Bubble tea is as delicious as it is addictive, and there is no better place to sample its sweet…read moretaste than at The Tea Cottage. The no-frills, non-descript interior of wooden chairs and tables are accented by the crates of fresh fruits and boxes of syrup bottles that line the walls. Behind the counter there are usually two server working furiously to keep up with the demand and lineups. But what exactly is "bubble tea" you ask? Don't let the name fool you. Many of the drinks don't even have tea in them. The "bubble" part refers to the spaces in the wide straw between the soft balls of tapioca that one slurps up in the process of drinking. The tapioca is referred to by the Asian name "Sago" and are chewy, golden-brown balls made from the starch of sweet potatoes. They also look like bubbles, which is an alternate explanation for the drink's name. For people who dislike the texture, the drinks can be made without sago but it's worth trying - the sago is essentially flavourless and a lot of fun to chew! The drinks themselves have a syrup or fresh fruit base, mixed with milk, juice, or tea. They are 32 ounces and shaken in a plastic cup, over which a colourful thin plastic cover is attached. When the drink is ready, the customer stabs the very wide straw through the cover, and enjoys pure taste pleasure. Syrup-based drinks are very sweet and available in a variety of fruit flavours. There are also coffee varieties, from plain coffee to mocha, to coffee with almond. By far the most popular drinks are the ones with fresh fruit. Mixed with ice, fruit, syrup, and the milk, juice, or tea base, the creation is essentially a smoothie with a sweet kick. Some of the varieties include strawberry, cantaloupe, and avocado. Yes, avocado is a fruit, and it makes a very tasty smoothie - a nutty flavour with just a hint of sweetness. Since bubble tea originated in Taiwan, there are also a lot of uniquely Asian flavours to try, such as the gritty and vanilla-like taro root and lychee. You can find all of this and more at the Tea Cottage, as well as a variety of hot coffee and tea drinks. So get adventurous, and you might just find yourself going back for more.

BEST BUBBLE TEA EVER! I come up from New York once a year to visit family and we make as many trips…read morehere as possible. I LOVE the avocado bubble tea. They moved to a new location over the summer - 101 ST. AND 109 A AVE. Also they make their teas with REAL fruit unlike the places in New York which makes them with powder. Extra delicious!
