to understand why they need to do it from Sainsbury's point of view. I also don't understand why the QR code to start the shop has been hidden in the checkout area, as obviously you need this to begin Smartshop, they seem to be advertising it around the store, but with little help on how to start your shop - I have noticed this to be the case at many other Sainsbury's stores so does seem to be a big problem within the brand. 3* - OK, certainly not bad to get some essentials if you're staying at a nearby hotel or heading home, I do prefer Marks and Spencer nearby and the store isn't really suited for anything other than quick shopping for essentials.
