But recent visit was much more positive. I managed to crack a lower first molar that already had a crown on it. The tooth was not salvageable, so my dentist pulled it and when it healed I was referred to Dr. Van Heukelom for an implant. The process itself was fine, as long as you're not squeamish. However, I've got a funky immune system and developed what I was sure was an infection but as I don't typically register a fever or other common signs of infection and pain meds weren't helping, I was told it was nerve endings regenerating. Nope, face finally ballooned out and required lots of antibiotics to resolve. Concern was possible damage to the bone and loss of the implant. Turns out the upside to my heavy duty clenching are really strong jaw muscles which gives my mandible excellent bone density. Had to return recently after being at my dentist for a cleaning. He noticed some possible bone loss around the implant on X-ray. Went back to Dr. Van Heukelom for a look see. Turns out I was doing more clenching than usual and stressing the bone. She felt it wasn't a critical problem with a bite adjustment to ease the impact. Six months later, all was good. Nice that this was all follow up to the initial treatment and no charge. There are two locations for this practice, in Salem, NH and the other in Londonderry, NH. I have been to both. The Salem office is in an older building, circa 1970s, dark space, narrow corridors, though the exam rooms are double the size of most dentist cubicles. Doesn't strike you as high tech, but they've got the gear to do the work, including panorama X-rays.

Dr. Alexander and the team at Londonderry Oral Surgery both in Salem and Londonderry were amazing. They were reassuring, very helpful answering questions, showed patient kindness. I witnessed one staff member physically escorting a post-op elderly patient to their car, just to be sure he got to the passenger seat ok. The day of my son's surgery he helped my son to the car as well. Also, Dr. Alexander worked him in quickly before he left for college and allowed a couple extra weeks of healing in between just to be sure he would be available to my son if needed. This is the only oral surgeon office my family will use.

I scheduled my sons appointment a month in advance and they called me the day before the appointment to tell me that I needed to come in the morning at 11 am instead of the afternoon at 2 pm. So I called the Methuen oral surgeon they was very nice on the phone. So I made a appointment for next day. Great so excited they can see me so fast. Well the old saying goes if it seems to good to be true then it probably is. The staff was ok and decently friendly. Unfortunately the Doctor on the other hand was a little overbearing. He came on a little strong and I heard 3 times about this stupid $50 fee.. lol but I needed my teeth out and i really couldn't wait. So I went ahead and booked the surgery to take out my teeth. I felt it went ok. Come to find out he had to work for his money and I guess this aggravated him. He upset that he had to give me more medication than the average person. ( I guess I was costing him some profit ). So besides the fact that 2 separate places in my jaw was broken which I can happen. But he didnt tell me. When I went back for check up. He was extremely rude and mentioned that had he know I was from a different city he would of never took me in the first place. I feel this was very unprofessional of him to say a comment like that. Doctor seemed very annoyed because he needed to come help me on a Saturday for all but 10 minutes. Was in excruciating pain due to the dry socket. Then i was getting sent bills stating i owed $0.00...ignored it then i get a call and letter from a collection agency one that will hurt your credit apparently i owed $50.... paid that off, and never want to come here again. Staff is not friendly at all. Office is old and antiquated and the vents are covered in dirt. It sickens me when health providers harass patients over $50 and less and threaten to hurt their credit. I will be spreading the word about this one as well. This is one place you need to watch out for or keep on top of with payments because their communication skills are non-existent.

After I hit age 40, I knew it was now or never! After receiving a referral to Dr. Berty from the Andover Moms Facebook group, I scheduled my appointment. Upon meeting Dr. Berty, I could tell that he was a very empathetic and understanding doctor that focuses on his patients. He took his time to have a conversation with me to ease my fears about extractions. Two weeks later, I went in for surgery. Don't get me wrong, it was a painful procedure, but it couldn't have gone any better. He and his staff were professional, thorough, and kind from start to finish. More money than average, but latest equipment. They are pretty pushy when it comes to looking for money. I actually had to hold back laughing at this particular dentist (gold miner), it was so obvious. Pros: Office is very clean. Staff is very friendly & helpful, hygienists are very good, but the Dentists... VERY pushy. If you bear that in mind (and don't take their pushy methods too seriously), they're okay. I don't even know where to begin, but let me tell you--I hadn't pursued dental care since my late teens (I'm now in my mid-50s) due to a crippling dental fear that made me endure pain rather than visit a provider. At my wit's end, I searched for a dental office that could accommodate my phobia. I happened upon Artisan Dentistry and booked my consultation. I was visibly shaking and dizzy (literally!) with fear as I made my way to his practice and chair. (The office is beautifully and calmly decorated, and his staff is wonderfully trained to deal with us "chickens.") Dr. Mathew immediately greeted me warmly and asked me to talk about myself and my history. He has wonderful bedside manner and is quite gregarious--he genuinely enjoys a good chat. We just talked for about half an hour to an hour, and together we decided to take some careful steps forward. I asked about full sedation, and he was completely open to it and any options I wanted to pursue. I could call the shots at any time and switch sedation plans. He gently suggested that I start with a few teeth cleaning sessions using topical anesthetics and Novocain as needed, guaranteeing that I wouldn't feel anything. I went in for my cleanings, and it was exactly as he described--I didn't feel a thing! Here was the turning point: I asked him point-blank, "So I had some Novocain during my cleanings--is that what you would use if we didn't do sedation dentistry?" "Yes," he said, "the same type of pain management for each part of your mouth that I work on." I said, "You know what? Let's try it." That decision changed everything! For all the massive work that was done, I wasn't sedated in any way! Let me tell you, I've had major work done, and his priority was always pain management. Dr. Mathew literally changed my life by showing me "here is what a medical professional can be." Since being under his care, I no longer fear having minor medical procedures done in other doctors' offices. It turns out my epic teeth issues were only symptoms of the real problem: my fear of dentists (and medical professionals), the perceived loss of control, and procedures that were unknown to me. Yes, Dr. Mathew is at the top of his technical dental game--this is obvious (he loves to talk about the many seminars and practicals he still attends and the new things he's learned)--but for me? His ability to help people like me overcome life-long fear-based obstacles. He removed (extracted, lol?) my fundamental fear. I can't say it any clearer than that. He has done nothing short of changing my life. Oh, and as for my new dental work? The best compliment I get is how nice my teeth look and that I must be hawkish about brushing.
