When you enter this cozy shop, you will find yourself surrounded by chocolate. Many people would consider this place their happy place. I will have to agree. Even though it's called Newfoundland Chocolate Company, they drew me in with the large lettering on the storefront window saying "Gelato". The weather was perfect that day for gelato. My goal was to have a gelato even though I was surrounded by chocolate. They had many flavours to choose from like milk chocolate, dark chocolate, caramel apple, vanilla bean, matcha.....I ordered the vanilla bean, and it brought me back to Italy. It was that good. Smooth not too sweet. You have a choice of ordering their standard size, which comes in a descent size cup for $5. Or, you can do a take home container for $12. Overall, the experience was really good. The staff is so nice, friendly and attentive. I'll definitely check out their chocolate next time. Their milk chocolate salted caramel bar is calling my name. read more

Newfoundland Chocolate Company is a local St. John's enterprise with a few different locations around town. This location has nice chocolate bars, truffles ice cream and other chocolate treats. The truffles have each been named after local streets in St. John's, which I found really great. The chocolate is delicious and completely first class. Service was good, yet could have been better. On the day of my visit, the floor looked like it hadn't seen a vacuum in at least a few days. Not major, but did detract from the luxurious experience of the chocolates. read more

I spent some time getting to know the owners of the Newfoundland Chocolate Company, and I absolutely love everything they do. I'm chocolate-obsessed, and after touring their facilities and learning more about how they do things, I'm also now officially a chocolate snob. Everything is made in-house, and visitors can watch the chocolate being molded from a window in the storefront. Their gourmet chocolate comes in a HUGE range of flavours and styles: white, berries, dark, milk, etc. They even combine some pretty unusual tastes with some surprisingly awesome results: chili chocolate, anyone? Plus everything they do has an underlying Newfoundland theme...they even invented a chocolate titled "The Danny" when Premier Danny Williams resigned. Their boxed series comes with names drawn from locations around the province, like Bonavista, Bay of Islands, and The Cabot. (Aren't you glad they didn't use Dildo?) They also sell chocolate bars and other treats. Seriously, I could rave about this place forever. Chocolate is as much of my diet as water, and I'll never get tired of the selection at the Newfoundland Chocolate Company. They've even started teaching classes...sign me up! read more

Some of the best chocolate you'll find anywhere! My wife, who could easily be in Choclaholics Anonymous (if there is such a thing), will attest to the fact. The shop itself is beautifully done with inviting displays and a view of the kitchen where the chocolates are made. We came in on a cold day and were offered hot chocolates that could be customized to suit our preferences for dark or milk. This shop is one of the great pleasures of visiting St. John's. read more

What a cute little shop! The chocolates are amazing and I loved the selection. Got some chocolate boxes for my wife and mother in law (the latter of which was watching my kids while I was away on business). They were running a buy 3 (4?) chocolates get one free of their truffles. My colleague gave me some of his spoils and I was able to taste the chocolates first hand. They are indeed delicious. Also, was amazed at the chocolate shoes they had. A bit pricey for what I was looking for (and I was afraid of them breaking during flight!) but definitely a neat addition. read more

Not bad chocolate really compared to most mainstream on the market, but if you think this is the best chocolate out there, then you just haven't tried or travelled a lot. No comparison to Purdy's in Vancouver, or Bernard Callebaut Chocolates, who use real cream and butter (which is why you have to consume within two weeks) and is what makes their chocolate magnifique! I don't see any mention on NFL Choco's website about real ingredients and no hydrogenated oils, if you've ever had the above mentioned Chocó tiers, you would know exactly what I mean. read more

Great employees and service, good chocolate (worth the price) ... beyond awful management. I've known a few people who have worked here and they do NOT care about their employees whatsoever. I think what makes a company good is how they take care of their employees. In their case, the work of the employees does NOT reflect the good nature of management. I received a box of their chocolates as a gift. Did not like them. Extremely sweet, gritty texture, like the sugar hadn't fully dissolved, none of the stated flavours came through. All I could taste was the overpowering sugar. The chocolate itself was low quality. It was dry, crumbly, and did not have the balanced taste or texture of a good quality chocolate. read more

I love chocolate and I usually try to buy local chocolates if possible. I just wish the Newfoundland Chocolate Company produced the kind of chocolate that keeps you coming back for more. I have tried a wide variety of chocolates at this store, including a gift box (Smiling Land series). The filings were quite hard in the berry chocolates in the gift box, and they all tasted pretty much the same (although they were supposed to be different berry flavours). I would have thought that the chocolates in the gift box were just old, except that I have tried the same ones from the store (from behind the fresh counter) and they are just as hard and bland. The only reasonably good chocolates that I tried at this store were the Danny chocolates, but unfortunately half the time when I go into the store they are sold out. On a trip to PEI recently I tasted the locally made chocolates there (Anne of Green Gables) and they were far softer and more flavourful, with actual cream and toffee fillings. I think the chocolatiers at the NCC could learn a thing or two from them. read more

Service was awful. Was in the store for over 15 minuites and was not greeted, and when i asked about the origin of the chocolate the employee was very uninformed. The quality of product is very hit or miss. Some tasted okay, but the gelato is very bland and improperly frozen. The truffles are stale and bland, they all taste the same. The bars which are suplosidly made in store taste like a darymilk bar. Honestly you can get better product at a dominion for a quarter of the price. read more
