I feel like I always order waaay too much food here but it's always good. They offer a pretty good carry out service as well but I do prefer eating it there for the sake of freshness. I wish they'd side bat the hibachi and offer ramen but that's just what's hot right now. The hibachi aesthetic seems outdated and obnoxious at times but I guess is a lucrative business model for them so whatever. They also offer some Korean menu items. I've not gone down that road as I tend to eat Korean food at Korean restaurants but I'm gonna try it this weekend hopefully and come back to this review. read more

I got food poisoning from this place. Like if the food is not quality please do not serve it!! If something looks off, be safe and make the right choice to not give it to someone. Because i was that someone who got bad sushi. I don't even eat raw sushi! I only ever get crab and shrimp. So there in itself lies the problem. I give it to Ninki for being wise about their marketing strategy. Our recent Yelp's Cravin' For Asian Weekly Yelp (http://www.yelp.com/weekly?edition_id=wONFT-H307gq1Weu0g6nIg) informed me that Ninki offers 50% off an alluring assortment of sushi at all times. No kidding! Sounds too good to be true, right? This is precisely why I had to venture out to Belle Meade for my veg sushi fix... well that is until I saw the fantastic lunch bento box deal at $6.95. Everything from the 4 pieces of sushi to the salad, miso soup, tempura, and rice were excellent. The portions were just right but the standout was the miso soup! You may not think that miso is very exciting but I appreciated the big chunks of shitake mushrooms and robust flavor. Yum in the tum. Don't judge this book by it's cover either. From the exterior, Ninki is nestled inside a dated strip mall but when you walk through the doors, it is a spacious and dark place to relax and enjoy tasty but affordable Asian cuisine. If you're planning a dinner for a large group or a dinner party, the space has a couple of private areas that accommodate and there appears to be some flexibility in the layout of the space. I will definitely come back to Ninki but on my next trip, I will try the deeply discounted rolls instead. Definitely consider this spot for lunch or even a date too! read more

