When my girlfriend Christen and I decided that we were fully on board with having a home birth, we had lined up 3 interviews with midwives in the Sacramento area; Ariana was the first. We sat with her and her student-midwife, Kari, and Ariana went through her (very) extensive background in delivering babies. We were pleased to have learned that she was well-over 400 successful deliveries at that time, and received her education with some of the best institutes, with the best midwifes, in the some of the most complicated birthing situations. I don't even know where to begin as I can't say enough good things about my experience with Next Gen Midwifery! This was my second pregnancy (8 years later) and unfortunately I was dealing with some medical issues due to thyroid disease so I felt like I was destined to have a hospital birth. I am not someone that usually leaves reviews, but I have to leave one for Ariana and Kari as they are the best!!! We used them for the birth of our 4th baby. It was my first home birth and Ariana made me feel comfortable and confident with her knowledge throughout the pregnancy. When it came time for labor and delivery, my baby didn't want to come out and I ended up delivering a few days shy of 42 weeks. Ariana made me feel confident that we were going to get him to come before 42 weeks and we did it! My water broke when we were on the phone talking and she said that was the first time that ever happened to her. Yay! I also never had my water break before in any of my other labors, so as excited as I was, she reminded me that labor and contractions would start soon after and that I needed to prepare and my son was born 4 hours later! Ariana kept in touch often and when she realized my contractions started very intense, she and Kari came over right away. I was having contractions lasting a minute to a minute and a half and only getting 30 seconds break between them. And when I said something didn't feel good, she stopped right away and tried something else. Ariana helped with breathing and when she saw I was losing it, she gave me pointers that were really helpful. We are so thankful to have found Ariana for our home birth. Having a home birth was not something I necessarily wanted initially, but the logistics of what to do with our two older children when I went into labor, led us to consider the option. I had unmedicated labors with my previous children, so the biggest difference I thought would just be location. I'm so thankful we chose Ariana and a home birth. It was so lovely to be able to freely walk around the house, not be tethered to medical equipment, and after the birth rest comfortably in our own home. Having a home birth with Ariana was so much more than just location. I felt guided through my labor, rather than in the hospital where I felt directed as to what to do. She would give me options throughout my labor, to include 'do nothing.' I just felt so at ease with everything and not confined to a cold hospital bed and room. As for prenatal and postnatal care Ariana immediately made me feel confident in her experience and knowledge. I had a minor complication that she made me feel at ease about how she would manage it should any problems arise. Appointments were far longer than any OB appointment I'd ever had and offered the opportunity to really discuss any concerns. Postpartum care for myself and baby was wonderful and I felt at ease to ask questions as they arose through the days and weeks after baby arrived. I cannot recommend Ariana enough. I welcomed my first baby into the world back in June and I was able to say that through my whole pregnancy I was receiving the best prenatal care. My experience with Ariana was great. From the very beginning of my time working with Ariana I was able to comfortably communicate with her and feel confident in any decision I was making for my baby after talking it through with her. I did work with Kaiser to do my blood work and ultrasounds and I'll tell you the difference in care you receive for your prenatal appointments are night and day. With Ariana, you get a full hour every appointment and that goes a long way. She really takes the time to get to know you, your concerns, and give you in-depth advice and care plans. My labor ultimately ended in c-section at 41 & 1/2 weeks. I am very grateful to Ariana for monitoring our progress during my time at home and also making the right decision to keep my baby and I safe by transferring us to a hospital (she stayed with my at my house all night checking my baby and I to make sure we were ok). She stayed with me at the hospital to make sure that the hospital teams were aware of my situation, my birth plans, and wishes for my baby after his birth. Just got dropped by Ariana Cohen nine weeks away from our due date because we're going through a temporary financial hardship during a pandemic and the money is more important to her than making sure our baby arrives safely. I understand she is a professional and needs to get paid, but we would have paid her once we had the money, and I think she knew that. This is devastating to our family and sense of security and well-being, and we're now in a situation twice as precarious as before because she blindsided us with this. We've been counting on having a home birth this whole time and Ariana knew our finances were shaky from day one. We thought she genuinely wanted to help deliver our baby, and help us. And we were wrong. We were hoodwinked by an overprivileged, sheltered person who has never dealt with financial hardship or marginalized people. Not having money on the spot shouldn't preclude anyone from receiving quality care in this country! This