We're not exactly running low on hairdresser's/barber shops in the local area and whilst there's…read moreplenty in Formby to keep me coiffured until the end of time, I recently decided to take a trip to Paul's in Birkdale village on the recommendation of a couple of my friends who had been going there a while. On first impressions, the shop itself is quite small and narrow but instead of this feeling claustrophobic, it actually feels quite cosy (well, as cosy as a man could feel sitting in a glorified dentist's chair whilst another man touches your head for half an hour). The barbers there are skilled and friendly enough to be chatty and easy to talk to whilst not going overboard with small talk. The cuts there are standard barber fare as you would expect but are done with a precision that left me very satisfied both with my haircut and with the price, which was very reasonable at a fraction of the price you'd pay for a stylist in a salon. A great place to go if you need a quick cut or trim whilst you're in the area.

Yes, they do both specialise in hair care, but you're not likely to find a young good-looking female running her fingers through your hair with aloe vera shampoo in this establishment. Think more a middle-aged man squirting your head with water from one of those spray bottles, at a push. Despite this, Trimmers is actually a very pleasant barbers if you want a pretty simple, basic haircut - think short back and sides rather than an undercut or a restyling of your 80s mullet. The barbers there are very good at what they do and friendly enough, without annoying you too much like some hairdressers can do, and for the price they charge they offer great value for money. I recommend this place if you just want a basic, simple haircut for a fraction of the price in the salons.

An appropriately solid, masculine name for this barber's shop out on the edge of the town centre -…read moregoing for a 'trim' sounds a little bit more macho than getting your hair 'done' (which feels as though it implies, hair rollers, those little strips of foil and a bucket-load of acrid smelling product). When I was a whippersnapper this was where everyone came to get their do's sorted out but of late it seems to just be the old or, like myself, the old at heart. I suppose now with all these fashionable youngsters coming up through the ranks, buying their own cool clothes, being all competent with technology and comfortable in social situations and stuff they don't want to come to a more basic hairdressing establishment such as this. Jealous, me? Pfft, where did you get THAT idea! Anyway - it's all a bit basic but there's no need to book and if you want your mop buzzed around the sides or just tidied up then this is definitely the place to go. They're friendly and the prices are very competitive (you could have 6 or 7 haircuts here for the price of one at Toni & Guy - I don't quite know why you would want to, but still). Just a note; don't be put off by one of the staffers lack of hair, he does know what he's doing.