Ninki was exactly what a three-start review entails - A-OK. If you are reading this review prior to November 15th, 2011, you should run not walk to Ninki because ALL sushi rolls are 50% off until then!! And the sake tonight was $1... that's right, $1. Um, it tasted a few steps up from isopropyl alcohol, but it was $1. (And you don't have to order the cheap hot sake like I did. ALL sake tonight was $1.) The rolls and nigiri I had were good. Thankfully they were 50% off, because I agree with other reviews that the menu does seem expensive. They were "specialty" rolls I ordered, I realize, but still - $14 and $9 for a roll. Seems like a lot. The variety is interesting. There are many rolls, but commonly found things like spicy tuna or just salmon are missing. However, cream cheese and/or avocado are very prevalent on the menu. I asked if the "Fire" rolls were spicy. They are entitled "Fire" rolls because they actually come ON FIRE. Yes, lit on fire. Don't be turned off by the strip mall location and impression that it's tiny. I was surprised to walk in and go down a hallway to be greeting by a great looking, HUGE space with ample seating and hibachi tables! My friends took me here for dinner when I was in town for a visit. We had no problems getting seated right away on a friday night (though most people were probably still at the Preds game or watching on TV). Our waiter was very pleasant and on top of our order and refills. And how awesome is the half price sushi!?! And on a Friday night?! It wasn't as good as my favorite place in my hometown, but it was delicious and CRAZY affordable (I paid for myself and my friend who was letting me stay with her, and my bill was about as much as just my meal at my usual place at home!). The sushi is great- really great. But their fried rice is out of this world. It's the comfort food I crave and love. The portions are huge and can easily feed 2 people. I tried out the hibachi for lunch. It was a great price and they gave me a ton of food. I really enjoyed the friend rice, especially with the yum yum sauce. The chicken seemed over cooked and wasn't my favorite. The salad was drown in dressing and looked more like soup. I would think about coming for hibachi again but trying a different meat. On other occasions I've been here and gotten the bento boxes for dinner. It's a great way to try a lot of different things at an affordable price. The food in the bento boxes is always good. A dining experience for a friend's birthday left me never wanting to go to Ninki again, as the service was terrible. Bringing out dinner plates at various times and forgetting to submit an order for a guest at the table until AFTER all checks had been delivered to the table is by far, the worst thing a server can do. Okay, so the food here isn't really worthy of 5 stars - more of a 4 star for just the food, but this really has become one of my go-to places in Nashville, for one, because I love sushi, and two because they have a really vast and interesting menu. I can always come here and get something new. Also, they always have toro and uni, which is very hit or miss at other places. Another one of my favorite things about this place is that when I order nigiri when they are busy, I usually have to wait a little longer to get it for the best of reasons - they only let their most experienced chef slice the nigiri, and I don't think it's because the others are not capable, they just want the master chef cutting it, and I appreciate that, especially when forking out money for toro, and it always comes the same way every time. I've always felt that nigiri needs to drape over the rice and be laying flat on the plate at both ends. That's just the size nigiri should be, and it always is like that here. Don't neglect their specials! I ordered the (cooked) yellowtail collar, and not only was it very good, but the portion was quite large. I've ordered the bibimbap, which was quite good as well, but really was slightly overcooked as the hot bowl crisped up the rice too much, and yes I stirred it right away. I had a couple issues with their bulgogi. Was it good? Yes. It wasn't even close to the best I've had (especially since Korea), but they don't serve it with lettuce to wrap it up!?! In any case, I really like this place now. I forgot to mention that you can also get in and out of here on the cheap if you're just have a craving. Cheap: I highly recommend a Jack's Roll if you want that fried fish, eel and cream cheese taste. I get it every time I go. Also, the lunch boxes are awesome, and come with their delicious salad and onion soup. Expensive: Toro, of course. Lots and lots of Toro. Their salmon is always very, very good as well. Before heading to Ninki, I read all the mixed reviews- so I was a little nervous. However, I was craving sushi and the 50% off of selected sushi rolls seemed too good to turn down, especially on this part of town where the pickins for good Asian cuisine are slim. When we walked inside, a friendly host greeted us. The restaurant was more spacious than I expected. Our server was also very attentive and enthusiastic about the restaurant. She talked it up so much I thought maybe she was the owner! I really appreciated her recommendations too. I think she was spot on for what I was looking for. When the food came out, it was displayed well. The sushi rolls were the perfect combination of fresh fish and rice! It was obvious the sushi was fresh- it melted in your mouth! I still can't get over the 50% off sushi menu that is offered all day everyday. Plus, the lunch menu looked like it had some great prices-- from bento boxes and hibachi. Those lunch prices are surprisingly also offered everyday of the week-- which is rare to find. Other restaurants typically only offer their lunch specials Monday through Friday. I've never used yelp before or even had an account, but after this experience, I thought it was time. My girlfriend and I had traveled to Nashville for the first time this weekend for valentines day. We were so excited to try some local food. Around 6:00pm we had called and made reservations for hibachi at 9pm because it was the only place with open spots and we were craving it. After ordering a $25 uber to travel 30 minutes to this place, we were seated at a hibachi table. 10 minutes later a worker comes up to us and says that they only have 2 chefs right now and that we have to wait 30-40 minutes for them to finish. We explained to him that we made reservations and he said there's nothing he can do. We considered leaving but after already spending so much money on an uber we decided to just wait. A server came up to us and took our order. After we ordered our food, we ordered a bottle of wine, and asked for 2 glasses to share. She came back with 2 glasses of wine but no bottle and said she already charged for them even though we ordered a bottle. A couple across the table even butted in to mention that they heard us order the bottle. After a I told her I fee uncomfortable paying for the the 2 glasses and an additional bottle, she said she would pay for the 2 glasses (but actually never did - it was on our check) Later our chef came around 10 (we got here at 8:55). Although we were already mad about the wait, he was very enjoyable and probably the only reason this place even gets a star. The food was fine although the rice was a little too salty. Finally, after receiving our check for the bill, my girlfriend went to the bathroom and our server was hovering over me the whole time trying to see the tip that I didn't leave her (there was already an 18% gratuity fee for the chef included on the bill). It was making me feel extremely uncomfortable. When my girlfriend got back from the bathroom, the server came up to me with my back to her and REACHED UNDER MY ARM AND SNAGGED THE CHECK saying thank you have a nice night. I said to her face that was rude and we left appalled of what just happened. In conclusion, we have never experienced such bad service in our lives. We were overcharged, felt extremely uncared for, and taken advantage of. This ruined our last night in Nashville and robbed us of a great night that could've been in downtown. read more

