My dog seeing dolphins for the first time
    Anjanette S.

I really wanted to go whale watching but needed something dog friendly and this place popped up. Even though we didn't see any whales, this activity was super fun! I really appreciated that my dog could come along on a boat and the fact that the staff was super welcoming and accommodating to my dog. They provided us our own area to sit, a dog bed, a water bowl, and lots of love and cuddles. My dog also got to experience seeing dolphins and sea lions for the first time. I am definitely coming back because since we didn't get to see whales, they invite you to come back for free to hopefully see some the next time. Thank you so much again for this wonderful experience!

Enjoyed the trip, saw dolphins , pelicans , and seals . Did not see any whales, but they have whale guarantee, and they offer a free trip, with no expiration date. We also got to see the San Salvador ship sailing. There is plenty of free parking . You can bring your own snacks or lunch . They do offer soda, water, chips and granola bars, which was nice . Look forward to going again.

Had an amazing day with Next Level Sailing! It was a little cool and chilly out, but the crew is awesome and was nothing but five star hospitality. Captain found a mega pod of Pacific Porpoise that we sailed with for a while and then 2 humpback whales that we followed for a little bit as well. Far exceeded our expectations and would rebook for a second trip anytime we are in San Diego!

I have conflicted feelings. I have been whale watching before and had a very different experience my first time. Pros: We saw 2 humpback whales, a huge pod of dolphins, and lots of seals. The views were unmatched. They also had free soda, water, and snacks were passed around twice. Cons: It's a long trip with very uncomfortable seats. Since it is a sailboat, passengers sit on benches for about 3 hours. The water is also very choppy. About half of the boat was experiencing sea sickness. The ride out to where the whales live is very long. Bring things for you kids to do! Once we finally got to the whales, we saw them come up for air twice and then had to quickly leave to return. Ultimately, I saw sea life, but it was just a very long day!

Wonderful, but don't get left behind! What better thing to do with my visiting Kansas born-and-bred sister than take her out on the ocean to look for whales? We had a great time, and she said one of the best experiences of her life was when a rarely-sighted blue whale blew and then glided alongside us no more than 30 feet away. A fin whale also made an appearance, as did two different species of dolphin (including a pod with babies). The Navy base was pretty cool, especially the Los Angeles class attack submarine in drydock and the drone ship Sea Hunter. I think we'd have been happy just to go sailing. Being on the America was an order of magnitude better than being on the big double-decker diesel ships the other cruises offer. You're down near the water, and it's pretty thrilling just riding the waves and feeling the movement. The crack of the sails is a nice accompaniment. I'd advise making your way as far forward on the America as allowed, and getting a seat on one of the flat benches (I assume they store life jackets) along the side. The seating along the middle is at a slight incline, and in addition to being more comfortable the benches give you the better view to the side and forward anyway. Be sure to bring your own cushions! Otherwise you'll be sitting on bare wood or plastic. When signing in an hour early, look for the gazebo with a blue Whale Watching vertical banner. We checked in and then stood by the water looking at the ships, and somehow missed the announcement that it was time to cross the street and head out. We turned around just in time and caught up to our group before the locking door at the marina closed. Pay attention! Extra credit goes to the crew member with Kai the corgi dog who loves gazing at the ocean almost as much as we did; who doesn't love a happy corgi? Extra-extra credit for her (the owner) knowing which aircraft carrier it was we were watching coming into port and flying her air group off. Another rare treat. I've been on other whale watching cruises, but this is the only one I'd consider in the future. Great crew, great vessel, whales, and free Doritos. What's not to love?

We thoroughly enjoyed our whale watching experience. This wasn't your ordinary touristy tour, it was a super cool sailing experience, with knowledgeable guides. And while we didn't see any whales on our particular tour, we did get to sail along a pod of dolphins. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have had in my life. And they have a guarantee if you don't see a whale, you come back again at no cost. Highly recommend this tour.

This was our first time going whale watching and I can say, this was an amazing experience for my family. We were just excited to get out to the water but, 20 mins in we spot a dolphin. It didn't take long after that for us to, not only find a mega and super pod of dolphin, but to see multiple humpback whales breach. It was just awesome. The crew was amazing as well. They were very helpful and made sure we felt welcome. I will definitely be doing this again with Next Level Sailing

What a gift to be on this special boat! I loved seeing the sail boat in action, the owner of the boat was so patient with all of us. It is generous to let people bring their dogs- knowing they might get sick . The trip was awesome, wind was strong and waves were large! The whales were magical, sea lions hunting were adorable and dolphins playful. Great day on the ocean!! Thank you so much for sharing your personal boat with us

We are so happy that we booked the Next Level Sailing as our whale watching tour, not only because we have the chance to explore the 141-feet historical sailing yacht, but also because this is the ONLY dog-friendly whale watching tour in San Diego!!! We booked the weekday 1:15pm tour, $85 per adult and dog is free! We checked in 30 mins before the start time and our guide with her lovely crew dog Marie is already there waiting! The full 4 hours experience is lots of fun! They give a very knowledgable background stories of the off-shore ships and sightseeing along the way, and on our way back the crew are sharing the fun facts of different whale species as well! Very interesting! Also all the crew members are really nice to the dogs as well! They offered free ice cold bottle water and soda during the tour and also free blankets rental and free sea-sick pills if anyone feel cold or not well, very considerate and sweet! The most important thing is, we get to see whale breaching 7 times in a row that day! Very very fortunate, at the end of the trip the crew is even walking around Airdrop the great videos they took during the tour so everyone can go home with the fantastic experience in their cellphone as well! This is the best experience I had so far this year, thank you all for all the crew members from Next Level Sailing! Hope to see you guys again when Blue Whale season starts!!!