is exactly why people seek help outside the established medical system, and go to midwives and doulas! No discussion of a payment plan or anything either, just some half-assed resources pointing us to the local Sutter birth center. So deeply disappointed in Ariana and anyone who treats poor people like they don't deserve good treatment or good things simply because of a temporary lack of money to their name. The care we received up until being dumped was stellar, but if you're struggling with money at all, or are any type of marginalized person, this is not a safe person to go to for care. The minute she realizes she's not getting paid on the dot she will kick you out of the car. After putting on this air of being progressive and enlightened and culturally sensitive the entire time she deals with you. It's all a show if you don't have the money upfront. Watch out for these fake progressives who act like God's gift to people of color and the less fortunate, but then leave you in the dust the minute your otherness makes you even slightly inconvenient to their bank account. I would write more, but I now have to figure out how my baby is going to arrive on this earth safely without this woman's help. Such a deeply disappointing experience. I pray for my partner and baby's safety, and I ask that you do too. Because we're now at the mercy of a medical system that treats my Black partner like an animal, where mortality rates for Black mothers and infants are astronomical compared to other races, because Ariana Cohen needed her money when she needed it and decided that was more important than my baby's safety. A Dad's perspective on homebirth-When I first heard about the idea of not being at a hospital for my wife's first childbirth, it shook me to my core. I had never heard of anyone in my side of the family that did this. thankfully, my sister-in-law was the first person who I knew that went through this process. After my sister-in-law told us how patient and knowledgeable Ariana was, it lowered the barrier of uncertainty for me. When my wife got pregnant, we both were very excited and at the same time nervous to have this done at home; for the most part, I was very anxious about the things. I did not know and understand. I was very hesitant to let my guard down as I had fear that I wouldn't be able to help or help wouldn't be nearby if something was to happen. Thankfully, throughout the months that we went to visit Ariana she showed us her vast amount of knowledge in the field and her passion through this. I slowly was comforted that no matter what happened. Ariana was going to take care of my wife. This meant the world to me. During the second trimester, we were given some advice from our primary care doctor in regards to medication to take we both were completely uncertain whether we should take this and as a precautionary measure, we contacted Ariana to let her know if this was OK. Ariana gave us advice as why we shouldn't take these specific medication's during pregnancy and this also was very important to me. It completely eased my mind as I had no idea the interactions and various medication's would have. One of the biggest things I appreciated was that she was call away throughout the pregnancy. If anything was to happen this was worth its weight and gold. I think often people are hung up on the delivery aspect of the pregnancy but this pregnancy is nine months long and having Ariana there for those nine months and then many weeks after the fact to make sure that everything was good. In fact she never made me feel silly for all my random questions, and I had plenty of questions as a first time parent. We highly recommend anyone who is on the fence about welcoming Ariana into their life to do it and more importantly to do it as early in the journey as possible. I can't say enough about how wonderful Ariana was for my first birth with my daughter in 2017. I visited with a lot of midwives in our area at the time and after all of that, I felt like Ariana was the only option! I loved her relaxed and calm presence at all our meetings, I loved how she calmed my fears and anxieties and normalized all the changes involved during pregnancy, and I felt really supported by her highly intelligent and research-based approach to pregnancy and childbirth. At the time she had less birth experience then she has now (although it was still a lot!) and so I was happy she was partnered with a practitioner with decades of experience - but in the end I could have happily just had her, because during the epic few days that was my labor, and an eventual transfer to the hospital, it was Ariana who I realized I trusted the most. Even if I were to give birth at a hospital the second time around, I wouldn't hesitate to have Ariana be my midwife if only for the months of care I was able to receive without once having to step into a hospital, meet with a different OBGYN each time, or have to fend off the conventional messages that are sometimes pushed on you in hospital settings. I felt that my pregnancy care was so birth-positive, so mama-centric, and so supportive in every way. She and her partner at the time really had my back, and I feel lucky for the support before, during, and after my labor. She helped to flip my breach baby, she came with me to the hospital, and she was available post partum in a way I never could have dreamed of - coming to our home multiple times when I had issues with bleeding and coming for all the check ups so that we never had to leave our home nest. I am so grateful she was part of my birth team, and I'm so pleased to know she will be continuing to support all the new mamas in our community! read more
