For 6 years since my son was born we have a family tradition to ride the Christmas train of lights and I encourage my son to give back the night we take the train by handing out mini candy canes to kids and adults on the train-wish happy holidays. Something that Santa use to do as an experience for the kids. This is something I personally do to teach my son 1x a year on this train. This keeps him from being bored. Which this ride is boring for social and active boys. He looks forward to this yearly. It makes him productive, engaged, and while dressed up in a suit and tie excited to go yearly just to give back. Every year those 6 years I pay for 1 family 3-5 people $30+ Each who have never experienced this ride to join us. This year, the most appalling experience from one staff member who must of had the rule of ruining 3 kids (my son plus 2 1st timers on the train) christmas. After Santa has completed each train the children was wishing everyone happy holidays and handing out mini candy canes until we entered the "buy me but don't touch" rail car store. The kids were being barked at by this older grey haired lady for the kids to not play with any of the toys for sale .... like a candy aisle in a grocery store at eye level tease!. Then she had to rudely refused the candy canes and gossiping to another mid aged woman to refuse it too and told us we can not do that. Meanwhile we have done this for 6 years straight and this night we got multiple excuses as to why. None of them were the same until they began radioing everyone on the train. I have volunteered with my boyfriend to decorate and fix the trains.... I support the value of restoring old trains. The cost is a huge expense yearly for me, but I do it to teach my son to give back during the holidays and spread the experience to people who have never been on the train before. I have brought my parents of the kids I fostered including every kid I have fostered that I had in my home during the holidays, friends that relocated here from China and Africa that just moved to Fremont, and even my own family. My mother who passed away in 2016 from pancreatic cancer joined us every year to take my son Who I adopted at birth up and down the aisles. Once the lady rudely made her mission to stop this spreading of joy..... it ruined the 3 kids opportunity to give back and our entire Christmas spirit so much to the point that I will no longer volunteer for them, Resign up for my railway membership, and support this expensive endeavor for the bitter staff that ruin our family tradition and ruin the heart of giving back in my sons heart. I expressed how that was not right to the gossipy rude old woman and expressed that I will not continue my railway membership nor come on this train again..2x times..or spread the support for this train ever again. We walked back to our seats and arrived into Sunol... I expressed prior I wanted to talk to the station agent DONNA who I have dealt with over my 10 years with the train ride and assisting my boyfriend in volunteering electrical tasks. Staff refused to tell which station she was at and later seeing her outside she Refused to come aboard and no staff. A conductor with an accent on the train for only 4 years began nicely at first telling me I can't pass out the mini candy canes and when I expressed how appalling this experience was and that I will not be coming back on the train....put his body over the seat and in so called "nicer firmer threating voice" as he stood over me while I was seated and told me again after I stated what I had to say that I can't give the candy canes away. It was a nice way to bully me. The mess people leave from all the food others bring on is acceptable, but not spreading the gift of giving..it was stated that volunteers don't want to clean up candy from the floor/ stick Santa.we walked the train following the cane giving... saw nothing on the floor laying on it or crushed. Staff stated that I can't get off in Sunol to talk to staff and I told staff I want to talk to DONNA at Niles when I arrived... only to find the station office closed during peak time for the next train boarding.
PROS: train nicely decorated in / out But same every year / inside seats comfortable. Nice scenic day ride up and night of train lights on the way back. Use to be our family holiday tradition. Food for sale like cookies and cocoa priced right.
CONS: expensive / walking the train is crowded /. Bathrooms always have problems / kids running on train pushing thru halls (No staff assisting) / No Xmas light along the railway for kids to look at / Santa briefly walks by / They do nothing to entertain the 1.5 hrs train ride for kids so they run the train and jumping on the seats bored out of their mind while spilling hot cocoa all over the vintage train seats. /every person I paid for said "nice but just boring ride" & glad to experience free. Never came back. Thanks for our last 5 yrs but this BYE! read more
