Nico's was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. My husband and I shared our dishes, and they even went out of the way to portion and plate the dishes separately. Impeccable service! The sopa de nata was absolutely divine. The egg-type crepe was so unlike anything I've ever had and paired perfectly with the tomato based sauce. I really enjoyed the mole too. We ordered the turkey mole, and it had such a dynamic taste. Each bite had new flavors and was quite strong but just the right amount of strong that it's not overwhelming. It was wonderful! Amazing. This was our first meal in CDMX and I'm so glad we made the trip. (It's about twenty to thirty minutes north of the center of the city.) We ordered a lot. Guac, Caesar salad, sopa seca de natas, tortilla soup, pulpos a la Antigua (octopus in its own ink), enmoladas de mole negro. Everything was excellent, but we were particularly blown away by the salad (unlike any other Caesar salad I've ever eaten -- more about the egg/oil/mustard than cheese, for example -- and apparently the Caesar was invented in Mexico?), the sopa seca de natas (almost like a tomato casserole, or a "Mexican lasagna," as my wife called it), and the octopus (although this was more me than my wife -- if you love ink you'll love this). This was a lot -- we were very full at the end. Even beyond the deliciousness of the food, it's a fun atmosphere with a friendly staff and a live band. This would be high up on my list of places to recommend people coming to CDMX, and we'll almost certainly be back on our next visit. read more

Wow this was one of the best brunches that I have had in my life. Every dish should be experienced with fiends and turned into a taco!! My favorites were the chicharrones con salsa Verde and the guac. The guacamole is table side and made to spice preference. Also the salsa that they bring out is out of this world's!! I highly recommend the salsa Verde which we got an entire bowl of. If you are feeling frisky, definitely perise over to the mobile mescal bar and get a drink. It will change your life!! I Get it....it is a bit of a hike to get to the place but come on...pay the extra pesos from Roma or wherever you are staying or living and go bc it is so f'ing worth it. Of course, it looks like it is something out of an El Chapo documentary as it is certainly not cutting edge by any stretch of the imagination (aesthetically speaking) but it is just straight up killer authentic Mexican food. Don't come here for lunch! Do not make the mistake I made. Breakfast is what this place is known for. I would have given this place 4 stars but the service was pretty bad and the menu was very limited for some reason. The breakfast experience is apparently much better and the reason to come to this restaurant in the first place. But the food was not bad some of it was even good. The table side guacamole was great and very fresh I would recommend this whether for breakfast or lunch. We also ordered a green mole which was pretty good. The simple fact was that our dining experience was not a great because they didn't let us order off the breakfast menu which has the best dishes this place is known for. It seemed a little ridiculous that they wouldn't let us order the items because they had all the ingredients they needed. Old school place with great food. I came here for breakfast and really enjoyed my Nico Enchiladas. It comes with the famous green sauce, covered with the local cheese. It was one of the tastiest things I've had in Mexico City. Would love to try their dinner menu, unfortunately it was quite a hike from where we were staying. Maybe next time. To be fair I would give 4.5 stars. Pro tip: you have to get at lease one Spanish menu even if you don't speak Spanish. There are dishes on that menu that are not on the English menu! We had an excellent meal at Nicos.the service was impeccable. The mezcal cart has many fine offerings. The siniestro tempestate was particularly fantastic! The tables use guacamole was delicious. The soap seca de Maya's was awesome as well. It was almost like a Mexican lasagna with pulled chicken and a beautiful chile sauce. The entrees were equally delicious. The pollo Amarillo was spectacular. Chicken falling off the bone accompanied by crisp sautéed vegetables, homemade tortillas, and a deep, complex, fruity sauce made from Oaxaca Chiles. The kampachi with cuitlacoche mole was spectacular as well. The fish was perfectly cooked. The mole was deep, dark, earthy with a little heat that was easily tolerated. Only drawback was the corn served over top was kind of chewy. My guess is that the corn was prepared perfectly, but I'm used to corn from the U.S. which is super sweet and tender. Nico's is one of those musts in Mexico City. I love the atmosphere - it is very much a family style restaurant with a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Nico's has been around for a while and for a reason - their food is excellent! The staff is very friendly and really accommodating. As for the food, just wow. We started our meal with some sopa de tortilla which they serve to you from this beautiful pot. The sopa was really good - not as thick as I like it but very tasty. I usually get it without chicharrón which is not my favorite. For the main dish the highlight was definitely the mole. I prefer having he mole with the chicken breast. It was a great quantity and quality. The mole was rich and the flavor really full and complex. Both chefs at Jaso recommended this place so of course I had to made a detour. They warned me this restaurant looked like an office so I wasn't expecting much in terms of atmosphere. But the place was extremely vibrant and the host seemed to be really good friends with the diners. I ordered the black bean soup and loin of snook. The soup had good flavors but the beans were undercooked. The fish on the other hand was cooked perfectly. I cannot get the flavor of that chili oil out of my head.. Plantains underneath were a nice touch. For dessert I got the chocolate mousse cake. There is nothing like this in the US. Chocolate desserts in Mexico are spicy but also light, nothing like that dense brownie stuff up here. Service was such a delight. Average or below average for México City. I stopped by here for breakfast with a friend and to drink we had the hot chocolate (she had hers with water and mine was with milk). We also shared chilaquiles (without the meat) and molletes. The meal was underwhelming. The chilaquiles were very basic (probably my least favorite chilaquiles so far,!lacked flavor) and so did the molletes. As I reflect on two weeks of incredible dining experiences in Mexico City, the restaurant that stands out most and that I most want to return to is Nicos. Our dinner blew us away with both the flavors and the friendliness, the love you could feel in the cooking and in the air of this humble single-room venue. This is the love your Mexican grandma cooked with, especially the Pollo en Mole (the best mole I've ever tasted, and yes we ate at Pujol and Quintonil), and the Lengua en Cuñete, both of which had me savoring with my eyes closed. The guacamole, prepared table-side in its cart, was also the best I've ever tasted, and the love only grew with the generous tastings from the mezcal cart. The service was impeccable! I recall it took 45 minutes before we got our appetizers. However, once the ball got rolling the service was very good. While deciding on entrees, someone came and assisted in English. My daughter who travels frequently to Mexico City told us that we MUST eat at this restaurant. We did not make a reservation , bad idea . The restaurant was booked solid , called in the strange in between space between dinner and lunch and got lucky ! The menu is in Spanish and very few waiters speak any English , we were lucky , the manager who was very helpful spoke English . They start with tortilla chips and a plateful of salsas which were nothing like anything I had had before except for the tomatillo sauce . I had a shrimp tostada , very flavorful and different , followed by octopus in mole negro , tender pieces of octopus in a dark sauce studded with pine nuts ,olives and peppers , served with warm tortillas and rice with corn . My husband had an encrusted soft shell crab with two different moles , amazing . I wanted to try a light dessert, took me a while but managed to order a fruit and light custard one which was perfect since I had binged on so much food ! It is a drive to get there but so worth it . Old fashion feel to the white table cloth and attention to details , slow , unhurried pace of eating and savoring delicious food . One of the better meals I've had. As many have noted, Nicos has a very home style atmosphere: not a ton of decor or glitz, but what they lack in style almost endears them to you: because they're not trying to be something they're not. They're friendly folks offering high quality food at reasonable prices. It will be more expensive than a typical meal in Mexico DF but for the quality of food they are purveying, it would be 2x this much in California or NY. I opted for the guacamole in the molcajete. Absolutely delicious. To mix it up, they also have some phenomenal salsas that you can dip your chips in too. The Chille en nogada was a filling and flavorful meal. Very rich sauce and combined with the figs and pine nuts, it offers a sharp contrast to the Chille flavor. I'd get it again. It's worth a stop if you make it to Mexico DF, just keep in mind it's packed so you might want to make reservations. read more

