And boy did it deliver a flavor-filled punch to my palate! As with most pizza shops, some additional seasonings were on the counter for you to help yourself. And I did! Plenty of oregano and crushed red pepper. Yummy! The only difference I could see/taste versus pizza in the states is it's much thicker in Amsterdam - in the best way. It was not deep dish (yuck); there was both a crispyness and softness to it that meshed perfectly with the fresh cheese & other seasonings. Chef's kiss!! It was also cool watching the chef prepare the dough, etc. while you wait in anticipation of what will hopefully be the best slice of your life! I'm happy to report back that they know how to make pizza in Amsterdam. Well at least this place does! I went at least 3 times during my exploring of the area. And I'd go again whenever my journey leads me back to the area. 5 stars well deserved! The service was friendly as well.

That said, who are you people that are saying this comes close to authentic NYC 'za? Even just calling it "pizza" of any kind is a bit of a stretch. I mean, yeah, it's shaped like pizza and it's some kind of baked dough with cheese and stuff on it that you eat with your hands. The pizza "experience" is certainly there. But although this might successfully deceive the eyes, it certainly doesn't fool the tongue. Perhaps I overestimated this joint's diminished standards of the drunk 'n' stoned demographic of late-night De Wallen?

It was easy to make a reservation online (note they have two location so check which one you are booking for!), it was packed when we arrived. Service was quick and pleasant. Pizzas were delicious! We got the San Daniele and the Carnevale salsiccia (this one is in the shape of a star with a cheese filled crust at the "points"). Both pizzas were delicious, fresh-made and just the right amount for one person for one meal. The crust is closer to thin-crust than thick, but thicker than the typical American thin crust, but the dough was super well made! We also ordered the limoncello which was tasty and refreshing, and they have a few wine options as well, plus a handful of desserts.

We got the pomodoro pasta, which was a decent portion for the price. The pasta itself wasn't super flavorful though. I'm not sure if that's just how it is supposed to be, but I found myself having to add in a good amount of salt, pepper, and parmesan for it to be palatable. Once that was added though, I could also taste the good touches of garlic and fresh tomatoes. It needed a little dressing up, but that did the trick. If you need a quick pasta fix this would probably do it but don't expect too much.

Pizzeria Il Palio is located on Leidsekruisstraat, a short walk away from Leidseplein in Amsterdam…read more I decided to visit here for dinner, on the first day of my December 2023 trip to the Dutch capital. The restaurant is a decent size, there is a small number of tables as you enter the restaurant, or you can go down a small number of steps where there are more tables. The pricing was reasonable for food items, but I did find the €4.5 surcharge for a gluten-free pizza base to be a little excessive, I understand that gluten-free does cost the restaurant more, but it seems a little over the top to charge this much more. I decided to go for the gluten-free pollo pizza which contained chicken and mushrooms, the chicken was very good quality, the amount of the toppings (chicken, mushrooms, sauce etc) was generous and could almost be restaurant quality on its own, but the base was far too thick, it wasn't crispy, it was edible sure but wasn't too enjoyable. Drinks also seemed fairly expensive, especially non-alcoholic drinks, the cheapest drink in terms of € per ml was a draught beer - it was amusing to me how beer ended up being cheaper than water! The staff seemed friendly enough and the phone charging boxes were a nice touch as they don't have plug sockets by the tables. The other members of my party ordered a lasagna and were very pleased with their meals so perhaps their regular food seems much better than their gluten-free options, which need some work but there's a lot of potential for sure. 3* - I probably wouldn't return but that doesn't mean my experience was bad, there were some positives about the experience as mentioned.

Boy were we NOT disappointed. The little cozy eatery might be small but is Italian food heaven. We started with wine of course, and then we had the cheese bread, which came out like a cheese pizza. Ooey gooey melted cheese sat atop a tender focaccia-style crust, it was scrumptious. Mr. Bee enjoyed the Filet of Beef in a blue cheese, and gorgonzola sauce with tender green beans, zucchini, and potatoes. I am always drawn to anything with truffles or mushrooms and chose the truffle ravioli. If it wouldn't have been rude, I would have licked the bowl clean. The ravioli was perfectly cooked, and filled with truffle. If dinner wasn't enough, I spotted the Limoncello and strawberry tiramisu on the menu, yes, please. It was an incredible meal, with excellent and caring service. So much so, once our friends arrived in town, we took them and went back and they loved it as much as we did. It truly is a meal we won't soon forget, if ever.
