The self-styled gay 'superclub' that is synonymous with Birmingham's gay scene, Nightingales has recently undergone a relaunch of sorts following financial troubles that were well-documented in local press. It's back though, bigger and bolder than ever and flying the Pride flag high for the city's gay quarter. Continuing to offer three floors of music on its biggest nights (Thursday and Saturday are the big ones if you're planning a messy one), the club is easily still the most popular gay club in the city and offers an eclectic mix of music - from house to urban to flat-out cheese, there's a wide choice of tunes to dance to. And dance you will! Whether you're gay or straight, you're sure to have a ball - just leave the attitude at the door and take your pick of floors. The middle level is great for a sit down and chat, but the main room is where your pink pound is probably best spent as the club regularly offers late night Saturday entertainment (more like early Sunday morning) in the form of high profile pop acts or the latest talent show rejects. It's all pretty tongue-in-cheek, and the unisex loos further enforce the fact that this is a place where everyday boundaries are blurred in order to bring folk together in a fun, high camp, peaceful manner. I don't ever write complaints but I'm completely disgusted. My friends and I were at this venue for an after party when my friend has a disosoative episode which is linked to anxiety. She was conscious but not verbally responding or moving. We couldn't call an Ambulance as she wasnt responding. After about ten minutes of our paramedic arriving, the manager of the venue approached with about five security guards. They raised their voices at us and told us off for 'opening the door and letting someone in'. That 'someone' being a paramedic who was there to help someone in need. They said we should have let staff know. 1) why didn't you have staff on the front door? 2) how can you shout at me for calling a paramedic for a friend and YOUR customer that needs medical attention? They continued to shout at us for letting someone into the building which THEY should have been guarding. Also five members of staff walked past us and didn't think to ask if we were okay. One of the guards tried telling us to leave the building to which we refused as we have a duty of care towards our friend. We explained this firmly but professionally to then be kicked out for 'eyerolling'. They pushed me out away from my friend in need, also kicking Dani out a minute later. Not even that, but they kept insisting that she was on drugs. "Just get her to drink some orange juice, she's obviously down the ket hole." They all laughed at someone in a mental health crisis. Our friend Reccarnei called us to update us but said she had to put the phone down because she was going to get angry, to which they replied "I'd like to see you try, bitch." These men should not be working with people, especially vunerable people. It's completely unprofessional and dangerous. We will also be reporting the staff involved and taking this further. If you'd have asked me to review this place a few years ago, it would definitely not have got 5 stars. However, it has evolved so much over the last few years and has rightfully reclaimed it's spot as the figurehead of the Birmingham gay scene! It is a huge venue with something for everyone. The ground floor is vast with a spacious dance floor, bar, stage and plenty of seating. The music is current dance/pop/chart with a bit of everything thrown in for good measure. I have spent many a night twirling around like a boss. The downstairs also host some fabulous drag queens and often had some big name performers, drag and otherwise. The middle floor is pure cheese and games and general fluff which, when one is in the right mood, can be insanely fun. Next to here is the r'n'b and hip hop room where you can be sure to let go! Upstairs, you will find many a reveller skanking to the sound of bassline, myself often included. Each floor also has sufficient outdoor space for smoking which is unusual for a club of it's size. I find the prices here to be reasonable and have never had a problem with any of the staff. They are all darlings. Recently, the Nightingale has introduced some fresh concepts such as an LGBT film night, where the downstairs is transformed into a cinema and you can watch a classic LGBT film and bring your own snacks. I went to the first and it was brilliant. I look forward to seeing how this venue continues to progress and am grateful to have it part of Birmingham's scene. read more

The nightingale is a great night out, sometimes entry can seem a little bit sleep however this is normally only the case for they have a performer on stage. There is a coat store as soon as you walk in which is reasonable and very safe. The club itself is divided into 3 floors playing a range of types of music with a smoking area on each floor. There is also bars in each floor with relatively quick service. The club is open on Thursdays when it has student night with a range of drinks offers, Friday's and Saturdays where you will often find a former xfactor or similar performer on stage around midnight. read more

The Nightingale is Birmingham's gay 'superclub', at the heart of the gay village. I've not always been a fan but lately I've been won over. The Gale is usually where my friends and I end up after a staggering through the bars of Hurst St. on a Saturday night. It is one of very few gay club options in Birmingham. It calls itself a gay 'superclub', and I suppose in terms of size it is. There's three floors, each offering different music, as well as a garden area at the back. The music differs depending on which night you visit but generally the ground floor is where you can dance the night away to pop classics and chart stuff, whilst on the first floor you can catch the club's resident hostess, Miss Marty, along with big old chunks of musical cheese (including ABBA mashups). On the top floor you'll find more house and dance music for the real party people. The large ground floor is where most of the special events are focused. There's a stage area used for special guests and performances. I've witnessed (not always intentionally) all sorts of 'special' nights at the Gale, from acts miming their hearts out on stage to dodgy and pretty uncomfortable foam party strip contests. Some I wish I hadn't been at. Lately, however, I've been to some really fun events, including performances by famous drag queens from the USA and drag contests. Last weekend Adam S. and I saw Detox, an American drag queen, perform. She was excellent and the atmosphere was great. In short, the events are a mixed bag. In terms of price the Gale is pretty reasonable. Usually it's £5 entry on a Saturday night (more for some events). Drinks are reasonable and on Thursdays there's a student night offering loads of £1 drinks. The gay scene in Birmingham definitely suffers from a lack of choice in terms of bars and clubs, particularly in comparison to other UK cities with large gay communities like Manchester and Brighton. However, having graced (not always gracefully) the dancefloors of many gay venues from the north to the south coast, I can say I am glad we have the Gale in Birmingham - it's a beast of a club which offers 3 floors of music and which, when busy, can be really lively and fun. read more

