This centre obviously has a swimming pool and a cycle track - as its name suggests - but it also houses a 56-station fitness suite, a dance studio, a full-sized football pitch, a tarmac outdoor 5-a-side pitch, a trail of outdoor exercise equipment, and a lecture room!
I've only actually ever used the pool there- which is 25 metres long with six lanes, and is very well-used. The emphasis is very much on swimming for exercise, rather than splashing around for fun, and with the lanes in place you're expected to swim and not just hang about! There are mother and baby sessions and various swimming lesson programmes if you want to improve.
The Maindy Centre also has a great appeal for cyclists, however, because there's nowhere else like it in Cardiff. Each circuit of the Velodrome - an outdoor, floodlit cycle track circuit - covers 460 metres. This track is also well-used, particularly for focused training and for races. It has 25 degree bankings, which isn't as steep as most Velodromes, so it is good for those new to the sport. read more