Twice I have ordered take out from here and they have fraudulently messed up the order to make it much cheaper. For example, I once ordered a shrimp hibachi dinner and there were two shrimps. Now, I have ordered through PostMates and I got my delivery and 3 of the items are missing which included (shrimp bento box, chicken tempura, and a crunch munch roll) instead I got two California rolls and one of the rolls I actually ordered (titan roll) . I will never go back here ever again. I paid $70 and all of it is wrong except the one roll which is not edible because it's smashed together like a soup. When you are in the restaurant they get the order right, but be very careful with a to go order they will intentionally mess it up to make a huge profit by leaving out Key expensive ingredients . This review is for the hibachi grill/sushi. We went this past Sunday. The hibachi was good. It's the first place we've found in TN that doesn't cook food in the yum-yum sauce (thank God!). The filet was very tender and flavorful. The chef was amusing and cooked it exactly how we ordered the food. The sushi was good. We got an Alaskan roll, California roll, salmon nigiri, and a tuna roll. It was fresh and tasted good. We also tried an order of shrimp tempura. They were good and I was pleased to find the shrimp deveined . The staff was friendly. They do add an 18 percent gratuity to any check at the hibachi table. That was fine for us since the staff was very much deserving of the tip. I would recommend if you're in the area. read more

I hate to do this because Ninki has been a favorite of ours since they opened. First and foremost, their food is excellent. We've had items from the sushi bar and hibachi and we've never been disappointed. Which is why I hate writing this, but after our experience tonight I felt it was necessary. We sat with a group at a hibachi table and at first things seemed ok, but then the gentleman making our meal started dropping things as he was throwing them. No, not just the spatula, but torches lit with fire. He dropped them multiple times on the hibachi table, but also a few times they fell on our actual table. A little too close for comfort. So we were a little on edge, but we thought maybe he's new...we'll give him the benefit of the doubt. A few minutes later he says something like "I drop eggs all the time". He then looked at my husband and told him he was going to throw a raw egg at him. We laughed the first time. He then repeated it and my husband told him not to. He then proceeded to hurl a raw egg at my husband, who shielded himself with his hands, and the egg splattered all over his clothes, the floor, and it also trailed over my Sushi on the way. He started laughing and we were horrified. It was an awkward 10 minutes after that while he finished cooking and we sat there stunned and with egg on the floor. The wait staff and manager were apologetic and brought saki, but then they brought us our full check (minus gratuity). I then explained that not only was my sushi covered in raw egg and inedible, but it had ruined our night. We ended up not paying and the manager was very nice. Went here because I had the LivingSocial coupon and I will say that I will be back. I did not even know that they have hibachi but I'm glad they did because a friend was not that into sushi (baffle my mind I know). Service was top notch. The Hibachi chef was very personable, nothing too flashy but with a drink in hand, the experience was great. I had the gyoza for appetizers, mahi mahi entree, and wasabi margarita to drink. The gyoza was good, typical but good. The mahi mahi was cooked well, I had it taken off the grill before it was overcooked, gotta be careful with fish. I also tried my friend's calamari steak. It was pretty awesome I may have to get that next time. The wasabi margarita was not overpowering with just a hint of wasabi at the end. I was definitely pleasantly surprised. The sushi menu was pretty extensive and not too pricey either. I ordered the Pretty Woman Roll (shrimp tempura on the inside with raw tuna on the outside). It was so tasty. My friend had the Volcano roll which came out on fire. A+++ for presentation. I will definitely come back especially on Feb 27, 2012 since it's their 1 yr anniversary so 50% off sushi roll baby. Visited today and was surprised there was a lunch menu til 3 pm! It was great. I think it may have been the owner serving us, but she was training someone, and was just so nice! She gave wine recommendations and recommended her Lemon Drop martini. I had the wine but a couple who was at our table said the Lemon Drop is fantastic so I'll try it next time. They do a 18% gratuity on all Hibachi tables, so you don't technically have to worry about tipping...but the lunch price is so low (all less than $11) and the service is so good you will probably consider it. read more

