I strongly DO NOT RECOMMEND this "school", at least for adult beginner classes.
1) The operation lacks basic professionalism and competency. Basic information to sign up is not online - pricing, calendar. I called and didn't hear back for quite a while. The place is horrible to try to find. The address won't do it. They're actually in the church. A professional place would have that online and/or signs directing you. Also, they told me they'd have class a certain day; when i showed up, I couldn't even find the place. So I called and they said that of course they were closed that day, as if I should've known. The opposite of what he'd said before, said in a condescending way.
2) The Adult Beginner classes ARE NOT BEGINNER classes. These are advanced classes for very experienced dancers, and a beginner is just treated as an impediment to their clique. For instance, pirouettes are NOT a beginner move; they come after years of building muscles. The teachers do NOT teach a beginning class - where a teacher will walk you through each step, show you the correct form, have you repeat, build muscles and muscle memory, then build complexity on that. That's how skill is developed. Instead, they quickly do an advanced complex sequence, don't even tell you the pacing until it starts, go really fast, and expect you to just figure it out. Much of it was impossible for me to do as a beginning student, though I tried. And this "approach" creates a very bad foundation for building the body. Oh, but they critique little of details of form that they never taught - and are impossible to do the way they're teaching. This is not teachers who are taking responsibility for presenting good learning.
3) The Monday night teacher, C, puts on a nice face but was demeaning and abusive to me, told lies, and took zero responsibility. Really horrifying.
4) I saw no evidence that that she or the school wants to improve.
5) I think they should be honest. They are not offering a beginning class. This is a clique for advanced students -- where they're not teaching, but throwing stuff at you and it's your job to figure it out. You better already be very skilled before you come here. With C, you're also not seen as a valued student that they want to serve -- but someone who's supposed to obey and not talk back -- and she's willing to lie and be abusive if you speak a peep. She even said that her goal is for HER to have fun. Not teach well. Not create a good time for me. No, we're there to make sure that she's having fun.
Really, I go to ballet class for competent training to develop my skill. That seems obvious, but not what they offer. I suggest that you keep looking, to find a place that actually treats you like a valued customer. read more
