I have a mixed feeling about my experience at the New River Junction. It was a blast, but with MY friends, there isn't really a choice in the matter. You really have to pay attention to the website prior to visiting for a litany of reasons. First and foremost, you have to use their directions. If you try to use your GPS, you will not get to this destination. Second, there is a list of rules as long as my... arm for this place. Quiet hours, trash, what you can burn, tubing, etc. The funniest part of this is the quiet hours. You see, it is a gorgeous camping site that runs along the New River. BUT (HUGE BUT here) not only is there a train that runs on the other side of the river, BUT there is a train that runs about fifty yards from the camping site and crosses the entry road to the site. This means that at 3am, 4am, 5am there can be a mile long train filled with coal that must announce its presence. I think the conductor takes pleasure in this, as he will be very liberal with his warning horn usage. Also, with ample signage around the campsite to remind you, be aware that it is against the law to drink alcohol in public. This was fine around the site itself, but we had to do some shucking and jiving after taking a cooler with us down the tube float. There were police all over the tubing exit issuing citations to people with coolers of empty cans or water bottles with liquor. The majority of the staff was a real pleasure to deal with, save Dave the manager who seemed to have lost his sense of humor in the river. At roughly twenty bucks a night to camp and nine bucks to tube for the day, it was a relatively inexpensive weekend with a beautiful view and serene sound that is frequently thrown into an auditory and visual assualt with every passing train.

AMAZING TIME and I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting that wants to float on the river…read more Now, you float for about an hour and then they pick u up and take u back to the beginning where u can do it all over again. They never once complained, and the driver even thanked me for coming- after I've soaked in the river and am now wet and sitting in HIS vehicle getting a ride back. THANK YOU! We had a great time - went down river 3 times for only $10 and that included the shuttle ride

Great setup if you're interested in tubing without all the hassle that other tubing businesses…read morerequire such as safety classes or life jackets, etc. $ cash to park, but accepts credit cards/debit cards to pay for tubing. Reasonable prices to tube and they offer a tube for cooler's. They have a small store where you can buy soda's, ice cream, and snacks. You can leave your cooler at the landing spot and they have grills set up there where they'll provide the charcoal and light the grill for you. Park, pay the tubing fee, take your receipt to pick up your tube's. They'll hold your driver's license and you can hang your keys at the gate. The River is clean and clear! It can take a good hour to get down to the landing spot or you can hang out in the river and relax. There's two landing spots. The first one is before the small rapids and that's where the grills are located. The second landing is shortly after the rapids. If you get out after the rapids you'll have to walk a short distance to the first landing where you can enjoy a picnic or grill out before boarding the buses to return to home base. Staff are professional and friendly! There's two bathrooms and a shower at home base where you can cleanup or change clothes. I've been three times and I've enjoyed each time. When the River is low the water depth is up to your knee in most place's and can go up to your waist in a few places. The depth of the River after the rapids is what I'd say requires swimming in some areas. If you can't swim or aren't wearing a life jacket I wouldn't go down the rapids. Their season goes until the end of September and during September they're only open on the weekends. They open at 10:00 a.m.

fantastic staff! great boats!…read moreeveryone was kind and friendly and the boats were in great condition. prices and policies are very fair! rented three times in a week and was FANTASTIC each time. 100% will be back.

This was our second time renting from Claytor Lake Water Sports. Check in is very thorough. They…read moreprovided dockside training and gave you an overview of the lake. They do not allow ANY alcohol on the boat. That goes for the driver and all passengers. They WILL check your coolers. This time we were able to rent their "Funtoon" on the 4th of July. We had 4 adults and 3 kids. The boat featured multiple adirondack chairs, a propane grill, swim platform, and best of all a porta-potty. The porta potty made boating all day with 3 kids bearable, but let's be honest...the adults enjoyed it as well. We rented a towable for the kids. The boat only has a 90HP engine and is "blocked" at the top of the throttle so you need to temper expectations. We had an issue with a tear in our tube, but it was quickly taken care of back at the dock. The staff replaced it with a new chariot style tube. We had a great time on the lake. We came out of the dock and went left to anchor and swim. We took the time to fix hamburgers and hot dogs while stopped. We then went a tubed for a long time and ended up at Rock House Marina. They had some live music, so it was nice to get off the boat and relax for a bit. Overall a great day... Filled up with gas at the end of the day and back to the campground.
