I have nothing but wonderful things to say about The Root! I moved back to Sacramento after living in the Bay Area for 10 years and was looking for an in-person prenatal yoga studio for my second pregnancy like I did with my first pregnancy. After calling many studios in the Sacramento area and finding nothing to support pregnant people, a great friend of mine recommended The Root. I truly enjoyed all the prenatal yoga clases during my pregnancy. When I first arrived, I was immediately welcomed. I felt safe and I felt like I fit in! I enjoyed how the instructors (I attended Gloria's and Kelly's class) always had modifications depending on how far along we were in our pregnancy to make it more comfortable, help us open up more, and prepare for birth. I loved Kelly's head massages and aroma therapy during savasana. After the birth of my child I started attending the pelvic floor class and baby and me yoga classes. This was something I had never done before. But after I found out I had a prolapsed and my physical therapist wasn't available until 4 months from my diagnosis, I decided it was important to go. I've been going to the clases for 3 month now and I truly feel like I have less leaking, more control, and knowledge on my pelvic floor. I love going to the baby and me yoga classes to connect with other moms and to bond with my child all while doing yoga to help me build my strength. I started coming here when I was around 10 weeks pregnant and continued classes throughout my entire pregnancy (my water broke a few hours after my last prenatal yoga class!). It was an absolute dream to have this studio so close to my house. The atmosphere is so welcoming and tranquil. The yoga classes are very relaxed but the strength training classes definitely had me sweating...which was a nice balance. Going to The Root and stop buying sour gummy bears were my two best decisions during this pregnancy. I'm attending once or twice a week the prenatal yoga class. I only regret that I've waited for month 5 to start. My body was so stiff and overall feeling crappy. After my very first session, I was a little emotional (hehe) in my car because it was the first time in months since I felt like I was in some control over my body and mind. It's such a great place to feel good. I don't know how to say it I'm another way. I'm also meeting with amazing other moms to be. I also tried the restorative yoga class with Michelle. I will go back a little closer to my due date. It's about focusing on your breathing and relaxation. I started at The Root doing the prenatal yoga class and it was a great class for some exercise and relaxation. I met so many amazng women in that class who have become my Mama/ baby community. I can't believe how scarce prenatal yoga classes are in the greater Sacramento area!! Where's a prego to go for yoga and body prep for that intense experience we know as labor?? Thank goodness I found Julie on Yelp- several girlfriends highly praised her and had nothing but fantastic things to say about her and the classes offered. Once I hit 20 weeks I couldn't wait to check out the studio and get back to yoga as I was having severe withdrawals from my practice. I am forever grateful for Julie and her prenatal yoga for an outstanding labor prep and body conditioning. The breathing techniques worked wonders, and the extra flexibility from yoga absolutely helped, especially when they had my knees practically at my ears while pushing. I didn't make it to Post Partum Sculpt nor the 7:30pm class, as mine and baby's schedules wouldn't work, but I also have heard nothing but greatness about them and the huge benefits. She also has hospital grade Medela Symphony breast pumps for rent, and omg did it make a huge difference for me in my milk output, very important when you're an exclusive pumper. I've used it for a month now, and my milk doubled in quantity. I wish I had talked to her sooner or made an appointment as each lactation consultant I've spoken with had good take away info used in conjunction with the others'. Treat yourselves, mommies! I attended prenatal yoga classes and loved The Root and Kellie so much that I am still going to postpartum classes now! The space is great and everyone is so welcoming. The classes are a great opportunity to meet other moms and ask questions and share stories (the good and the bad). The yoga really helped at a time when I was so uncomfortable being pregnant. And post baby, it was so great to be able to bring baby with me for a light workout without worrying if she got fussy or loud during the class. My only complaint is wishing they offered more postpartum classes for working moms! read more

Previously, I was trying to make a regular yoga class work for my pregnant body and it just.... wasn't. So I decided that it was time to get into a real prenatal-type class, and I'm really glad I did. I would classify myself as a beginning to intermediate level yogi who has taken yoga classes fairly regularly for about 3 years, but only a few times since I've been pregnant (for the reasons previously stated). I found the class to be just right, not too wussy and just rigorous enough to challenge you, with a focus on breathing and poses that prepare the body for childbirth (such as squatting and lunges). The Monday/Wednesday night classes starts at 6pm and last about an hour. Class starts with everyone introducing themselves and their due date, baby gender, and the hospital where they will be giving birth. Bring a mat and water; props are provided. Drop in classes at $15 each and you can get an 8-class or 12-class pass for a discounted rate. The instructor Julie and other ladies are really friendly, plus they offer great classes for after baby comes, like postnatal sculpting (where babies are welcome to come too!), daddy and baby class, labor preparation, lactation consultations, and baby signs. read more

I enjoyed the pregnancy yoga. When I first started it was pretty easy for me but at the end of the pregnancy it got more difficult. It was nice just to be around other mommas and get moving. Been taking prenatal yoga with Julie for a couple months now and it's definitely the best thing I have done for myself during my first pregnancy! I love the class and Julie is a great instructor, very calming and positive and I feel learning the breathing techniques and keeping limber will help me with labor. Plus it feels really good to be in a room full of women going through the same stage of life as me. And it's got great air conditioning ~ essential for the Sacramento summer. Extremely frustrating to have to leave work to go due to the retail hours and to have done so for nothing. The store came highly recommended, but that level of inconvenience means I won't be back. I took the Big Sibling To Be course with my 3 (almost 4) year old daughter. Unfortunately, it was pretty disappointing. The coolest part was practicing diapering, feeding, and holding baby dolls. Unfortunately, this section lasted for less than 5 minutes. I would have enjoyed taking more time to talk with my daughter about these things and showing her in more depth how she can safely help. We also watched a silly video with some good info. The actual learning portion of the class was less than 45 minutes. We were done about 40 mins earlier than the scheduled time. Not worth the price paid. Lil was nice and the space was nice. I haven't used any of their other services so this review is solely based on the Big Sibling class. read more

