Newark Castle is in the heart of Newark on Trent. It is historic for several reasons, mostly because it is the castle where King John died in 1216 and for the important siege and battle during the (English) Civil War, when it was ruined. It remains as a ruin, but it has a striking presence along the river plus nice grounds. It is also free and simply open to the public, making it a nice stop. There is also information o the Civil War here, with signs as part of the Civil War Trail. It is not an extensive ruin but is well worth a short visit. read more