The proclaimed 'gay mecca' of Birmingham, Nightingales offers three floors of old classics alongside, well practically the current UK top 40 at the time. Situated in the prime gay area of the city, 'Gales' as it is known welcomes, all warps of life, gays, straight people, the lot. Working at the Hippodrome theatre, nights out are often suggested, with Gales the likely destination. As a 19 year old straight male, I can honestly say that I have had some great times there, mainly thanks to the relaxed atmosphere and the cheap drink prices. The bar offers a huge range of great deals, which can leave you worse for ware come the next morning, but at the time, seems like the only option! The three different floors offer various types of music, from cheesy classic, to modern tunes and old school dance. There really is something for everyone at Gales, whether straight or gay, It's definitely worth a visit. read more

And one to remember. 3 Different dance floors, a middle lounge for cabaret acts, drag queens, relaxed seating for chit-chat and a nice open back garden, the perfect place for that smoke, or just to mingle if you don't smoke. Most Saturday nights are booked with acts from X-factor finalists, to drag acts and other musical entertainers! The Gale is always popular, regardless whether your gay or not. You get discounted entry most nights before 12, and Thursday's are popular with students. A good variety of music from dance, cheesy pop and heavy banging floor fillers, this has something for everyone. Coat service on entry, a trendy diner on the middle floor if your feeling peckish half way through your night, and a friendly bouncer team, you'll feel safe here. You can book a Booth if your partying to something special, and different levels of membership are also available if you prefer becoming a regular. Give this a go, it's addictive. read more

Nightingales is a 'super club', so I'm told - cramming room upon room full of happy dancing people and entertaining them not just with DJ sets of all musical styles but some of the finest live music the world has ever seen. Remember Tiffany? She's played there. And so has Luciana of Bodyrox fame. Right Said Fred are due there in December along with X Factor's Daniel Evans. OK, the last one isn't so impressive but you get the idea. I've performed in the lower bar twice and had a great time - they honestly have a better sound system for live music in there than all the pub venues I've ever played at, the staff are way friendlier and more knowledgable and there's a really lovely dressing room upstairs. And sometimes drag queens share it with you! Nightingales is a gay club, yes, but they put on lots of more inclusive nights and often students from various universities in the area get bussed in to rip it up on the dancefloor, get wasted and throw up on their own shoes. The 'gale is one of my favourite places to go on a night out in Birmingham, and I always make a point of going there when I'm up in the midlands visiting friends and family, because I am guaranteed to have a great night out. The Nightingale has been around for a good 20 years, I first went there about 10 years ago as a college student. It wasn't anything really amazing back then, but over the past couple of years it really has had a good turn around, probably due to the whole place having a a bit of a makeover and the booking of some impressive liv acts. I'm a massive fan of RuPaul's Drag Race and it's almost a given that the majority of successful contestants from the show will make an appearance at the Gale at some point. Just a month ago I met one of my fave Queen's from the show, 'Latrice Royale' as I'd won a competition that the club was running. It really is a 'super club' - and as someone that has lived in Brighton, Britain's 'gay capital' for the best part of a decade, I honestly think that Birmingham has got a scene to rival that of Brighton's with a club like the gale. There are 3 floors - the ground floor tends to play a lot of pop, chart, and cheese and will also play host to whatever guest is performing that night. On the middle floor there is a cabaret style area, where the resident Drag Queens tend to perform. The top floor - which is my personal favourite - is dance heavy, playing a lot of deep house, and has me dancing well into the small hours!! Couple this with some large heated outdoor smoking areas and you have a lot of room to go and play. The staff that work at the gale are great, all lovely lads that I have met so far, and the 'door whore' are always fabulous. Gay or Straight, I honestly think you would be hard pressed to find fault at the gale. read more

I have visited this club a few times but the first time I went on a proper night out there was a Thursday night. With it being a gay club, I wasn't too bothered by going in there as a few of my friends are gay/lesbian scene as i'm straight. The people and people who work their were friendly, the music was pretty good. Upstairs played all cheesy stuff. Downstairs was more of the house/r&b stuff. So if you like guilty pleasures then i'm sure you like it here :) . I remember they had a drag queen, reminded me of butlins, don't know why. The drinks were a reasonable price pretty cheap, its good for students too, regarding if your straight/gay aslong as you behave yourself they don't mind :) Only downturn was I met a girl in there, she knew i was straight and she cleared me out, kept buying her drinks and she did a runner towards end of the night never saw her again. The door staff are absolutely brilliant, they are the reason this club is so good as, they keep out the potential trouble makers and they will help you if your in need of help. All the staff and Manager are deserving of this good review. I've been coming here for years! There's a good choice of music on three floors. Known as a superclub the gale has been around a long time. It has occupied various sites around the city in its long history but seems to have found its most success in its present location. The club went into administration last year. A strange affair as it had been doing well. it seems the holding company had tried to put their fingers into too many pies and took out massive loans to fund other ventures which simply didn't take off. (The Angel for example) Alas Lawrence Barton(owner of loft and The Village) and some financial backers stepped in and saved the club from going the same way as the other gay superclub (Route) and standing empty for years. The club has re-launched with its weekly Saturgay event, the owners keen to re-establish the venue as a dedicated gay venue. Recently they have announced that membership will be free to join but with a range of membership packages with varying annual tarrifs. In with the membership is promo offers, que jumping and dependant on membership package access to VIP areas. Don't panic you don't have to be a member, however all that means is a longer que and full price admission. (Between £8 and £10) Various types of music played, something for all really. Drinks are reasonable and certainly compare well to the likes of Broadstreets clubs and the nearby Arcadian. Weekly live music see's minor celebs attend usually X factor or BGT rejects but fun none the less. A great night out! read more
