Pickford's House Museum is free of charge. It's not a huge place, so you won't be spending more than 45-50 minutes there. The exhibit consists of furniture and everyday objects from the 18th and 19th centuries, "peopled" with display dummies in period costumes. You cannot walk into the actual rooms on the ground floor, they're shielded with glass panes. On the upper floor there are small displays of chinaware as well as small figurines. There is nothing spectacular about this place, but the Pickford House Museum does offer an intriguing glimpse into another time. And when you're going to the Derby Art Gallery anyway, you might as well walk further and pay this place a visit. It's free after all.

Its main claim to fame is the outstanding collection of paintings by the important 18th century artist Joseph Wright, but you will also find mummies, and regional archaeological and natural history exhibits at this place - the latter will of course attract mostly school children. The second floor is reserved for temporary exhibitions, and when I visited there was a rather attractive one on the 20th century painter Marion Adnams. The entry is free, and photography is allowed. The attached café is only so-so, and the presentation a bit old-fashioned (and the building itself butt-ugly on the outside!). Again, mostly of note for its Joseph Wright collection.

The museum is also home to many of Joseph Wrights paintings. Joseph Wright was born in the city and was a celebrated 18th century artist. The gallery has the largest collection of the artist's work anywhere in the world. This museum is highly recommended.

There are some great objects - the mosaics and wall paintings are unmissable, some of the best in the country. It is free to get in (so good in the school holidays!) and they hold regular special events. There is a free brochure you can pick up that lets you know when the events are so that's quite handy. They also hold an enquiry service so if you dig up any archaeology in your back garden you can take it in and get it identified!! The staff are always polite and friendly and will go out of their way to answer any questions you have. It looks like it could do with a bit of a refurbishment, but I guess they need the council to give them some money - but the displays are really good despite this. Toilets and museum are always clean and there is good disabled access (once you've gone all the way round the site and got in through the car park!)

They invited me to have a look around and directed me to the Guild Hall Museum that I originally set out to see. Like, many museums in the UK, Jewry Wall is open to the public and free of charge. The day I visited there was some sort of sword fighting demonstration taking place outside. I don't think I managed to see all the museum has to offer as I think I missed most of the ruins outside the main building. This museum focuses on the local history of Leicester. It doesn't take much time to go around and see everything - would recommend stopping by.

It is home to a natural history museum caught in time, i.e. given today's plethora of information and entertainment in the form of TV/cinema documentaries, not really exciting or essential any more. Still, the architectural minutiae, the lovely surrounding deer park and the occasional special events - such as the vintage cars and bikes display when I was there - merit a visit. The architecture of Wollaton Hall is terrific, but the museum inside is quite a bit dated and truly feels like an old style museum trapped in time. Good thing then, that when I visited in early October, there was a congregation of collectors of classic cars and bikes, which added tremendously to the overall excitement. The deer park is as vast as it is attractive. All of these are/were free of charge, and there are several cafés strewn across the grounds. There is also an industrial history museum. Since Nottingham is rather short on attractions (there's Nottingham Castle, and not much beyond that!), Wollaton Hall is the runner-up!

The history of the abbey is rich and layered from its origins as an Augustinian priory to its later life as the ancestral home of Lord Byron. Once home to George Gordon "Lord" B. and all his excesses and eccentricities, this bohemian pile in its glorious grounds is a wonderful place to visit. Look around the house, wander around the beautifully landscaped gardens, eat, get married, or just play a ball game in the grounds. [The horses are no longer allowed inside though! ;) ]

There is a little lane of shops from the 1920's including a chemist, doctors and grocery shop. Also a gallery which shows the history from the local area, not being from Nottingham originally I found this really interesting and insightful. Entry is free to Nottingham residents or £3.50 for an adult if you're not and tickets are valid for a week. Literally a walk down memory lane and a good way to kill a few hours for free. (I think there are also some air raid shelters used in the second world war)