I cannot praise The Root enough. Kellie was our childbirth and postpartum educator and I'm forever grateful for her knowledge and support. Not only does The Root offer amazing, practical, and much needed classes and support for parents, it is also a very special community. I've made incredible new friends by attending classes here and my toddler daughter has blossomed in her Kindermusik class at The Root. We moved out to Carmichael and I still very happily make the drive to The Root for all the wonderful offerings, support, and friendship. I have been taking prenatal yoga with Julie since about 8 weeks into my pregnancy. She has a wonderful sense of humor and personality that I have found entertaining and endearing the last 30+ weeks. As I am nearing the end of my pregnancy, I took her Labor Tools and Newborn classes as well with my husband. We found both informative and extremely helpful in preparing us for parenthood. The Labor class included information on what to expect in early labor, several positions to try during active labor, and breathing techniques to use throughout labor. She also included ways to avoid having a c section, if that was your goal. The Newborn class also contained a lot of great information, but was not a tactile class meaning if you are looking for someone to teach you to diaper, swaddle, or hold your baby, this isn't the class for you. Julie goes over the various stages your baby will go through, ways to hold your baby, things to expect when breastfeeding, and additional resources for help. I would recommend these classes and yoga to any mom and have several friends who also attend her classes. It's been great to have additional classes to take that aren't through the hospital. As a first time mom, I was anxious about breastfeeding, finding other moms with similar aged children to connect with, and feeling like myself again. Herself moms came to the rescue! Breastfeeding- Several times I've showed up at Herself Moms asking Julie "I'm due next week and know I need breastfeeding tops/bras..help?!" "I want to pump...help?!? " "I need an underwire bra and have no idea what size I am!" Each time Julie patiently answered my questions and suggested products. I have been really happy with everything I bought at Herself Moms. Connecting- By taking the post-partum sculpt classes and the sweat pea yoga series, I was able to meet like-minded moms with children all within a few weeks of my daughter. It has been a great support group! Yoga & Sculpt- It is tough to find many workout opportunities that are accepting of having your infant there. Herself Moms is more than just accepting...the classes are set up with tons of entertainment for you baby and everyone understands if you need to stop and feed or change a diaper or just rock your little one. Julie makes it feel like an extension of home. This place is a gem and I'm so glad I found it. read more

***This review is solely based on my experience with the class for Newborn Tips and Techniques. Have heard great things about yoga. I had high hopes for this class. The description seemed right. I was looking for a good intro class for my husband. He had never held a baby, never diapered or swaddled and needed and general, This-is-how-to-keep-your-child-alive-and-happy-basics. Unfortunately, none of these things were covered at all. Some info was helpful- like the info on sleep cycles (which was a video), and warning to stay away from bumpo's with medical evidence backing it up. I like anevidence-based approach and really felt as though I was listening to *some* information with a lot of opinion and judgement mixed in. Although I understand this business is also does lactation consulting, some of the claims made about formula and bottle feeding were speculative, not based in fact, and kind of offensive to parents with no other options. The teacher also made a comment about the local baby wearing community that I had just found being like a cult, which I found very offensive, as the groups have been nothing but wonderful communities of mothers that just want to keep their children close. I think the class could have been a lot better with some tweaking. But my husbands words as we left the class was, "Well, that was a waste of 40 bucks." read more

My husband and I took the Must Have Tools for Labor class and it was great! Julie is very informative and I really enjoyed her attitude. The class gives you plenty of information on what to expect before and during labor. Julie also teaches breathing techniques as well as different laboring positions and massage techniques for your partner to use to help you get through contractions. This is my first pregnancy and the class Julie taught made me feel way more confident about labor and birthing. read more

The Root is such a special place and I'm so grateful a space like this exists. My husband and I first came to The Root on a recommendation from our doula for the "Must Have Tools for Labor" class. The owner Kellie taught the class and it was a great overview to help prep us for labor. After I had my son I've attended the postpartum sculpt, baby and me yoga, and mama PE classes. Not only is it great to take fitness classes tailored specifically to new moms who are still recovering physically from childbirth, but it's also so nice to have a friendly environment where I can bring my baby, meet other new moms, and feel comfortable nursing or tending to my fussy babe in the middle of class. I love how they have a variety of swings and bouncers for my baby to hang out in while I exercise! I discovered this place when I was looking for a location to do prenatal exercise halfway through my pregnancy. In short, every class I have taken here has exceeded my expectations! The prenatal yoga was something I looked forward to each week. Following the birth of my son I attended a number of classes (both instructional and exercise) such as the sweet pea series (yoga while holding your sweet babe!), post partum sculpt (getting back in to baby shape), infant massage (a must for every new mom) and much more. My husband and I live in Alaska so when we were searching for birthing classes there were not many options. We had about a week long window where we would be in California so we decided to try out the Must have tools for labor class. We booked a last minute private class to accommodate our schedule and we don't regret it! The class was fun and informative! She even when above and beyond and spent extra time teaching us certain concepts like breathing techniques that I was having trouble with. She was patient and got to know my husband and I in order to give us the best knowledge for our specific situation. She knows how the hospitals work in the area and she spends time to make sure you know what questions to ask doctors to make sure that you are fully informed of how everything works up to the day of delivery because sometimes us first time parents just don't know what we don't know!
