The worst tubing experience ever! The facility was gross... nasty bathrooms and even worse shower that I wouldn't even step foot in. I have a mixed feeling about my experience at the New River Junction. It was a blast, but with MY friends, there isn't really a choice in the matter. You really have to pay attention to the website prior to visiting for a litany of reasons. First and foremost, you have to use their directions. If you try to use your GPS, you will not get to this destination. Second, there is a list of rules as long as my... arm for this place. Quiet hours, trash, what you can burn, tubing, etc. The funniest part of this is the quiet hours. You see, it is a gorgeous camping site that runs along the New River. BUT (HUGE BUT here) not only is there a train that runs on the other side of the river, BUT there is a train that runs about fifty yards from the camping site and crosses the entry road to the site. This means that at 3am, 4am, 5am there can be a mile long train filled with coal that must announce its presence. I think the conductor takes pleasure in this, as he will be very liberal with his warning horn usage. Also, with ample signage around the campsite to remind you, be aware that it is against the law to drink alcohol in public. This was fine around the site itself, but we had to do some shucking and jiving after taking a cooler with us down the tube float. There were police all over the tubing exit issuing citations to people with coolers of empty cans or water bottles with liquor. The majority of the staff was a real pleasure to deal with, save Dave the manager who seemed to have lost his sense of humor in the river. At roughly twenty bucks a night to camp and nine bucks to tube for the day, it was a relatively inexpensive weekend with a beautiful view and serene sound that is frequently thrown into an auditory and visual assualt with every passing train. read more

One of the Best Camping Trips so far!! We are weekend warriors and are always looking for something different. Our friends booked our site, we loaded the campers and kayaks up and headed out. Before I went, I READ the rules and FAQ's so before I arrived, I knew a little about the place. I also completely understood the rules and that there were trains running. As soon as I arrived, my RV cord was damaged and burnt the converter up. The owner of the campground did not hesitate into trying to get me the correct parts to repair my unit. Even when one of our younger adults tried to pull the truck into where it wasn't suppose to be, the other employee explained that they couldn't do that and then explained why. No one was rude! The rule was broke and they corrected it and also explained. The rv sights were tight but with our 30'+ rigs (including a 46' Fusion) we all fit and made new friends while we were there. I also thought it was super cool floating the river and then hearing the trains coming and then watching them go along the river! It represents what America is IMO. We left this morning but before we left, we already booked and paid for our trip next year. To the owners of the campground, you have a really nice place and I can tell you try to keep the place looking nice and taken care of!! read more

My wife and I and our youngest son stayed here in July for a baseball tournament at Virginia Tech and to also visit our son at Virginia Tech. It is in a great location for that purpose we plan on staying here for a lot of the football games this year. The views are amazing and the water is crystal clear, the smallmouth fishing is excellent. The owners were excellent as well to work with and went out of their way to make our stay a pleasant experience. The trains can be a little noisy but in all honesty it gives the campground a little character I sleep like a log and they didn't bother me at night but some other campers did complain, but for the most part this is a really neat campground and the tubing is pretty cool going down the river and over the falls I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a pretty cool getaway weekend. read more

I was visiting friends in Blacksburg and we ended up here to go tubing. I've been tuning in a lot of rivers but never had this kind of experience. From the minute we arrived the staff made us feel like we were at a country club! They filled our inflatables up, they drove our food and dry towels to the end where we would get out. They even started the grill for us so when we were done all we had to do was get out of the waterfall start barbecuing! It was incredible service and made the day perfect. I would love to camp there sometime. read more

Tubing down the New River is basically a perfect way to spend an afternoon. For about $10 a person you can plop your butt on a tube and plop your beers in a COOLER TUBE and hang out all afternoon. The water is incredibly shallow, so you can post up on a rock and drink beverages in peace (there seems to be pretty strict rules about drinking on the campground land). There is a great rock to jump off of in the middle of the rapids. I'm pretty sure the water there is deep enough to dive. The only things preventing this place from getting five stars are the pretty intense drinking rules (I imagine that this is a liability issue, so it does make sense) and the bathroom. One stall for hundreds of campers and tubers? That seems silly and not well planned out to me. But...other than that this place is totally tubular! read more

New River Junction was by far the most beautiful campground I've seen. It's nestled in the mountains, right on on the river between two train tracks, which providing a soothing rather than jarring backdrop. We camped out here on a Wednesday night, without a reservation and were given the "best site" in place... which proved to be nothing short of spectacular. It was right on the river, with water access, of which we took full advantage. Clean and clear water, a shallow depth, and swift moving current make this river perfectly relaxing. Although we didn't get a chance to tube, it was certainly the perfect location. Also the service was above and beyond any I have ever experienced. The staff brought us fire wood directly to our site and were very communicative about the goings on in the area. The only downside about this site is that they didn't have an area to shower, or at least one that we saw or were told about. read more