I am sorry to write a negative review of a Japanese restaurant that stays open a bit later than most on the weekends but I found the sushi to be disappointing. My female server was so sweet and the main sushi chef was very friendly. His younger assistant sushi chefs though were distracted and frankly visibly altered. Some other things show an odd glaring lack of care like dirty soy sauce bottles with cracked lids (also I thought the soy sauce tasted funny) and teapots that seem not recently cleaned yet used to serve tea. read more

Ninki is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in town! I highly recommend getting the bento box, as you get to try a few different things that way. Soup, sushi, vegetable tempura, edamame, etc. My favorite option for the bento box is with chicken katsu (fried chicken) and fried rice. The service is a little hit or miss, but everyone there is always polite. One of the servers even taught me how to use chopsticks properly, which was very kind of her! I got the sushi deluxe which comes with 9 pieces of nigiri and miso soup with a salad. Their red snapper was extremely tough that I didn't bother eating it. To be honest, I'm shocked this place has such good reviews. I work nearby and today was my first time. I got a salad with barely any lettuce that was drenched in dressing. I also got a 6 piece sushi roll that tasted super fishy. I sat next to a table of girls. One of them complained her vegetables were cold. Instead of the server offering to replace them, she argued with the customer. Then she sent 2 other waitresses over to inspect the plate. They both grabbed it. The girl told them she wasn't going to eat it and I don't blame her. I'm going to stick to my usual Sakura sushi in Bellevue and I won't be back to Ninki. Do yourself a favor and go there instead! I've been going to Ninki for the past 4 years and I its always been my go to Japanese spot, but the past three times me and my boyfriend have gone the experience has been awful. A few examples of how bad it has been recently: - We have to ask for waters, sauces, to go boxes, etc at least 3 times before we receive them. (We aren't asking for much just a water I ordered when I sat down, some hibachi ginger sauce, and to go box when I left) I shouldn't have to ask over and over again for the basics. - We also ordered a sweet tea, but instead of sweet tea refill we get served an additional water. - The restaurant will only serve you a lemon if you order a cocktail (the strangest thing - we were advised to bring our own lemons) - My boyfriend is allergic to shellfish after advising our waiter and him quoting us back (no shrimp got it) guess what was on his plate? Shrimp (thank god we saw it and his allergy is not as severe as others) - Impossible to get refills on any drinks - Our checks have been wrong every time - One waitress is scary and we are scared to ask for anything without getting a sassy remark - Food has been SO COLD every singe time ( I think it's been sitting there waiting to be taken to our table for 30 min) - Can we also point out again that they don't serve lemons with waters?? It's not like they don't have them, they just only supply them with fancy cocktails - Wild It's overall very unfortunate bc I use to love this place! Long time customer, used to enjoy going there. But the last two visits have been a disaster. Orders are SLOW to the table, which was baffling since there were few customers. Our server did not understand that I wanted my soup and sushi to come out together. My soup came out first. My sushi didn't come out until 15 minutes later. And a totally different server delivered the sushi. Our server disappeared. After a long 12 hour day, dinner should not be stressful. My husband and I decided tonight that we will no longer go there. With the amount of Japanese restaurants that are in Nashville, most are mediocre to... bleh with a few hidden gems. This place is unfortunately not one of the latter. There kitchen serves not only sushi, but also serves bento boxes and teppanyaki. I came here three times and based on those experiences, I would probably say that if you want food to arrive on a timely fashion, make sure you order their "hibachi" and that the rest of your table does so too. Let's start with the best thing that they do well: The NINKI bento boxes during the lunch special is extremely well priced for what they give you and the kitchen actually cooks up a pretty delicious (albeit thin) tonkatsu and tempura. My only complaint is that you have to get fried rice with the dish. The onion soup is actually not bad. The next best thing? The teppanyaki that they call "hibachi". It's nothing like a Benihana since they aren't as fun to watch. With the hibachi, you get the meat of your choice (beef, chicken, salmon, and shrimp and you can choose how well done you want the beef). I ordered the beef and even though they cooked it to medium rare as I had ordered, the beef they serve though is unfortunately not of great quality. On my first visit with my group, we ordered different items and for those of us that didn't order the teppanyaki, we waited so long that our friends who did had already finished eating. Our waitress though was quite helpful and did the best she could to keep us complacent. On our second visit, we all ordered hibachi and this worked out much better. I just have to say this was not a good experience. At all. We came here for a friends birthday dinner. We had to wait an hour for a table which wasn't a problem. But what was a problem is the fact that once we got seated, we watched the group directly in front of us leave, and watched the area get cleaned and watched the next group (hate to be that guy, but this particular group were less melanated than our group which I feel is important because this is the experience we got) get seated. By the time that we had already been there for almost 30 minutes the group who was seated after us had soups, salads, and a chef. We had water. The waitress also was blatantly ignoring what we were saying. We had to ask for a sweet tea three times. We finally got some service and there was hair under one of the sushi rolls and the waiter had an attitude putting down the soups and so her thumb dipped in the soups!!!! So we ended up requesting a new server. They didn't have any carbonated drinks(which I can't fault them for, but again, part of the experience). We all wanted to try the sake tasting and couldn't do that because they were missing one of the sakes (which isn't their fault, but again part of the experience) When we asked for a manager the waitress argued with us asking why we want to see a manager and we had to request the manager NUMEROUS times. The manager came and said he understood and that he would discount the food. Cool. So we get a chef(he was cool, not much of a performer, but we didn't even care for the performance aspect at this point) and got our food, only 2 people out of 7 asked for mushrooms, but 4 people out of 7 were given mushrooms, and by the time we are half way through the food cooking process, the people who came in after us were already finished and leaving. When we got our checks they weren't discounted. They then discounted the drinks at a 30 percent discount, which was only 1.50 on one of the bills from our group. And my the time we got to go boxes and got the checks sorted out, another group was seated in front of us. So we seen 3 total groups of people get rotated and ended up being there for THREE HOURS total. And they add an automatic 18 percent tip to the bill which I just don't feel like was deserved. We will not ever be going back. One star only because the new server, the chef, and the food were good. But overall experience was a no for me. read more