I had really high expectations for this acclaimed Mexican restaurant. We arrive at an odd hour (transition between breakfast and lunch service) service was slow and not attentive enough, had to ask for the menu in more than twice. Food was lame, and lacked the flavor everyone is taking about. Chalupas were really bad, since the protein was overcooked and dry. Pescadillas were nice, just that. Sopa de natas, since everyone posts pictures about this dish, I was expecting to have my mind blown away... sadly it didn't happen. Lengua al cañete, probably the worst way I have eaten Beef Tongue, and believe me I love Beef Tongue. My review somehow deleted itself while trying to edit in the app so I wont repeat but this was a great meal for our spontaneous Thanksgiving in Mexico so I'm rounding up. We even had turkey mole! The service was great thanks to one really friendly server who patiently explained various dishes to us and even sent over a complimentary table side roasted tomato salsa dish after the apple amuse. His recommendations were great and they prepared sample dishes for us to pick a mole flavor. The "dry soup" was quite tasty although it reminded me of lasagna. The octopus stew was also pretty interesting since I had never had it prepared that way. Overall this was probably our favorite restaurant in Mexico from a value, quality, and experience perspective. It was pretty out of the way to get to but I'm glad we made the effort. It's nothing fancy but the ambiance is fine for a moderately priced meal (from a tourist perspective). They close pretty early at night so we ended up being among the last people in the place but they never rushed us. read more

I went to Mexico City for four nights so didn't have many nights to work with to try all of the food places I wanted to go to.  Nico's was one of my first choices and I'm really happy we went there. The food was exceptional. It struck just the right balance between creative execution and the use of local ingredients that felt homey and authentic. For example, we had a tetela made with three different kinds of corn that tasted like earthy maize in a very special way.  I love mole and I had one of the best moles I have ever had as an entree.  My girlfriend had an appetizer that was kind of like an anchovy taco that she loved.  Our servers didn't speak the best English so, if you don't speak Spanish, it might be difficult to get thorough explanations of what you're eating.  They will explain the basics, but might not be able to give you the specific breakdowns of how a dish is prepared that can add to the experience.  That said, I speak decent Spanish and it was fine for us. An added bonus is that, while a lot of the well-known restaurants in Mexico City were full of tourists, the clientele at Nicos was mainly Mexican.  I'm obviously a tourist myself so going to a restaurant with a lot of tourists doesn't bother me that much. But it was nice to go to a different neighborhood that felt a bit more genuine (at least on the night we went there).  In sum. even if you only have a few nights in Mexico City, I would definitely recommend coming here. I had reservation at 1pm and the service was not ready until 1:30pm. Even at 1:30pm, service staff were still doing a tablecloth in front of my table. One of dish I asked was not available that day or that time when I was ordering. When I was finally served a glass of water, I found a insect in it. I remarked it to a service staff, but then the waiter forgot to bring the new glass. I asked again and when I got new jar of water, I found a insect again. Food was okay. The appetizer we ordered(some kind of gorditas) was fairly dry and tasteless. Guac is meant to be made in front you in molcajete, but funnily they makes it with spoon and fork. Although we only speak English, they went out of their way to answer our questions and make us comfortable; we probably spoke to everyone on the wait staff!
