There was even a personal door-opening service when I visited. I'm not sure if the door is opened for every customer. I'd like to think they were just being chivalrous towards me personally, but in fact I think they were probably just wondering what the heck I was doing loitering outside their shop, taking photos of the front. That said, I was personally escorted out the door on the way out also, so they can't have been that suspicious. This seems extremely well stocked, if not a little bafflingly so: in a sort of 'Is it a newsagent? Is it a cafe? Is it a stationers? Is it a home store?' way. But then again, better to have too much stuff than too little, I suppose. The sandwich ingredients didn't look amazing, I have to say. But I appreciated the slightly random doorman service.

It is fairly roomy inside and I popped in just to grab a few bits and bobs for my evening; so mainly snacks and girly magazines! The staff in there were really friendly and very polite, which always makes a nice change these days. I found what I wanted fairly quickly and ended up buying lots of junk food and about three magazines. They put it all in a bag for me and asked me what I had planned for the evening (although I think they could guess I had no exciting plans). Overall, I think that this is a really good store, it stocks more than expected and the staff are very pleasant.

It is a really useful shop to have it will provide you with pretty much everything you need i.e sweets, papers etc. The prices are really cheap and the customer interaction is good staff are really friendly. It is clean, neatly stocked and has a good choice of newspapers - from the Express and Star to the Independent. The sweet counter is also pretty decent, with all of the e-number laden and neon coloured confectionery you could wish for. Towards the back of the shop, they sell all of the basic foodstuffs and household products you'd expect, including bread, canned foods and washing up liquid. I was quite impressed with this shop, mainly because the lady who served me was really friendly and jolly. That said, they didn't stock my favourite chewing gum (Wrigley's Extra Ice White, for what it is worth). They did sell chilled Diet Coke in a can, which is the best drink in the whole wide world. Life truly is swings and roundabouts.

Despite the name there is more here than a news agents, it has household and convince items littered throughout so its nice not to have to pop into cradley super Tesco and loose even more of your soul. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than going to badly stocked shop that struggles to even have the basic of chocolate bars or pints of milk! If you literally need a sugar hit, magazine or a drink then the selection on offer should tickle your fancy. The woman who works there barely cracks a smile but when you're just buying a kitkat.. who cares. Overall, handy little shop that's bound to have something you want for sale. Prices are pretty average, if you're looking for cheap deals you'd be better going to a supermarket.

In my humble opinion, one of the most consistently reliable and excellent local services that the…read morecity of Birmingham has to offer is its newsagents, and an excellent example of this is S & Z News on Oak Tree Lane in Selly Oak. Their range of products is exactly what you'd expect from a small newsagents, not selling an awful lot more than magazines (of which they have what I've found to be an exceptionally good selection), newspapers, sweets, drinks, and a few basic essentials, such as tea bags. All their prices are extremely fair, more than competing with the nearby Sainsburys, and, despite having been in numerous times and been served by several different people, the staff are always friendly. If you're looking for any of the above in the area, then I'd heartily recommend S & Z News.

They had a small selection of books, snacks and beverages, the prices are pretty high here, similar pricing to what you'd pay at Birmingham Airport but with a smaller selection. They do have a manned counter but this never seems to be in use, in favour of self-service machines, again this is one of the things which confuses me most about WHSmith as self-service machines isn't too good for the non-tech savvy elderly. 3* - Pretty good location for the NEC, Railway Station and Airport, but do plan ahead if you can to avoid this one.

I may be going out on a limb here, but in my opinion, in terms of service at least, the corner shops of Birmingham are the best in the country, and a part of its unique culture. News Express is emblematic of the Birmingham convenience store, with friendly staff, good choice, and, in classic Brum style, as much stuff crammed into a small space as possible. The prices aren't the cheapest, but in the centre of town you're not going to do an awful lot better anywhere else, and they do have regular deals on chocolate bars, which is never a bad thing.
