Most days of the week, a visit to Newport Centre would reveal few clues that it's anything other than a council leisure centre, containing a swimming pool, sports hall and associated facilities. But keeping fit and healthy isn't its only purpose, for one or two nights a month at least, when it becomes a nicely-sized 2000-capacity music venue. The gigs may be fairly sporadic, but the quantity is generally compensated by the quality, having welcomed a lengthy list of top rock, indie and pop bands over the years, including many of Wales's finest and most famous contemporary names (Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Feeder, Goldie Lookin Chain). It also doubles as a base for functions, exhibitions, parties and business events. Like nearby theatre The Riverfront, parking isn't always entirely straightforward, but the close proximity of both Newport's central train and rail stations makes either public transport option a fairly painless alternative. read more