This is a great campground off the beaten path. The trains are loud but they let you know that on there website. With that said if there is no tubing there is nothing to do but look at the beautiful river. If you have kids and the river is closed it is not the best place to go. I bet when the river is open and tubing is happening this place is great. We called twice and never once were we told that the river has been closed all summer. I suggest you call numerous times to make sure river is opened before you arrive. The communication and lack of cooperation from staff for refund after arriving with river closed is only reason for 3 star rating. Please call a week before and find status of river with option to get refund. read more

This is not a good Campground and the management is not good. We booked three nights but my wife got sick after the first night and we had to leave early. They didn't refund any of the remaining two nights which, technically they are allowed to do. None the less, they should have refunded at least a part of our remaining two nights since we were not leaving for frivolous reasons. Also, there was hardly anyone in the campground to it's not as though we were taking up a site that could have been booked we were taking up a site that could have otherwise been booked. Aside from that, the campground really sucks for two reasons. One is that the trains run on both sides of the river all night long and you can't even sleep there. The second is that there is only one dirty bathroom for the entire Campground for each gender. In other words, only one person can use the bathroom and shower at the same time. All in all, it was the attitude of the management when I asked for a refund that was most telling. Clearly these are people who didn't give a s*** read more

Came to Blacksburg with a couple of friends and we were treated horribly. They had no respect for younger individuals and assumed we were up to no good. RVers camping there cussed us out for going 5mph and the camp director also berated us after hearing about the RVers getting mad at us. Would never recommend staying here especially for kids. read more

The cons on this campground outweigh the pros. Yes, it's a gorgeous vista, and it's great that so many of the campsites are on the water's edge. But, because it's also a tubing gig, you've got busloads of amped up kids throughout the day in addition to the campers. The sites are very close together. At site #12, we were squeezed in so close to our neighbors that we could all see and hear everything that everyone did. Thank goodness they have posted quiet hours between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. -- but even so -- you have the trains. It's aptly named as "New River Junction" because it is plopped in the middle of two very active railroad routes where the engineer must blow his horn when crossing the road. Some of the campsites are no more than a couple hundred feet from that crossing and get treated to the horn, the engine, and the screeching wheels every hour or so during the day and night. You literally have to stop talking during these crossings and continue the conversation after the noise dies down. Since it is located in a valley, anything needing a data connect (gps, cell phone, wifi, etc.) is unreliable. If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a noisy spot that's in a beautiful location -- you might want to give this a try. I should also add that the staff has always been pleasant and helpful every time we've been here. read more

I went tubing with several friends. We expected it to be a busy weekend so we made reservations in advance. They took our reservation and sent us a group form telling me our tubes would be reserved. When we got to NRJ there were no tubes and a TWO HOUR WAIT! The area is beautiful and the tubing is great when there are tubes. read more

The upper management at the New River junction were so incredibly rude to my party. We came with a group of around 10 to 15 people. Most of us rented their tubes (which are pretty low quality and a couple of them were flat), but a small number of us had our own tubes we wanted to use. Despite our group having given over 100 dollars to the NRJ, the workers insisted that those of us with our own personal tubes had to pay 5 more dollars each to simply enter the river along side our friends. After we floated, we wanted to drive the tubes back in our own cars because it is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC and being crammed into a small bus with strangers puts us at high risk of contracting (or unknowingly passing along) the airborne virus. As we got into our cars we were yelled at by the workers for not taking the shuttle and for trying to turn our car around (a process that would take less than 5 seconds) on their "private property". When we returned to the top of the river, a red haired man (who has many other negative reviews) cornered our friend and yelled at her for several minutes about how we were being rude and breaking their rules. I know there are two sides to each story but let me assure you that despite being harassed by two middle aged workers for a good chunk of the afternoon, we were perfectly pleasant and respectful. The staff, specifically the woman who drove the shuttle and the red haired man, are hostile and do not provide respectful service what so ever. I would recommend bringing your own tubes and entering the river at one of the many little beaches along the side to avoid dealing with the rude staff at NRJ. read more

We stayed here the weekend of Sept 12 so we did not do any tubing. The campground is beautiful. Not for kids. No park or anything. The river is on one side and the railroad tracks are on the other. If you can sleep through a train whistle no problem if not this isn't the place to stay! They have one shower and bathroom for the entire place. And it closes from 11am to 6pm, yes you read those hours right. Our last night at about 10pm the water and power to campsites was off and never came back on before we left in the morning. This also meant that the dump station was closed and we were not able to dump and clean our camper. We would not come back to this campground. read more

We camped there sometime back, I found the manager rude. When the train awoke us up in the middle of night, I almost ran through the wall of our camper. I didn't know if a tornado was bearing down on us, or if a jet was landing in the campground. Then the next train came by, then the next one. It appeared as if they go by, then come down the other side of the river, but I am not sure if they really do this. I had constant issues with wifi, but am not sure why. The campground is pretty but personally I could not get past the trains. Personally, I found the dump station to be horrible. read more
