This Trimmers is located at the heart of Formby in the village and specialises in women's hairdressing. However, this branch also offers men's hairdressing and styling and this is why I visited (I'm not a woman, in case you hadn't guessed already). The shop itself is bright and split in two so that the men and women are divided by a mirrored wall, ensuring that any man who is self-conscious about getting his hair cut in a salon need not question his sexuality as he can just sit there and pretend he isn't in the company of a group of gossipping women. As it turns out, the divide isn't needed as you are made to feel relaxed and comfortable whilst there, helped by the relaxing shampoo treatments on offer by the talented workers there. On the each of the occasions I have been there, I have left happy enough with the finished product (I'm never completely happy with my haircuts, ever) and although the prices can be quite steep depending on the level of stylist you use, its nothing unreasonable when put in comparison with other local hairdressers.

Instead, the stylist nearly ripped half my hair out attempting to comb it (god knows how - I have generally lank, straight hair) and then announced that I must've done all sorts to my head as my hair was like wire wool. At this point, my patience was thin, and then I asked her what she was planning to do to condition and treat my hair before she trimmed it. She told me she would just slap some conditioner on and leave it to soak in. Bloody marvellous, I thought. And that is literally what she did. I got a head full of sloppy conditioner, and then they put me under a heater. Now, I may not be a hair expert, but I'm pretty sure drying conditioner onto your head isn't the best way to go about things. After leaving me baking for about half an hour whilst she gabbed to a colleague, my attentive stylist came back, and after rinsing out the caked-on conditioner, proceeded to cut half my hair off, claiming it was 'beyond rescuing'. I can't remember how much they charged me for this delightful experience, and it was a good few years ago now, but the salon is still going strong so I must only be one of a few disgruntled customers!

It is the kind of place which gives you the confidence to return to as you know they will continue to provide quality as time goes by. They offer cut and finish, high and low lights, full colours, blow dries, trims, and everything else you can expect a stylish hair salon to offer. They have a range of prices, starting at junior stylist and leading up to director and they ate very popular locally. But to me they are middle of the road, a few friends used to get their hair cut here and I never saw anything special. There is a lot of local competition too, with Jumi and Andrew Collinge based just down the road, as well as a host of others!

Their clientelle is primarily older ladies, so you need to be clear with whoever is cutting your hair as to what it is you want them to do to your hair. This is now my official hairdressers; I love it!…read more Retro is not far from my home or old school, and it's been open for a good few years now, it has always come very highly recommended and yet, until yesterday, I was a Retro virgin. I needed my barnett sorting in preparation for a party and thought I'd try somewhere new; I went along to Retro, having booked an appointment earlier that day, and as I sat waiting for my stylist I began to worry that the outcome would be disastrous and my terrible new do would ruin the photographs of the evening's celebrations. However the professional manner of my hairdresser, Rebbecca, as she discussed my desired style and how she would create it, settled my nerves a little. In under an hour I had had a consultation, had my hair washed, (with the most divine products; the shampoo smells gorgeous0 layered and styled with a new full fringe, and blow dried beautifully with big bouncy curls. My hair is very long and thick and in my experience, hairdressers tire or simply bore when styling it, but Rebbecca was patient and did a great job; I was thrilled with the final result. The services are very reasonably priced as well; £22.50 for mine. My only complaint is the somewhat hazardous salon chairs! The protruding foot rests caused a couple of trips and a near concussion as another client took a tumble into the metal stair rail!

Its a bright, modern salon, with young stylists, but friendly and welcoming nontheless, you wont feel initimidated or out of date. Ive used a couple of stylists here and they have all been good - my favourite is Annmarie, who is a great colourist, and takes her time to make sure you are happy with her suggestions before she starts. I just wish she worked Saturdays! Expect to pay about £30 for a cut and blow, and approx £50 for half head foils and cut.
