We visited this market recently and really loved the energy of it. There are the traditional tents…read morefilled with fresh fruits and veggies; but there are also tents with beautiful clothing, luggage, handmade items, etc. I'm traveling the world with just a small backpack, so I'm not doing much shopping these days, but the food items I bought were fresh and delicious. I loved that everything was put in paper bags, not plastic. I read that the market has been around since the 9th century, which I loved knowing. A short walk down the hill brings you to beautiful neighborhoods with cobblestone roads and the huge cathedral. It's a lovely area overall.

You can find everything from brilliant pies (Raven's Den in particular), awesome cheese (Lincolnshire Poacher and others), fresh veggies (Earthworks and others), fresh fish and meats... not to mention cupcakes and other sweet treats! We usually start by getting a coffee for the husband from the vendor with the mobile coffee bar (the machine is in the back of his van), and then wander the markets and end at the Merchant for a cup of tea for me. As long as there is a rainbow biscuit on the way even our toddler is happy.

Back in its heyday when I was at 6th form college in the late 80s and we used to bunk off class to…read morego to the market it may have got 5 stars, there was life and vibrancy as well as hundreds of stalls, customers from across all walks of life. During my two most recent visits the number of stalls is approximately a third of what it used to be, the customer demographic is more limited now and small changes for the worse have taken place. One example is before there was a large meat wagon from which the butcher who doubled up as a comedian would offer customers fantastic deals on carrier bags full of meat, plus then he'd add more to the first five people to put their hands up. Now it's a smaller meat wagon and the younger butcher just doesn't have the same comedy patter or authority/generosity to pile more meat into the carrier bags of those on tight budgets purchasing from here. What could be a two hour walk through looking at stuff my last two visits I've seen everything in twenty minutes. Free parking which is useful so giving it three stars.

There are several stalls selling Argos or Next catalogue returns and a few selling electrical items at cut prices. Add to this the obligatory mobile phone unlocking guys and the short date food stalls and you will have a good idea of what's there. Pre Christmas it always used to have a fab stall selling perfume gift sets but this was missing on the last few occasions I have been.Worth a trip just for a look .Parking is abundant but it gets very busy near Christmas time.
