I'm not normally much of a pie eater, but I was told that I simply had to taste a pie from Janet's Pies in Newtown; a local tradition, delicacy and treat. The exterior of the shop is characteristically colourful for Newtown, and inside there were an impressive number of pie munchers. The atmosphere is very relaxed: sofas, low coffee tables, bar stools and plenty of newspapers. Of course, there were an enormous variety of pies to choose from - Janet definitely has something for everyone. I was impressed/intrigued to see a vegan menu too (what on earth would a vegan pie consist of?!) The answer is Thai brocolli and potato pie, a Middle Eastern roll or a Vegetable Curry pie, all of which can be washed down with a soy milk latte. Every month there's a new special pie flavour, which, if it proves very popular, can become a permanent fixture on the pie menu. Choose from fillings that range from the traditional beef or lamb to the more adventurous pasta bolognaise or beef, bacon and cheese. The pies are warm, filling and very delicious. However, it's not just the delicious pies and casual atmosphere that have made Janet's Pies the popular restaurant it is. It's Janet herself, and the rest of her staff who make this a must-visit place. Incredibly friendly and jolly - they are the icing on the cake - or the crust on the pie.

Mince beef pie with peas & mash in gravy

Delicious! A basic beef mince is only $4.70, with most others in the $5-6 range. If you're feeling splurgy, $9.95 gets you a side and drink, with a choice of chips, salad or peas & mash with gravy. I opted for the peas & mash, with tasty results.

Oh, Janet. Magic must flow freely from your fingertips. Despite my general distaste for pies, I think yours are the only one's I'd ever eat. You've perfected the flakey crust/steamy filling ratio in a way that other pie makers wish they could. Janet's is a really small pie shop in Newtown that is renown for, obviously, it pies. The façade of the shop is covered in bright purple colors, embellished with purple hearts. The couches inside are even purple! As the 'made for Newtown' sign suggests, you can only get Janet's pies here on King Street, though you are able to get pies frozen, allowing you to take these home these parcels of heaven. All the pies I've had here have been great. The thing that makes Janet's stand out is that none of the pies are overly salty, as they have been at many other stores.

I actually got to meet Janet, from Janet's Pies. What a dynamic young entrepreneur as well I must say. She was this totally groovy chick and now I can understand how an idea as simple as a pie shop could be so effective. The shop has a stand out purple sign with a cool bright purple couch that you can sit on to enjoy a pie on your way past. The pies have been created for even vegans and vegetarians to enjoy with flavours such as Thai brocoli and potatoe. The pastry is puff on top and short crust on the bottom and that would be why these pies are scrumptious. They are made fresh on the premises and this shop is open till 3am on weekends. So whilst you are staggering out of a King Street pub you can stumble on over to Janet's for a pie.

Simply delicious.

This place is not a great place to sit and eat, but there is seating if you are so inclined. The food is GREAT and very cheap. I finished my pie and got another for later. It's not a fancy place, but the food is very good. I think I got a vegan broccoli curry pie, which tasted kind of cheesy. The crust was flaky and amazing, and the filling was also terrific.

This cafe deserve full star recommendation. I'm giving this…read morecafe 5 stars because: 1. The are famous for their cheese cake, and the pastry that I've tried today... it was out of this world. My Apple turn over was nicely glazed, sweet and slightly tanginess from the apple, which I assumed Granny Smith apple, cooked to perfections, still have a bite to it and ration between pastry and feeling, just right. 2. They served a good coffee, everything is just perfect, form the caffeine dosage through the perfect milk temperature. 3. Quick service, friendly and come with smile. Efficient service even though cafe was busy at 11.30pm, well done! Keep up good work guys!

I request to change another but all the staff (4 staff include the chef) insisted that it is the one and refused to do anything. Even the chef said it's normal to look like that!! Also the staff just took it in n out to show to their colleagues, finally they damaged all the edge of my cake and just repack it and pass to me. Also they just deleted my comment form Facebook. What a service ! They "USED TO BE" nice patisserie that I purchased for almost every celebration in the past. Don't buy Unless you expect the cake won't look the same as you order. Otherwise, never in the future.

Located on 'Bourke Street'.... duh.... (actually there's also one on Gardeners Road as well, hence this review but they are basically the same! I go to both and I love'em both!!); it's an awesome Sat day brunch place with a few mates or actually nice enough to bring your better half for nice cup of coffee. Personally on a good Sunny Day, I wouldn't mind being there with a book while munching on a sausage roll. Yes Sausage rolls... You have to try them... they are not your Coles $5 for 30 rolls but gourmet lamb/beef/pork rolls which are superb. Their pies... oh mh.. their pies are sooo good! Always great variety, that you just gotta try them. Their dessert pastries are just divine as well! Ginger Brulee cannot be resisted! A must try - Carrot Cake! Believe me; you will love it! Great pastries; awesome coffee; love their smoothies/ice drinks; and excellent atmosphere. Imagine this. If can give a 5 star review to this place; purely based on Sausage rolls, carrot cakes; you know, simple stuff... how good it must have been! drools¬! Only down side - You really smell like pastry afterwards if you eat in.

This French/Lebanese…read morebakery and cafe is famous among locals for its breads, cakes, Aussie pies, quiches, sausage rolls and other pastries. I tried their famous Bakerman Bacon and Egg Roll and sure enough, it lived up to the hype-a gorgeous dollop of mayo and crunchy bacon snuggled in a crusty bun. But. What's up with the $8.50 price tag? At the end of the day it's just bread, bacon and eggs. I washed this down with a coffee (the Molinari brand) and it was ok if a little bland. One time I stopped for lunch and chose the spinach and ricotta quiche with a side salad ($9.50). It was exactly what I was after (I love cheese!) but it was on the small side-the salad almost took over the plate but it certainly wasn't the star. There was not enough dressing; the leaves were a little dry. There IS something about this place that keeps me coming back though. It has a really tranquil atmosphere and is a great alternative for breakfast or lunch if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of nearby King St in Newtown. There are also gluten-free menu options and free Wi-Fi. The cosy village square is great for kids to run around after school while you sip your latte and people watch. Just don't let the kids see the $6.50 fruit smoothies. Great ambience and service but costly food you could get pretty much anywhere.