Like all the other reviews mention this is a great experience. From check in all the way through to making back ashore at the end of your trip. We had a great time, saw two or three small pods of grey whales, lots of dolphins and learned quite a lot about them, the San Diego harbor area and the yacht America - both the original and this replica.

I never know that my boy can be this handsome!

A lot of people can be fit on their boat (if you get the group one) and the line can get pretty large and it's first come first sit. For 10 bucks a pop you can go on early. For 200 dollars you get the exclusive front top deck. I recommend sitting at the top. Please note that means sometimes no shade so bring a hat. You can sit on the first level or inside in the shade. The boat has a bathroom and after 3 miles you can get drinks! If you park in the lot attached to their location it's 10 dollars. Or you can street park on Quivera road which I recommend as it was super easy and not a walk at all. Would highly recommend regardless of if you see any whales just for the joy of being out on the water.

I arrived at 7pm for a 9pm departure. I was greeted by the crew and captain. There were only 14 of us slated to go on the 1.5 trip after the big bluefin at the outer banks. After boarding the vessel, the crew helped stow gear, informed everyone to sign the manifest, choose a bunk, and then get the tackle ready for the next day's adventure. The brief seminar concluded and everyone proceeded to articulate his own tackle according to the crew's recommendations. The line and hook sizes were determined with the actual bait in mind. Fish the bait size, not the hook size seemed to be an echoing theme throughout the trip. A good night's sleep was had by all as we arrived at the Cortez boat in flat calm and even greasy seas. Even though we were one of the last boats to arrive at the grounds, the captain quickly put us on jumping and active 20-80lb bluefin tuna. The crew chummed the area and soon the first angler yelled, "Fresh one," as the glint off of his gold Trinidad began to sing the song that all fishermen love to hear. A steady pick started to happen after the first fish was hooked. Most anglers were getting bit on the heavier line, but the fish seemed to be eerily shy of my 40 pound test line. Nary a bite happened that first drift. Bluefin are usually pickier than a 5 year old around broccoli. This day was no exception. I asked the crew for a bit of advice and they said to keep working and plugging away. Frustration started to set in as rent rod gear fishermen were being pushed to their limits as I continued to do the tuna shuffle around the boat without much luck. Then I decided to do take a chance. I dropped my line size from 40lb to 25lb test and the results were immediate. I hooked up my first fish after a 10 minute soak of a sardine, but after 15 minutes of battle, I pulled the hook and Charlie the Tuna swam back to the depths. The crew encouraged me to keep fishing. I asked a fellow passenger what time it was and he said that it was only 8:45 in the morning and we had all day to fish. By the time I pulled the hook on my second hook up, 25 fish had been landed with most being in the 60-75 pound range. I knew my time would come if I just kept working and stayed positive. My Torium 16 would soon find out if it was up to the challenge. Line started to pick up speed coming off the reel as I took a legitimate swing at a big bluefin. The hook held and the battle began. For the next hour, a crew member stayed pretty close to me as I gingerly worked the tug of war game with the big fish. The crew member continued to give little pieces of warranted advice on how to land the beast. After an hour into the fight, I started to get a bit tired. The crew member said that the battle was coming to its conclusion but more fish are lost at the rail than at any other time because fishermen get excited when they see the prize near the surface and start to get a little "horsey" with their movements. Slow and steady worked during majority of the battle, so I continued the same steady movements as the fish began to rise. The beautiful colors of the bluefin shone brightly in the mid-morning sun as the fish laid on its side and was appropriately double gaffed by two the crew members. The encouragement during the battle didn't go unappreciated. The rest of the day went pretty much the same with some personal bests and some heartbreak at the rail. Everyone eventually landed at least one fish as the entire boat went home with limits as well as a memories that will get us all through another week of work. On another note, the toughness award goes out to the captain of the Diawa as he toughed out a rough incident with the bait tank chair. After a quick visit to the galley for medicine and a bandage, he was back on deck with his crew. It was a stellar day which was only made better by the excellent service of the members of the Diawa Pacific.

Since I booked the nighttime dinner cruise, I only paid around $5 for parking, which was super reasonable. Getting into City Cruises San Diego was really easy the check-in process was smooth, they just took our names, and we were good to go. My boyfriend and I went on the two-hour dinner cruise, and it was such a fun experience. The ticket is around $150, but honestly, it felt worth it. Just being out on the water at night made it special. The service was great, and the staff was super friendly the entire time. The food was actually surprisingly good. They had a wide variety of options--from salads to entrées and appetizers and everything was well done. Plus, there were unlimited desserts, including fruits, cakes, and more. They even greeted us with champagne, which was a nice touch. There was also a DJ onboard, which made the vibe even more fun. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this as an activity if you're in San Diego. It's easy, fun, and something a little different. Also, they often have discounts online, so you can probably get a better deal. Overall, such a great experience, we had an amazing time.