Miso Soup: - Tasted like dishwater flavored with some miso and salt - Not that warm - Tiny pieces of tofu and seaweed, seemed like they were trying to cut back on costs - Overall, not that great Agedashi Tofu - Rip off for $6.95 with only 3 small cubes of tofu - Was way too hot, almost burned my tongue - Sauce is bland and the tofu was soggy - Not worth the money Crunchy Shrimp Roll - The presentation was great - But just tasted like tempura with that sweet thick soy sauce Bento Box - The BEST thing about getting lunch here, a LOT of food for about $9 (without tax) - Only complaint about this was the tempura, which was too heavy - With the amount of food given by the bento box, could take half home and have another lunch Service was bad, and they only completed the bare minimum. tl;dr if you want fast, okay-priced Asian food this place is alright. This place was a pretty standard hibachi. The food was good and the chef was fun.i had the veggie hibachi and definitly enjoyed it. L I came with a big group and they were able to accommodate us, no problem. I don't know if I would go here regularly, but it was nice for a special occasion with a large group! read more

Sushi chef was excellent. Very nice cuts and a very well curated sushi regular option. Service was just okay.

Get the bento box. Comes with dumplings, veggie & shrimp tempura, rice, soup, salad, and choice of teriyaki or hibachi.

Disappointing food quality and customer service from management. Ordered 3 tempura udon but broth was so salty we couldn't eat it even after asking for additional hot water to dilute. Told management and they offered to take it off the receipt but later comes back with only 50% off cuz we ate some of the tempura. Why offer to take it off in the first place??? They even admitted the udon broth was store bought from factory not made in house. So disappointed in the whole experience... read more
